“Outdated and not value for money”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2013

We stayed here as a last minute booking as there was limited availability in the rest of the village. The reception staff were very welcoming but we were very disappointed with our room. It seems that no money has been invested in the hotel for a long time and the rooms and communal areas seemed very tired and outdated. The room was clean enough and the bed comfortable, but it definitely wasn't luxury or worth the $130 per night, especially when compared to the other great places we had stayed in elsewhere. Some serious money needs to be invested in this place before the cost per night can be justified.

It was my utter misfortune to forget my wallet when I left this morning. Fifteen minutes later when I returned Housekeepers had already stripped my room and no wallet was handed into Reception. When I left the door was locked and when I returned housekeeping had accessed the room but no wallet had been found. Yet it was left beside the key on the bedside table key was found by housekeeping but no wallet. I found Management unsupportive to a customer who was now in a situation where they had no money or access to all the other essentials held in a wallet. They didn't even offer a cup of coffee while I tried to sort the situation myself. I respect their repeated acts of loyalty to their staff that they are all 100% honest. As an employer myself we are only as good as our worst staff member on their worst day. Overall the place was disgusting with lack of Management. Customer Service was non existent

Even minor repairs would improve this hotel eg in our room -mend tear in bedspread, get a small mat to cover worn piece by ranchsliders, paint touch-ups and nail/glue back loose trim and tiles in the bathroom. Probably a total bathroom refit would be the best way to greatly improve the rooms. Not good value for $130 a night be we had little choice as the town was pretty much booked out - pre- booking where you want to stay is recommended!
Positives: Receptionist was pleasant and helpful. Spa was good though spa/fitness room smelt mildewy. Quite good view of the lake over roofs of other units. And of course the lake and Mt John are fabulous.

First impressions walking into the hotel were ok, as the reception area seems quite nice. The rest of the hotel though is liking walking through a wormhole into the past - the lounge/"entertainment" area is very outdated, it was like being in a retirement home. The restaurant is quite small, as is the bar area which doesn't have a very good range, and the staff aren't the most approachable people either.

The rooms were not good either. The lake view was pretty good, although still not what I expected, thought it would be a bit closer! Other than that, the room had limited supplies (including the smallest TV I have ever seen), our key card kept expiring and had to walk to reception to get it re-activated, the room above ours had very squeaky floor boards and could hear the occupants walking around all the time, even at very early hours in the morning.

We had the breakfast buffet included in our room price, and it was good enough for me, but could be very basic for others. However, the dinner buffet was not good and definitely not worth $30 each!

This place is definitely not value for money, so much work needs to be done! Won't be staying here again.

This is a very old hotel to the right as you drive over the bridge. Built in the 1970's nothing has been spent on this hotel to upgrade it since then.
The hotel consists of three blocks of two story 1970's style motel blocks. Some rooms surrounding a very uninviting pool and the main building which consists of a restaurant and bar and an upstairs area that looks like it is mainly used for tour groups.
I stayed at the hotel in 1980 and it was starting to look old then. After walking around the hotel before going in I saw what they called their deluxe rooms. They are not deluxe by any stretch of the imagination, very old and run down. I did notice some nice Danish furniture which is very trendy nowadays and fetching good prices remnants of the '70's.
We took the budget room which I thought couldn't be much worse than the deluxe rooms.
Stepping into the room I had flash backs to the '70's. There was the same orange carpet that was in our house in 1969, the wallpaper was the same as was in my brother's room in '74. The vanity in the bathroom was the same as I remember in our bathroom in the 60's I could list all the other things. If you are looking for a retro stay then this is the place as not a cent has been spent since it opened.
The bathroom had a sign saying there was only a 135 litre tank of hot water and that it was likely to run out. The trick is get in straight after each other and it is fine. If you don't the tank will fill with cold water and you will have cold shower.
For $85.00 I am sure you can find something better somewhere in town, if not then head to the next town Twizel which has much better accommodation.
On a positive I had a good nights sleep so the hotel saved itself from getting a terrible rating to a poor.

Room Tip: Don't be fooled by the more expensive deluxe rooms they are no better than the budget ones.

In 4 weeks in NZ, this was one of the dearest in price and the least equipped. We decided not to buy their dinner or breakfast or purchase Internet from them as they had enough of our money already. I notice the staff in reception stand on a carpet square over threadbare carpet.
Having the means to make our own breakfast, like a toaster, plates and cutlery, plus free Internet, would have made us happier about this accommodation.

The room was tea and coffee making only, the bedside table on my side was turned sideways and jammed into the bed so the drawers could not be used.
The hotel badly needs refurbishing, it has been around for decades, and it has not kept up to modern standards.
It has a lakefront location but anyone staying elsewhere has access to this land, so my advice is try the cabins at the holiday park and they would probably be better equipped.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere

Was not happy with room at all. The only good thing was the lake view. Carpet was so worn you could see the concrete. Shower was in bath, which for two older not so fit travellers was a nightmare. You almost needed a stepladder to get in and getting out was an accident waiting to happen. That is not to mention the mould around the bath. Everything was tired and worn with a lot of maintainance needed. Trying to turn the switch on to use my hairdryer was almost impossible. We paid top money for the room and expected so much more. Staying at this hotel was deffinitely a low point of our holiday, they cut corners in so many ways even charging for the complimentary toiletries. They need to lower their charges to reflect the condition of the rooms.

Room Tip: Maybe ask to see your room first
