Our criterion for selecting lodgings is as follows: Cleanliness, Privacy, Well appointed Kitchen, Location (close to sights), and Internet Access. Hydrangea Cottage met or exceeded our expectations in each category. We spent two nights with Shona and found her to be a helpful and delightful hostess. We highly recommend Lawn Cottages as your lodging in the Hawkes Bay Area.

We stayed at Lawn cottages with extended family, booking all 3 cottages on the occasion of my daughters wedding. Shona is an absolutely caring, thoughtful and considerate hostess. We were welcomed with fresh fruit, eggs, milk, bread and the best marmalade ever. Shona's attention to detail and her intuitive assistance during our stay is something I have never experienced anywhere else. Thank you Shona for an absolutely wonderful week at Lawn cottages. Decor is subtle with clean lines. Furnishings very comfortable. Well worth a long stay! Easy to visit surrounding areas. Very comfortable.

I've now stayed at Lawn Cottages twice; each visit has been perfect. I've just returned from a two night visit, taking my 89-year-old mother. We stayed in Flax cottage: two bedrooms (one with a large double, the other with twin beds), one bathroom, kitchen, and lounge. Shona Walding is a charming and thoughtful hostess, and her three cottages are equipped to an amazingly high standard: for example, two sizes of coffee plunger, a milk frother & an enormous supply of freshly-ground coffee...plus the milk, a loaf of freshly baked bread, a large jar of biscuits ('cookies' to an American!), fresh eggs and her mother's absolutely delicious marmalade. The kitchen was better equipped than some people's houses, so it was really a shame that we ate most of our meals out - including delicious fish 'n chips from the local shop.

The decor is enchanting - tasteful (no ghastly art!), stylish, and very calm. The cottages overlook a pond (yes, we fed the ducks), with a very attractive garden.

Shona lent us some DVDs, and the TV/DVD system was blissfully easy to use, plus a base station for I-Pods. She was charming, patient, and totally tuned into visitors' requirements.

I will be returning!

We wanted to stay near Napier and chose Lawn Cottages as we like a bit of extra room. The cottages were about half way between Napier and Havelock North.Beautifully appointed. We stayed in the cottage called Hydrangea and there were bunches of these flowers in the unit setting the scene for a beautiful few days. Wonderful sound system to relax by, a generous bowl of fruit and bread, marmalade and eggs left for our breakfast to have at our leisure. We enjoyed sitting on the verandah looking at the leafy garden as if there were no other people around for miles. If you wanted night life and restaurants around the corner this is not for you but if you want a beautiful place to relax totally undisturbed, you will not find it many other places. Siobhan was an unobtrusive manager, but helpful when we needed anything

Lawn Cottages and owner Shona Walding have earned 5 star Qualmark rating ! Fresh roses by the bed, fresh fruit and bread on the counter, eggs and Mom's Marmalade in the fridge, music playing softly, and an early arrival time taken in stride made excellent first impressions which just kept getting better. Shona has completely re-done the cottages, every detail showing the care she has taken to make it perfect. The surrounding acreage of trees and garden add to the feeling of privacy and seclusion in an already beautiful rural setting. Birds singing and a morning visit from resident-dog Truffle along with freshly-picked grapes and advice on places to go and wines to try were added bonuses. We shared a cottage with friends and all of us agreed we could happily have stayed much longer. We came as guests and left feeling like friends, all thanks to the care and attention of Shona. For under $100 Canadian we were treated to first class service and accommodation in a beautifully landscaped location just a few minutes drive from Napier, Havelock North, and numerous wineries in the Hawkes Bay area.

What a place. I found it on the web quite by chance as I searched for cottages in the Napier area. When we arrived Shona greeted us and showed us where our cottage was. We had a 2 bedroom one and it was just beautiful. Completley refurbished recently. It has quality furnishings and all modern conveniences. During our 4 week stay in NZ we travelled extensively and stayed at many places including one 5 star hotel. Shona's cottages were the only ones with a modern LCD large screen TV with loads of channels compared to the 8 or in virtually every other place.

Fresh bread and her mother's home made conserves were another delight. The cottages are just a mile or two out in the country set in a beautiful gardens with a very large pond complete with koi and very friendly ducks. The cottages have decking areas with seats and barbecues. Outside lighting makes sitting out in the evenng with a book and a drink possible.

Shona, recognising we were English, recommended a fish and chip shop to us and it was so good we got a takeaway on our first and last night from it. She has plenty of other recommendations as well for dining out.

I think I can best sum it up by saying that we stayed in a variety of cottages, motels and one 5 star hotel and Lawn Cottages was by far the best. We told Shona we will be back to stay with her again in the not too distant future and we definitely will and for longer than the 3 nights we had this time.

If you are going to this part of NZ then don't miss the opportunity to stay here.

We stayed for two nights in a 2 bedroom cottage and had a great time. The cottages are surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens and the location is very peaceful. The cottages are well furnished and the operator provides some nice little touches, with fresh food and drinks. The cottages are within close proximity to some great wineries and beautiful beaches. The village of Clive is also close to larger towns such as Napier and Havelock North for restaurant dining.
