We were so looking forward to a warm spring vacation in the southwest of France, and instead it rained and rained, wet and cool, sometimes cold. Kate and Stephen more than made up for our disappointment in the weather, and made our stay sensational. Everything is perfect at Le Petit Chateau without being stuffy. The setting is spectacular, especially when the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees emerge right outside your bedroom window. The decor is tasteful, period appropriate, and has a clean, almost zen feel at times--just lovely. And we truly appreciated the lavish breakfasts, which allowed us to linger in the morning. But really, the creme de la creme is Stephen and Kate's warm, exceptional hospitality. There are too many examples to cite, but one stands out for me. One morning we took advantage of a sun break and walked into town to have lunch, but by the time we finished, it was pouring rain. We started our way up the hill, angling our flimsy umbrellas to avoid the brunt of the shower, and five minutes into our walk, Stephen and Kate pulled up beside us in their car. "Care for a lift?" Stephen said, "We thought we'd find you here." As they say, that is priceless.
We were sad to leave and we fully intend to return next time we are in the region.
