“Lovely French house”

We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the house and very much enjoyed our stay. It was bigger than we expected - it’s difficult to get a sense of size of properties from photos so were assuming if anything it would be smaller but on this occasion the house and outdoor space were a very good size. The house is very French which we liked and even though it has some quirky elements to it this was part of the makeup of the house and added to its character. The property was clean and well equipped.
Downstairs there is a large sitting room, hallway, dining room and kitchen. Through the kitchen is a scullery-type area with sink, dishwasher and washing machine and from here you access the toilet and shower. Access to the outdoor area and pool is through the scullery area or the hallway.
Upstairs there are 3 large bedrooms. Access to the 3rd bedroom is through the second bedroom and down some steps. There is a toilet and sink upstairs but no other bathroom. The shower room downstairs is the only bathroom as such, but we didn’t find that a problem (although access to this is through the kitchen).
Outdoors there is a good sized seating area with table and chairs. We would have found a sun umbrella useful on some days, but there was shade along one side of the pool at various points in the day. There were a number of loungers around the pool and the pool was heated during the day with a system set to timer so we didn’t have to do anything and it made the water a nice temperature to be in.
The house and kitchen was well equipped throughout and had WiFi. It was the little touches that we liked, such as towels being provided and a welcome pack of milk, wine, juice and brioche when we arrived (as we arrived late in the evening with no provisions these were very welcome). A few fans for the bedrooms would have been useful for when it was hot.
The house is set in a small village with a small boulangerie, general store and bar with a restaurant (which we ate in one night and had a good meal, but is only open at weekends). The nearest town and supermarket were at Pouzauges, about 15 minute drive away.
Overall we enjoyed staying in this house – it felt very French, there was plenty of room for 4 of us to be together or have our own space and we enjoyed the outdoor area and pool.

“Potential, but it needs improvement”
Reviewed 20 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

This could be a really nice village property and it is well situated for Le Puy du fou and other places of interest but the lack of cleanliness and poor standard of the bathrooms left us disappointed. The front of the house is unwelcoming, its front steps were dirty with grass growing out of them.
On arrival we felt obliged to clean some areas of the house, in particular the stairs.
In the downstairs shower/toilet the door didnt close properly and the shower door was incorrectly fitted which meant that after each shower the floor was full of water.
The upstairs bathoom was poorly finished, notably a bare lightbulb as lighting and ugly pipe work. The toilet seat was completeley loose and the bathroom ( sink + toilet ) upstaires was rather substandard.
The kitchen has no sink as such, one has to go to the scullery down the steps to a rather basic sink to fetch water, a pity for an otherwise well equiped kitchen.
The property is adversided as having central heating: this is not the case, there are electrical radiators throughout, but one cannot leave them on overnight, and we were freezing, because there where no extra blankets available. My daughter slept with several layers on. The standard of the bedding was otherwise good and the decoration pleasing.
We 've felt we had paid too much for those 4 nights ( 480€ for 4 people - 2 adults + 2 children)
Overall, lots of potential but sadly unfulfilled at the moment..
A fact which did spoil our much longed short stay.

Management Response

Constructive criticism is very useful and welcomed but I do think it was very mean to post such a harsh review.
At the time of the booking, the house was advertised as a 2 bedroomed house, but to accommodate the needs of this family who have 2 teenage children, a girl and a boy we said we would renovate the 3rd bedroom to a useable standard for no extra cost.
This was the first rental for this house and admittedly some of the criticisms were justified and were overlooked simply because we were under pressure to get the 3rd bedroom ready. Subsequently we have rectified all the issues mentioned. The allegations that parts of the house were dirty is simply untrue, the stairs were a bit worn looking but certainly not dirty.
I personally greeted the family at the house and gave them our number and asked them to call if they needed anything. I could have easily provided more blankets and addressed most of the other niggles in less than an hour but they did not call me.
It’s a shame that no good points got a mention, i.e. the effort made by ourselves to ensure the extra bedroom was ready at no extra cost, the extensive welcome pack provided, the lovely pool and terrace and the house itself which has been widely praised by other guests
