Museum fur Unterwasser-Archaologie

was a good Museum but manily to do with the local port and 'home' shipping companies - very little about underwater side of things - seems there was a lower floor that was not open!

The "Museum of Underwater Archeology" is located in a listed building, a huge steel construction in the old ferry harbour and offers a nice view on the harbour of Sassnitz (but for this you don't have to go in the museum). Scandlines is still the current owner of the building and so currently there is an exhibition on 100 years of history of the company and the ferry lines (Königslinie Sassnitz-Trelleborg 1909-2009) in the same hall as the "Museum of Underwater Archeology". It's all rather confusing when you go in. We were interested in the ferry history, as this line used to be an important crossing to Denmark and Sweden (for people, trucks and even trains) and the exhibition should provide an nice piece of history. We were disappointed: the displays are old-fashioned and unattractive, and the history is not complete. For one reason or other the periods during the wars are not really documented, but just skipped, something we encountered more often in exhibitions in this part of the country, but leaves you with a cheated and frustrated feeling. The exhibition could be an interesting time document, but now it's a missed chance.
Then remains the underwater archeology museum: very small and not very attractive either, even though the entrance fee is very low. We went on a rainy day, but I wouldn't really bother.
