“An enjoyable train day trip for the whole family”
Reviewed 24 September 2013

We can thoroughly recommend this tourist train journey for the whole family, although note the commentary is all in French!

We parked for free at Rivesaltes station and took this tourist train to Axat. It is approximately two hour enjoyable train journey each way, with a change of trains half way that switches over to a choice of open or part closed carriage. The scenery is stunning with open countryside and mountains, vineyards, some really high viaducts and castles. Most of journey is at 20mph and the train occasionally stopped for commentary and opportunity for photographs from the stationary train.

There is a heated swimming pool at Axat, unfortunately we were not aware of this so be sure to take your swimming costumes and towels! There’s no food at Axat station although there is coffee available to purchase! There are restaurants nearby that we were advised to pre-book! Luckily for us we took a picnic with us, which we enjoyed sitting on the grass outside of the swimming pool area! Our advice – take a picnic with you!

Taking a meander into Axat it became apparent most shops are closed between 1200 and 1400 so we spent a relaxing afternoon enjoying the sun and nature at Axat’s riverside before returned to the later train. In Axat was a newsagent where you can purchase drinks or small snacks.
Check out the online train guide which is available to download in English at http://www.tpcf.fr/.

We would enjoy this train journey again!

“Excellent Day Trip for the whole family”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

Can thoughly recommend this train journey for the whole family - although be aware that the commentry is in French,

It is a two hour journey each way, with a change of trains 1/2 way. The scenary is stunning, vinyards, castles, mountains etc, all at about 30kph. Unlike some other train trips, my 5 year old did not fall asleep on the way back.

There is a great (heated) swimming pool at Axat, which is a lovely thing to do at the end of the journey up the line. However be warned, there is no restaurant at the swimming pool despite being told there was at the station in Riversaltes. The swimming pool has a snack machine (crisps, choc bars, cold drinks) and a coffee (instant) machine.

***** Take a picnic with you *****

Also, if you take the 09:30 train from Riversaltes, you arrive at around 12 noon in Axat. Axat closes down at 12:00 to 14:00. So there is no using the swimming pool slide for the kids before 14:00. The train back is at 14:30.

Also, if you don't take a picnic (we wanted to eat at the swmiinig pool "restaurant"), you can make a booking for a restaurant in town, and there were two shops open, a patisserie (with bread phew!), and a small newsagent, which had some ham and cheese - the others (including the "general store") had closed for lunch.

We will be going on this train journey again.
