There is a lot to see in Lake Tekapo. As with the rest of the South Island, the Lake Tekapo area is very scenic. The Church of the Good Shepherd is a must see. I highly recommend a visit to the observatory. We went in the day time, and the views are tremendous. It would be wonderful to do one of the night time observatory trips. Another reason to return.

Tekapo is probably a worthwhile destination on its own but if just driving past, the lakefront makes a good place for a stop to see the beautiful lake with the mountains behind. However, Lake Pukaki (to the west near Twizel) is much more scenic with Mt Cook behind it, so consider continuing to there.

What an exquisite part of the world this is. The blue lake, the surrounding mountains and the Lupins in Spring were a sight to see. One of the spots not to be missed if you are touring the South Island

Tekapo will take your breath away. The deep turquoise colour is astounding and if you are lucky enough to get a clear calm day it’s a sight that will live with you for the rest of your life. It’s the sort of place that words can’t describe. However......
It’s also one of New Zealand’s top tourism destinations and can get very crowded. Particularly around the church of the good shepherd. Go at dawn and you will be alone except for the small gaggle of infptrepid photographers.
The centre of the town is a dump and that’s putting it kindly, there is no evidence of p,anting or planning control. The rash of ugly new houses is despoiling the most beautiful of places but no one seems to care.

Go outside the main tourist times and enjoy this magical place. Drive up Godley Peaks road beside the lake for magnificent views.

We visited for three days and fell in
love with this gorgeous area. The
lupines were in full bloom and were an
amazing site. We enjoyed blue skies,
warm summer days, snow capped
mountains and flowers in abundance.
Beautiful little chapel overlooking the
lake - 4 weddings in the time we were
there.
