“The Converted Railway Station Rocks!”
Reviewed 1 June 2012

Have stayed here a couple of times now with groups of teenagers and absolutely love it. The tiered bunk system and rustic charm of the place (not to mention the extremely genial and welcoming host, Richard!) have been much appreciated.

Keep on keepin' on!

For a stag weekend you couldnt ask for a better set-up. Amazingly helpful and friendly staff who let you get on with your own thing and enjoy the facilities. I would recommend this place to any stag party as it has everything. Top notch Abernethy Bunkhouse - great work guys!! D

Thanks for that - it is so nice when we know that people have had a good time. I see that you were in the bigger house and of course that has the bar and the hats - but, when we build our new one we shall have the same facilities! We seem to have a lot of stags and hens nowadays - I think because you get the whole place to yourself - saves hassles and grumpy fellow guests!

i organised my husbands 50th gathering here at Nethy house, as the reviews looked excellent on here. A group of 44 thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and had a fabulous time. The hostel is in such a beautiful part of scotland and easily accessed from the A9 through the Heart of the Highlands! On the friday night i had arranged for a Quiz for our party and that was so much fun,our friends Sharon and Stevie took on this role with a lot of shouting at times disagreeing over the correct answers which where in the quiz book!!!
After the quiz i had organised for Kareoke , but the quiz finished late so folk went through to the cosy snug bar, which had a lovely atmosphere for an unmanned bar, we made our own entertainment . i had taken up a wee music centre and various cds and set this up in the bar,and when you have all your friends and family around its just perfect.
Meal times ran like clockwork, and the kitchen was fab and had everything i needed to cook for everyone. the best plan with a big party is to put everyone in an orderly queue and serve up food for them, so my sisters and i did just that, especially when folk had a few drinks in them!!!so we where glamourous dinner ladies for a while on the friday night!!!
The saturday some of us went through to Aviemore which is a lovely wee town with some gid pubs, especially the Papa Rocks and The winking Owl ! A few of us had been up to this area a few times in the past and the area is fabulous for skiing and walking which is what a lot of us like in the crowd, but this weekend was a celebration weekend so just took to drinking and having a gid time that way for a change!!! we arrived back to the hostel late afternoon and decided too have the BBQ indoors as the weather wasnt to gid, so i was glad i brought my Jumbe size GEORGE FOREMAN for back-up as this cooked 100 burgers !!! 100 sausages where cooked in the oven , and i cooked the steaks on top of the stove, the steak came from the local buthcher and was just first class, everyone commented how tender it was and the best steak they had every had, so compliments to the local buthcher in the village of Nethy bridge for supplying our meat!!! when everything was cooked everything was put in the hot plate and this was great for everyone helping them selves as and when, throughout the evening.
The entertainment i had arranged for saturday night was a band called The Racketeers a cover band from scotlands central belt. They did rock covers including Kings of leon, coldplay, rolling stones, etc, every song was just ACE and folk where up dancing most of the time just having a ball.!!!so would definately recommend this band for anyone looking for this type of music for your bash here, as they know the lay out now.The band stayed at the hostel with us on the Saturday night so they didnt have to travel back that night. after they had played, most folk went through to the cosy snug bar and contiued partying!!
This is such a great venue for a gathering and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning a get together, ideal for putting on your own entertainment, there is a pub accross the road, but most of us didnt even see it as we had our own entertainment and cosy bar!probably the best in the area that weekend for a while.
I would like to say a very personel THANK-YOU to Richard and Patricia, and Richard was very helpful and approachable .(Shame we didnt get to meet you Patricia on this visit, hopefully next time.) We had invited them to our entertainment but couldnt make if, such a shame as they would have loved it for sure.Your venue is a special place and you should both be very proud of it for giving gatherings such an experience and happy memories to take away with them for years to come. we would love to come back in the future and stay again, Our kindest regards to you both . Talis, that is so kind to write such a great review. I, too, am sorry that I didn't get to meet you due to that stupid migraine! We really appreciate feedback, as you know and can take criticism but this has made my day. Yes, I agree, Mike Mustard's meat is good and often given as a reason that people moved to Nethy Bridge! Thanks for taking the time to review us.

This is the fourth time we have taken the HUB network scout event back to Nethybridge and this was the busiest. With over 50 participants from across Scotland there are a range of expectations when they all arrive on the Friday evening,But when they leave on the Sunday it's safe to say that all these expectiations have been met if not exceeded. A key to that is the warm wlecome and great facilities on offer in and around Nethyhouse. The owners are very helpful and flexible in the run up to the event when the numbers and requirements of the group are changing on a daily basis and they are always willing to pop down to the centre to help us locate the controls for the TV or chalk for the pool table ;). Their local knowledge and contact list is also an great resource, whether it's a massage you're looking for or 5 kegs of beer they can put you in touch with the right person.

The centre itself offers great facilties. The rooms are spacious and functional. The showers and toilet facitiles can cope with even the messiest of groups. The bar is agreat facility with TV, darts, pool and a disco area it ticks all the boxes and you can set the prices :) A cheap night in. The catering facilties are also ideal for big groups with ample storage in the basement and food deliveries to the door. The local shop and butchers are handy for the bits and pieces you may have forgot.

The large playing fields over the bridge are great for big events and the numerous paths and wlaks in the local are can be utilised for walking/ cycling or running (we had folk doing all of these this weekend). Parking is good and it's easy to find.

There is porbably an awful lot more I could say but I ned to get back to work.

Thanks again Richard and Patricia I know we'll be back next year.

Thank you very much for your super comments about our larger Abernethy Bunkhouse - Nethy House. It is always appreciated when people take the trouble to comment as it is all useful for later visitors.
It is an ageing property, and like its owners, feeling the occasional twang of old age - but it is still very popular with groups like yours for whom a hotel is not really an option!
We always look forward to your group and travel experience does go both ways. Thoughtful guests always make for better service.

As a picturesque and welcoming town on the edge of the Speyside whisky region, I, alongside my University's Whisky society, have been staying at the Bunkhouses anually for the last three years, as a society tradition that stretches back well beyond then.

The main bunkhouse (Nethy House) is a beautiful hostel, with photographs, certificates, letters, numerous oddities and a truly spectacular hat collection (military uniforms, postal workers etc). It is the small artefacts such as these that makes the House very inviting and warm. And then of course there are the larger comforts...

Alongside sleeping quarters that would happily accommodate a small army, Richard and his wife Patricia have decked out the kitchen with enough kit to feed the 45-strong student force, that we have taken up there in the past, with a full cooked Scottish breakfast quite easily.
The showers and other amenities are large and, while simple, suit the purpose perfectly.

And, of course, who can go amiss in a hostel that comes fitted with its own fully functioning bar, with optics, glasses and keg line (on a traditional pulling pump) which can be attached to a keg ordered from the local brewery to be delivered straight to the House.
And what would a bar be without its very own set of board games, piano, pool table and darts board?

Nethy House is THE place to stay, whether you're visiting Nethy Bridge, Speyside, or just passing through.

Nethy Station takes on a slightly different role. With more obvious Drying Rooms, and a slightly smaller operation, the Station is purpose built for Hikers, Climbers and Skiers.
It has been a while since I last stayed there (as we prefer to book the House if possible), but the facilities for eating, sleeping and socialising are all very good, with the same good quality kit filling each respective section.

While the Station lacks some of the finer entertainments that the House has, it is still a great cozy place to stay, and Richards own personal touch shines through.

Richard and Patricia, themselves are fantastic people, with a couple of quirks between them that make for excellent company. They will very happily give you your space, but will also do their best to show you round, be social, and have a good laugh.

Whatever you're doing in the area, if its Hiking, touring, or just passing through, I would very strongly reccommend stopping over with them.

Room Tip: Smaller quarters are in place, off the main dining area, to give drivers or group leaders a more pri...

Thank you very much Jeddicus. It is always nice to know that people enjoy staying at the Abernethy Bunkhouses but you have been very helpful and actually taken the time to compare them which is super!
Of course, I have to point out that the Station does have the beer pump too, just in case it is necessary to stay there instead!
We really are most grateful and unfortunately though many of our hats have been stolen - you will be pleased to hear that we are replacing them as we speak!
We shall look forward to seeing you guys again this year.

A building full of character is an understatement. The walls are covered in paintings, certificates and photographs which make the place seem very welcoming and homely. The facilities are good for a large group with a bar, kitchen with commercial gas cooker and large dining room. The smaller areas for leaders are nice escapes from what can turn into a hectic house with large groups, the showers are hot and the drying room is... dry.

Richard is very hospitable and added greatly to the stay when he popped into the house to say hello. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for him.

If you are tall, watch out for the ceiling in the drying room.
