“If we could change just one thing...”
Reviewed 20 April 2010

First of all, the other reviewers generally have it right. It was busy Easter weekend but after that all of the locals from elsewhere in PR and other travelers cleared out, and we practically had the pool to ourselves. We booked a 2 BR 2.5 BA partial ocean view unit for a family of 4 and had plenty of space and privacy. This location is spectacular. If I had to it over again I would have chosen the partial ocean view again. It's a short walk to the beach and the view there is exactly what you would picture in your mind's eye if someone asked you to think a beautiful Caribbean vista.

So, what would we have changed? The dining options. This is not a hotel. There is no room service and no restaurant. We knew this ahead of time but our dining experiences ranged from fair to disastrous. Fortunately, the condo did have a kitchen and we learned the hard way that we would really need to make use of it whether we wanted to or not. Next door to the Marbella Club is the Beach Club and café, the food here was just ok and the service was a bloody nightmare. On our last day in PR a quick lunch at the Beach Club lasted over two hours. Every meal was a struggle except those we cooked for ourselves in the kitchen. Carmen, the property manager for the Marbella Club, thoughtfully left a list of restaurants and phone numbers. We needed more than this, as first time visitors we had no idea where anything was and we were always getting lost. The Marbella Club is part of the massive Palmas del Mar complex and you really can get anywhere you want to go by golf cart. Unfortunately the only map we had was the local pennysaver map which was sometimes misleading and other times useless. On our way out we passed a Subway (Which would have been good to know about instead of waiting forever for our server at the Beach Club!) So in summary, our one complaint is that the MC could do a better job catering to first time visitors.

The two exceptions to our bad dining experiences were Café de la Plaza and the Chez Daniel tapas restaurant, both were excellent. Café de la Plaza was a little difficult to find but worth the effort. We paid no more than we did for any other meal and it was the best steak churasco we had while in PR, we would also recommend the calamari. The tapas place (Chez Daniel) everyone raves about is worth the trip, it lives up to its billing as well.

Our group consisted of two couples, each with a one year old child. When we booked The Marbella Club we booked a 3 bedroom condo that would accommodate the 6 of us. Four days before we were to arrive there, Carmen (the rental manager) called me to tell me there was a problem with the plumbing in the 3 bedroom unit and she would have to put us in 2-2 bedroom units next to each other. This was a little inconvenient because we had planned to be able to put the kids to bed and hang out in the living area together. But at least we were told in advance.

We rented a minivan from the airport so we were able to leave Palmas del Mar to go to the grocery store and drove around within the Palmas resort to go to different restaurants.

The two units we had were “partial ocean views” which were great. You could see the ocean, the building is just set back a little bit. Literally 44 steps to the ocean, like the website states. The rooms were very spacious and well appointed. They were cleaned daily by super nice housekeepers that speak Spanish only. So brush up on your Spanish before you come! Carmen also provided each unit with a high chair and pack n play or crib. It was really nice not having to travel with those things. The units also have full kitchens stocked with essential cooking tools and even a blender for our daily pina coladas.

The grounds were beautiful and well taken care of. The pool was great as well. There were not very many people staying in The Marbella Club (either owners or renters) and most days there were only 5 or 6 other people at the pool or on the beach with us at one time. It was like having our own private pool and beach! The staff there also provided cabanas for the beach if you request them. The beach water was perfect too. Small waves, moderately clear of seaweed, etc., no scary undertow. We were all able to swim in it.

The resort is so family friendly and feels so safe! We ate at 5 restaurants within the Palmas del Mar and while you’re going to pay resort prices the food was really good and everyone was very accommodating to our two one year olds.

I would highly recommend these accommodations to families who need the extra space. We would not hesitate returning here for another quiet, relaxing family vacation.

I was in awed at the accommodations. Once I entered in our villa, I could feel so much peace and quietness and I felt like I did not want to leave at all. The furnishings and details were outstanding and just beautiful. The beach was so close to our rooms and they also had 2 gorgeous pools. It was fun for my teenagers who would not come out of the beach, pools, golf carts, and horse back riding within Palmas del Mar. The beach club next door had fun music all weekend and activities and the food around Palmas was great. We ate at Chez Daniels and we sat in the outside terrace overlooking the harbor and it was magical and the food was delicious. We are making plans to go back as soon as possible ,,we really enjoyed staying at Marbella.

Marbella is wonderful, new & situated on a beautiful beach, pool setting is lovely as well overlooking a gorgeous vista. Beach club with restaurant and bar, plus kids pool/ slides is located 5" walk, next door. Beach Bohio another beach bar/lunch hut is a 20" walk down the beach. Water is fantastic. We have played golf every day but one, course in excellent condition. Everyone in Palmas del Mar, especially Carmen, the Marbella rental mgr here on property has been great. Palmas is an easy 45" drive from San Juan airport. We rented a car as we wanted to leave the (2200 acre!) property for groceries, to explore and for dinner as well. Drove to Bohio Beach development yesterday - 45" away- to check out their new golf course, then back to Fajardo for dinner before returning to Palmas. Will go out in the other direction tonight.
The villa is a 1 bedroom, den/ 2 bath on the corner; a "Garden View" that has mountain and property vistas. Furnishings new and really well decorated. Very nice, don't feel that ocean or partial ocean view is worth the 100$$+/day extra fee. I would recommend that you ask for 3rd floor or higher with "garden view", this way you are really looking at the beautiful mountain vistas of this development.
It is QUIET here. We think because of the economy. There are many, many condo communities here old and new, some not finished. It is not nearly 1/2 full, yet it is busy enough. We are a 20"walk, 5" drive to the Sheraton which always seems busy day and night. Also, the Marina where there are 3 restaurants, all with outdoor seating, is also busy. The Tapas restaurant at the Marina is the best we have found on property. There is one restaurant, Paradise, in Punta Santiago, a 15"drive which was very good. The hamlet is poor and restaurant basic, however food and service were excellent. It is good to get out of Palmas community. The drive to Fajardo is especially beautiful. On a rainy day you can go the El Conquistador for the spa/& or lunch. This resort would also be good for a family or group. Over 4 people I would try to negotiate lower greens fees. You can find lower rates on Marbella by going to smaller rental site.

The Marbella Club Villas are a great vacation destination. The condos are well appointed, located either right on the beach or very close to it. The beach and pools are very nice, a great place to spend the day. Golf and tennis are nearby, green fees were about $90 and it was $25 for an hour of tennis. We did not rent a car, we took a taxi to the resort ($80 for 5 people) and rented a golf cart for our stay. Really, unless you want to get out and see the Rain Forest or do some Bio Bay kayaking, a golf cart is the way to go. About $40 a day for the cart and you can get everywhere you need to go on it. There are about 10 restaurants close by and they offer everything from chinese to local fare. The Villas are located in Palmas del Mar, a large development about 45 min from San Juan. Lastly, the service was spectacular. Carmen in the front office will take care of any special requests you might have. I can't wait to go back.

We stayed in the summer for a week at The Marbella Club it was Paradise. From the moment we arrived (45 mins. drive) the guards at the property were more than helpful, check in was quick, the villa beautifully decorated, maid service every day was handy, and all this in a beautiful ocean front community. The concierge service was great, we planned our entire stay with her, from restaurant reservations all the way thru field trips, and snorkeling, biobay, horseback. Wow we really had a great time.
