Informative evening if not freezing cold. Recommend to accept the jackets the company offer. Could not have survived without it. Fabulous night sky. Actually got to see Saturn and it's rings through the telescope. Brilliant

It's hard for me to write a review because in all fairness we were warned that due to the clouds, we might not see much and subsequently we didn't! I also feel that if the timing and the weather is right this probably has the potential to be an amazing experience so I don't want to complain about it. Just some points, take warnings about a lack of clarity seriously (we were only there one night so could not return but now I wished I'd just taken the full refund and tried star gazing somewhere else along the line) take the wonderful arctic jackets when they are offered BUT do them up in the light of the office before you get on the bus - we spent ages fumbling around in the dark at the top trying to get ourselves and our children in the jackets, and for some reason on the 'family tour' there was only three children in total and the rest were adults so it was not aimed at children at all really - although the guides made sure the children got time/boosts to see through the telescopes at the moon and Saturn (the only things we could briefly see). Potentially wonderful but far, far too expensive for a modified tour.

Pick up from the office and drive to Mt. John to see the stars. Lake Tekapo is the low pollution area to see all the stars and milky way. If u are luck, u can see auroras sometimes!! With the biggest telescope and English/Japanese/Chinese tour guides to explain the constellations. Serve with hot chocolate to keep body warm in Winter!!

I had great expectations for my 10pm visit to Mt John. The sky was completely clear, albeit there was a full moon, so we should be in for some good sights. At $135, I was expecting a good show.

They should be more direct when handing out the winter jackets in the shop before you head up as it really should not be optional. The temperature up on the hill was literally freezing. Definitely take the jacket they offer you. If you think you'll be warm enough in Winter, think again.

I imagined being in the domes, looking at night sky vistas and having the cosmos explained, the reality was somewhat more down to earth, as it were. There were a few free standing telescopes set up, of which we looked through approximately three. We only had the opportunity to look inside one of the dome telescopes, which at least gave us a great view of Saturn and its rings.

I came away very disappointed in seeing probably three decent views, excluding the very bright moon (which was impressive although a tad too bright to look at for too long). There was a lot of waiting around, slowly turning blue. A decent telescope down in Tekapo would have provided 85% of what we saw.

They are definitely taking advantage of the Gold status. I would not recommend the experience for the fee asked.
