In January 2012, during our round trip of north Island, we stayed 2 nights at Anderson's Alpine Lodge. The lodge is located 10 km from Stratford (the nearest town) and at the entrance of the Egmont National Park. You are in the middle of nowhere. Like every remote places, the lodge is very peaceful but if you need something to buy you have to go to Stratford by car. The lodge is a big wood Chalet built in an estate made of meadows and lush forest. Sheeps wander in the property. There is an outdoor spapool (with a view on the Taranaki volcano) where you can relax after a day of walk . The manager live on the ground floor. On the 1st floor are 2 double beds rooms with private toilet and bathroom and a living room with a huge picture window with a marvellous view on the volcano (if the weather allows you). The only TV is in the living room so that if you want to watch something special you have to get the agreement of the others and if you decide to go to bed you may be disturbed by TV noise. Under the roof (2nd floor), there is a third room wich is the most expensive. One of the advantage or disadvantage of the lodge (it depends on people you meet and live with) is that everyone share the same living room. So at night, if you want to go to bed while other hosts are talking each other, you can not sleep until everyone goes to bed. But if there is a good feeling between the guests, the place may be a good experience. The manager and her girlfriend where friendly but according to them, there is a big manager's turn over. So they may not be in charge any more. The other disadvantage of the lodge is that you can neither cook in your room nor watch TV at night. You have to go to Stratford to eat or buy something. Moreover, a morning, the australian guests we lived with said they had been disturbed all night long because of animal noises on the roof. But as we stayed in the 2 bedrooms of the first floor we were not disturb by these noises. As conclusion, Anderson's Alpine Lodge is a place with character which worth it because people interested in this type of accomodation are usually respectful and know how to live among other people. But to avoid bad experience it's better to be a group of 6 people to share the cost of the whole Chalet.
