Had a weeks birdwatching here in May. Birdwatching superb with very knowledgeable guides and the hotel equally so with very pleasant restaurant staff, breakfast and evening meal very high standard. Packed lunch also very good. Looking forward to another break there.

The Mountview is the home of Heatherlea birdwatching holidays which i have been on for the past six or so years. I did not stay in the hotel on this occasion as we were whisked straight up to Orkney after breakfast in one of their mini buses. But I can state from past experience that it is an excellent hotel with first class menus and most of the ingredients are sourced locally, Also it is ideally situated to explore both the Cairngorms National Park and also the coast along the Moray firth. In short a good base for exploring this part of Scotland

Room Tip: Avoid the small single room over the main entrance, the bath room is complete separate and involves...

In January we joined a group of fellow bird watchers on our second trip to this hotel. As before, we experienced great hospitality. The food was fantastic, from porridge and full Scottish breakfast to set us up for the cold day ahead to the fabulous evening meals via morning coffee with homemade shortbread, packed lunches and afternoon tea with homemade cake. All part of the birding package. The guides drove us around the area in the hotel's minibuses, finding as many of the Scottish specialities as possible. Their knowledge and expertise was incredible. At the end of a long day we were grateful for the hot powerful shower and extremely large and comfortable bed waiting for us. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and we would thoroughly recommend Heatherlea Bird Watching Holidays based at The Mountview Hotel.

We recently joined the Heatherlea team for a birding trip, the guides were excellent & strived to find all the Scottish species! The hotel is ideal for a birding group, with a large comfortable lounge and seperate dining area. The food is excellent with interesting vegetarian options. However, the second dessert option every night was fruit salad! Not forgetting the home-made shortbread & cakes for coffee breaks whilst out birding! We had room 3 which is large & started off very cold! A heater & extra blankets were supplied immediately the issue was mentioned. The guest dining room can be cold as well(single glazed, large windows & 1 radiator). The staff are very friendly and accommodating

Room Tip: Room 3 will be great in summer for the all round view!

This is very pleasant little hotel which is used by bird watching enthusiasts alot, it has the feel of a large guest house, rooms comfy, TV in our room was small 14" portable but it worked and room was warm and cosy and we could watch red squirrels o the tree outside.
Breakfast was good but the dinner was exceptionally good - what a hidden gem!

The hotel has a very special atmosphere. It's situated in a somewhat remote village "in the wild", with sheep, cows and beautiful views around it. The location is both plus and minus for some (who is travelling by public transport), because the buses to the village are not very frequent, especially on Sundays. And the village itself is tiny. But if you want to escape from it all - it's a perfect place. And everything adds up to the atmosphere - the quietness, the interior, the smell of an old house, birdwatchers staying at the hotel, a fireplace that they lit when the weather is bad, poetic views from the windows. And the staff - they are the most helpful, friendly and welcoming I've ever seen. They give advice and surround you with care. The rooms are quite big, cozy and very sweet. If you have a bathroom that is not in your room - it's rewarded by it's size and presence of a bath. It's clean and private. The breakfast is very tasty. The locals are so nice. The surrounding area is very beautiful. It's convenient to explore the Northern part of the Cairngorms from the nearby town Aviemore. Car travelers won't have any problems at all, I guess. A very pleasant and interesting stay overall.

As a birdwatching break it is certainly 5 star with friendly and knowledgable guides using two minibuses so only 6-7 in each .
As a hotel it leaves some things to be desired. Don't ever accept the 'small single' as miniscule would be far more accurate. A small bed jammed against a draughty window with the room too small to even pull the bed away from the wall. The en-suite so small the shower was just a triangle of a normal sized shower - how to get in and close the door?
I was fortunate enough to be moved to another room when I complained.

Other downsides - porridge put out in bowls whether you were there or not. The second choice of sweet each evening was fruit salad - always apple and little else. Food generally good and sometimes really good, once really poor, Just not the quality you would expect from the starred restaurant within the hotel.

I would recommend it for a birding break - think it would not be good as independent holiday.

Room Tip: avoid small ensuite and also the single with private bathroom - bathroom too far away
