This is a small, exceptionally friendly, delightfully wacky place. Kalli and Cathy are great hosts. MM and Louie run the bar and restaurant. Food is plentiful and varied. A place just to hang and enjoy the beautiful beach and sunsets. If you are so inclined, whether a veteran or rookie, Veronica and Ronny will take care of your diving pursuits. Many gorgeous sites, including two wrecks. We stayed 12 days and hated to leave. Most places are the opposite, you get tired of them and your routines. Not here, you feel like a member of a family.

I loved it and i'll definitely be back.

The way that the resort was designed makes it easy to have fun, relax, or both. It's fun because I don't think you'll run out of entertainment. There's always something new to notice, watch, play with, read, or just enjoy. But it's also relaxing. The staff will pamper you with delicious food in a laid back ambiance. I enjoyed the privacy granted by controlling the number of guests they took in. The sand is clean, but a bit darker and with some drift wood during our visit due to the recent storms. But sunset was gorgeous!

They have a very professional management and staff. They're a step ahead in meeting your needs, if you ever do need or want anything. After settling in, we read their very comprehensive "resort manual" for a short while. As a result, the only time i had to go to the front desk was for extra blankets. The staff cleans the rooms everyday. If they didn't redo the bed, it's probably because your things are on the bed and they're not allowed to touch guests' things :P

I hope more people go here so they can make MORE interesting rooms! :3

It’s my favorite place in the Philippines, maybe because when I’m there I forgot everything and I’m feeling the joy of discovering the spirit of this place. I have been there 4 times already, and can not wait next time...

This place is great for divers and those who just want to relax. They food was good considering it is quite far from town. Dishes are creatively served in generous quantities. Wifi is not free and often erratic. The rooms are generous and incredibly decorated with such creativity to sometimes borderline tacky. Light switches, handles and fixtures are so creatively made out of left items, broken equipment and appliances. The creativity that went into the whole resort is in itself a sight to behold. The quality of the mattresses and pillows are not 5 star, the air-conditioner in our room was slightly under-powered but otherwise it was very comfortable.

The only thing is that the beach does not have the nicest sand compared to other resorts but it is very swimmable and child friendly. There aren't too many activities around the area so being with a group of friends to entertain yourselves is important if you are not there for scuba diving. It is a very long trip to the resort from Bacolod City. The drive is quite nice seeing the very green countryside. I am just not too sure if the long drive is worth the so-so beach.

The sand on Sugar Beach is stone-based and not coral-based, hence it turns brown when wet. In the dry season however, it is nearly white as the sun dries and bleaches it.
Being affected by the southwest monsoon “Habagat”, Sipalay’s best season is certainly not during the months of June – October. Nevertheless, if the weather means well, guests can enjoy best water and beach conditions even during rainy season, which admittedly wasn’t the case this August (strong Typhoons stroke the Philippines and flooded Manila for several days). All the same, the prime task after a storm is to clean the beach and guests frequently compliment on the immaculately clean beachfront of Takatuka.
The resorts on Sugar Beach offer various activities from snorkeling, island hopping, volley ball, ping pong etc. to kayaking and diving. Guests also have a nice choice of guided and self-guided tours. It goes without saying that all this is very much weather-dependent and seasonal.

The 1 kilometer stretch of sand on "Sugar Beach" has about ten guesthouses, though many were closed and/or empty when we walked down in the mist. Out of the two we checked out, we chose to stay at Takatuka Lodge, which seems to be the priciest place on the block, and the only one to offer diving. Though their diving was called off because the weather was awful, their prices were still high, and we ended up paying 1200P/night for a fan room. Thankfully, they comped the wifi, which typically costs 50P/30 minutes!

All the rooms at Takatuka are unique in design, and part of the fun was trying to find the light switch, the shower handle, etc.

Like many other places on the beach, Takatuka has hammocks, lounge chairs, a pool table, and darts, but unfortunately, the staff pretty much shut the doors and the lights at 8pm, which made it a bit awkward to enjoy any of the games. One night they even forgot that we had gone out for dinner nd completely locked us out of the hotel. It honestly seemed like they didn't want us there. There was only one other group of guests, so perhaps they just didn't feel like it was worth their time or money to keep the place open.

Sugar Beach is a very remote little paradise, which implicates that everything has to be hauled by boat and on foot in the rainy season and during bad weather. Because of the isolated location, internet is only available over a costly satellite connection and therefore, WIFI cannot be offered for free.
Takatuka’s restaurant opens as early as 7:00 in the morning and serves a full menu throughout the day. In spite of the monsoon season the resort is always fully operational. The restaurant is open in the evening until the last guest retreats. It is futile to keep on the lights all night and the staff waiting in the empty restaurant, while they still have to cross the river in the stormy night (quite an adventure) to get home to their families.
The majority of Takatuka guests are delighted to be allowed to help themselves at the fridges in the night and to play billiards until morning without keeping the staff up till late. They are shown the various light switches in order for them to close down the place before they go to bed. Furthermore, guests always have the option to bring board games to their room or veranda.
One wing of the illuminated entrance door is always left ajar for guests dining out in the evening, except during heavy storms otherwise the restaurant would be damaged by strong rain and winds. But the all-weather screens can easily be lifted to gain entrance.
Takatuka’s room rates might be slightly higher than some other resorts at the beach, but it definitely offers more comfort and value for money. Moreover, during rainy season, guests staying for 3 nights and more can avail themselves of a low-season rate.

I went to this beach resort with my friend. And we were shock with the art of this resort. Because every room has its own style of art. We took the room that looks like it was owned by a guitarist. We stayed for two nights in that resort. And we met lots of new friends in that place. Every night we stay in the lobby and play some board games and talk to them. And the owner and his wife is really good. Because her wife is the one cooking for the us. And those owners are really approachable and kind... Thanks for that experience TAkatuka.. :)

Nice little hotel on Sugar beach with great food and the funkiest rooms this side of the world. The owners take pride in this work of art that they transformed into a hotel over the years. Great service and very nice staff. Your choice on Sugar Beach!
