Saadani Safari Lodge
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Our second visit to Saadani Safari Lodge, heaven on earth and planning the next visit.

As you open the door of your bungalow you are greeted with a morning view of the sun rising over the Indian Ocean. The golden sands are so fine they tickle your toes as you walk along the deserted beach finding animal footprints. You are in the Saadani National Park.

At the rear of your bungalow the bush with game drives available to see wild life such as lions, elephants, leopard and more whilst having a nature lesson about the bush, birds and insects. This is apart from the animals who frequently visit the lodge’s water hole.

With sea or river safaris, village and bush walks to do the days disappear too quickly.

All of the staff going above and beyond. We would like to call them all friends after our 6 night stay, June 2014. They all work to make your stay enjoyable and a memorable.

Saadani managers, Graeme and Candy, constantly strive to ensure the guests every whim is catered for. They and their happy team succeed in every way and always with a smile. We cannot thank them all enough for all the thrills and fun we had as guests in the lodge.

Room Tip: They all open to the sun rise over the Indian Ocean

Who would have known? We had been on a camping safari in northern Tanzania for ten days before ending up at the Saadani Safari Lodge on the coast. What a way to end the trip! This is truly Five Star lodging at its best. The accommodations, the food, the service and, most of all, the hospitality of your hosts and their fantastic employees - I have never seen better. To top it off you have swimming pools, beach front thatched roof rooms that catch the sea breezes and it is all within the boundaries of one of Tanzania's national parks. They can provide a couple of unique safari experiences (land and river). Saadani Safari Lodge was one of the highlights fantastic African vacations where every day exceeded the experiences of the day before.

I stayed at the lodge at the end of March just before it closed for the long rains - the rain arrived early which made my stay less than perfect. The heavy rains turn the dirt roads to mud and the animals scatter so although the location is amazing I advise not visiting in late March! My hosts Candy and Graham were very friendly and they, the great staff and fantastic food made up for wet weather. The birdlife was abundant and on the river I saw colobus monkeys for the first time which was amazing. The location on the beach is great and the infinity pool is a great place to laze and watch the world go by.

This is where the Indian ocean meets the African bush and the footprints on the beach are both human and animal. Seamlessly sandwiched in between this unique part of Africa is Saadani Safari Lodge with it's beautiful makuti rooms dotted along an unspoiled Tanzanian coastline.

Raised walkways link all the rooms back to the heart of the lodge which is the restaurant area and main meeting place. However, tucked away along the walkways is the makadi bar, a great place to relax and have a sundowner and there is a choice of two swimming pools where you can also relax and watch the local fishermen fishing for the giant prawns which may well end up as your dinner that evening. The food here is quite delicious and beautifully presented by an excellent chef.

If you want to do something slightly more energetic than relaxing by the pool with a novel and a cold beer then a game drive will quickly remind you that this extraordinary place is in the middle of a game reserve where lions, leopards, elephants and most of the other big and little game is literally in your back yard. Do not be fooled by the unbelievably relaxed atmosphere at Saadani Safari Lodge, as this is the charm of it and it's due mainly to the brilliant management of this unique place by Graeme and Candy who run such a great team of happy, smiling and very capable staff.

If it's relaxation but with the occasional game drive thrown in when ever you want... then this is the place to come.

In Sadaani, you get the feeling that you´re all alone when you´re on safari. And here, you actually are. This place is really close on the wilderness, and if you´re already sick of all that lioning and elephant-watching-- note that you have an unspilt beach right on your porch. There are bush-bucks in the "garden", elephants come to the water tower on the property. And they´ve really thought the whole place through: You get your own recycled water bottle on arrival to decrease the impact on the environment and the staff are welcoming without trying too hard to please you.

Our game-driver Isak was knowledgable and enthusiastic-- and the couple who runs the place are naturally generous. They seem to love what they do and are excited to share their enthusiasm, always trying new things-- maybe that´s what makes this Safari lodge a dynamic place.
Outside and inside showers, luxury shampoo and the pool…Oh- the pool…This pool is splendid. Perfectly chilled and good for swimming- pristine blue, overlooking the beach. We are still talking about this pool. This pool must be tried.
Food is great and varied, the atmosphere in the restaurant is relaxed, breakfast is everything you wanted and dreamed of. (Best pancakes had so far in East Africa)- and you get some real healthy options too, fresh fruit, pumpkin and orange soup etc.

I could on for hours. I want to say thank you for an unforgettable time in this wonderful, wonderful lodge. I would recommend it to everyone from everywhere.

Room Tip: Any room, really.

We wanted to stay "safari" but we also wanted to enjoy the beach after 16 days in the bush. Sadaani safari Lodge was just perfect. We stayed there from the 16 January to 18th January 2014 and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. The place was just what we wanted: private, quiet, wild, clean and perfect service! the bungalows on the beach were so pretty, lovely bathrooms, beautiful view to the sea and just miles of unspoilt beach. The food was outstanding, we were spoilt from the moment we arrived until the moment we had to leave (we would have loved to stay another night...) Everybody was so friendly and did everything to make us comfortable. Game drives in the morning and beach in the afternoon, what else can you wish...We will be back, that is for sure.

Sanctuary Saadani Safari Lodge's front yard is literally the beach, unspoiled East African coastline, while the lodge's backyard is Tanzania's wild bush, providing opportunities for early-morning game drives and wildlife viewing. The suites are lovely and private - each beach-side cottage comes with loungers where you can watch local fisherman along the shores of the Indian Ocean. Mine came equipped with a sun hat and sarong making it very easy to assimilate into the natural beach surroundings. I absolutely adored my stay here. Highly recommend the beach-side seafood barbecue and visits to Saadani village.
