Stayed here after a long day's drive from Rotorua. Can't complain at the price. Just $20 for a powered site. Facilities are at best basic and definitely maintained by a man (!) but the site has tidy grounds and peace and quiet. We camped alone apart from the chickens that visited. Alas the Hotel was closed in the evening so we never got to sample their fare or dry out from the pouring rain. No mobile coverage here so no excuse not to unwind.

We stayed at Whangamomona for 2 nights, and wow what a tranquil place to stay. It really is in the middle of nowhere.
If you want a place to just get away from it all, this is the place to go. There are a few things to do, and spending time at the Whangamomona Pub is just one of them.
It was good for ma as there is no cell coverage which really made it a break from the everyday norm.
Would definitely go back.

We loved Whangamomona ... it's completely in the middle of nowhere, on the fantastic "Forgotten World Highway" (about 60 km from Stratford). The campsite itself is owned by this small village which has created it in their old school ground and rents power sites, camping spaces and (we think) small cabins. It's totally basic but clean and eveything you really need, and at $20 for two in a powered site was around half the price of anywhere else we stayed.

The manager lives in the campsite office and chickens run around the ground. We also met the "President of the Republic" who said the profit from the camping site enables them to retain a school for the children in the town.

Loved this place and the whole Republic of Whangamomona stuff. The site is set in the grounds of the old school and is small, compact and clean. It is also very cheap. The facilities are pretty basic but the views are great and it's fun to wander around the little town/rugby pitch etc. One of my favourite campervan sites of the whole trip!
