“Food very poor, hotel worn out, not dog friendly”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013

We stayed one night, the food was extremely poor quality, especially the breakfast (worst we have ever had). Whilst dogs are accepted they are not allowed anywhere apart from the beer garden, your bedroom and the utility bar used by the locals. Some of the staff were friendly, but this hotel needs refurbishment and I do not understand why Visit Scotland allow it to keep its 3 star rating, makes a nonsense of their ratings!

This hotel basically caters for bus tours and feels a bit tired. The rooms are still from the 70s. A bit quirky with the phone in the loo and the ancient TV with 5 button handset which we found amusing. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was edible but nothing to write home about. I wouldn't rush back

Spent 2 nights, dinner bed and breakfast. Room size adequate but en-suite tight for space. Carpet and furnishings very dated. Carpet was threadbare in places. Drain smells in some corridors, kitchen smells in others. Food poor quality, eg spicy bean casserole made from baked beans with added beans and chili. Limited menu which seemed to come from the 1970s. Breakfast no toast rack with choice of brown/white as with other hotels. Waitress came round with a plate and asked if we wanted a bit of toast. Felt like it was rationed. Fried eggs rubbery and greasy. Seemed as if there wasn't a qualified chef on site. Staff seemed to be working multiple roles. Staff were very friendly and helpful but working with poor resources. Felt sorry for them. Noisy early morning due to bus trips leaving. Public bar very tatty with poor choice of beer on tap, no real ale on tap. Toilets next to bar were in need of upgrade. Beer garden broken furniture and mix of new/old tables. Paintwork flaking. Overall the hotel had a feeling of faded glory, which is a shame. The hotel group needs to invest in this property as the building could be stunning, the location is great, the staff are willing but seem to be held back due to lack of major building maintenance, training and investment. I would give the staff 8 out of 10, but hotel interior and food 5 out of 10. Wouldn't have paid more than we did for what we got and in fact got the same deal in a nearby Hilton which had higher quality and facilities.

Great welcome, friendly and fun staff. All round a great experience. Breakfast OK definitely had worse. Happy to open bar when we got back from a wedding late on so that we could have a night cap and continue the chat.

Cannot be beat for value for money. Pleasant room, pleasant efficient staff, pleasant surroundings. Breakfast is superb. I love especially the black pudding. I took the Db&b option and while a lot on the menu was a little 'exotic' for me - what are vegetables anyway ? :-). I am a bird photographer and this is an excellent base. Some people use the phrase 'old and tired' - I say 'the hotel has character'. The public lounge has large leather settees, large backed period chairs and tables etc suiting the ambience of the room. Evelyn from Cockermouth must have gone to the wrong hotel. Her review bares no resemblance what so ever to the facts

This hotel offers good value weekend dinner, bed and breakfast rates that suited our party of 20 birdwatchers very well. The hotel is located at the heart of Speyside birding sites with good locations within walking distance and beyond. The staff were helpful and arranged a large table for us in the dining room. The food was a straight forward limited menu of traditional dishes. These were well cooked and presented and enjoyed by the group. The breakfasts were excellent with plenty of choice. The rooms were variable as some have been renovated and others are still waiting. They were warm with good beds, although a little tired. All were en-suite with good bathrooms. There was tea, coffee and biscuits in all rooms. Everywhere was kept clean. I would recommend this hotel for a good value group visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room

we had a lovely three day break in a club room and we would recommend thoroughly. We had bathrobes and slippers, and wine choc and nuts every day. The food was really good and the staff and locals friendly. it was excellent value for money!

Room Tip: Room 201 or 201A are huge and look out to the front.
