“Germany nice....hotel not so nice !”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

had a 3 night stay here and to say the least we were disappointed with this hotel , it is very dated, our room consisted of a large bed with 2 separate mattresses and 2 separate quilts which is quite annoying when sleeping together as they keep separating , sheets had seen better days and had repairs to them, basic items that we would expect in a hotel like a hairdryer, iron , tea/coffee making facilities were not provided. The views from the front of the Hotel are lovely across the river and hills , but a few feet behind is a railway line with both passenger and freight trains passing through frequently so very noisy . Bathroom light fitting had no shade around the ceiling fitting which was of a type that it should of had ! a bulb was also missing in the bedroom light fitting. Breakfast was minimal , consisting of bread rolls, ham, cheese, hard boiled eggs, jam,, plain yoghurt and 2 cereals ...until one ran out then there was no more , not sure how a hotel can run out of this item !! didn't sample the dinner menu as we ate elsewhere. The small balcony was nice with a table and couple of chairs but the trains spoilt sitting out there. The owner seemed pleasant enough , and with some updating and a few extras this could be a better hotel, it just seemed like a cold unwelcoming cheap place, bit like being in a hostel , which is a shame as there are some lovely places around the area.

My wife and I just spent the weekend at the Hotel Brauer. Although we had a very nice weekend overall, we were quite disappointed in Hotel Brauer. The people were very friendly but the hotel was old, cheap and noisy. The listing states it was renovated in 2010 but clearly not all of the rooms.

I chose the hotel because it seemed to be a good location between Moselkern (Burg Eltz) and Cochem. They had free parking and no extra fees for pets. The hotel was quite easy to find and there was plenty of parking. We were able to store our bikes and bike rack in their garage which was nice.

We were in the builind over the garage. The room was quite clean and in decent condition; however it was simply very old. The furniture looked to be from the 1970’s including the mattresses and sheets. The mattresses were honestly horrible; it was like we were sleeping in canoes. The fabric on the pillow cases were very thin with some holes.

The room had a very nice view looking over the river to the hills and grape vinyards on the other side. The location along the river seemed like it would be ideal. Unfortunately the hotel is between Moselstrasse (B416) in the front and the train tracks directly in back. Therefore, it was a noisy location. This was made worse since it was a hot weekend and we had to keep the window open. There is no air conditioning or even fans to circulate the air. We heard quite clearly every truck, car and scooter riding by. One night we did shut the window and it was not that much better. The sound of the neighbors closing their shades was also quite loud. However, there is a positive side to this. It was not possible to sleep late. Therefore, by getting up earlier, you had more time to enjoy the area.

The bathroom was quite sparse with the little plastic packets of shampoo and wrapped soaps. The towels were worn but, again, clean. I am sure the tile was very nice at one time or another but it did not suit our tastes in the least. The toilet paper holder was stuck to the wall via suction cups. The shower head was also quite old and sprayed water in the most random directions. To get wet you had to be anywhere else other than directly below the shower head. Finally, there was no place in the shower to put the soap or shampoo. You either had to balance it on the faucet or put it on the floor.

There was very little place to put things. There was a little round table in the room but the space was mostly taken up but a tiny, old Grundig TV. There was no dresser or other drawers, only shelves in the closet. Also, bring your own “Do Not Disturb” sign; they don’t have them. The last morning we were woken up by the cleaning lady.

The breakfast was quite simple; however, they had hardly any fruit, no vegetables and only plain yogurt. The dining area also looks like it hasn’t been touched in 40 years or so. We thought about eating in the restaurant our last night because we were tired and hungry. There are not many restaurants around the hotel. We asked to see the menu but we were told that they did not offer a la carte dining. In the end we went to another restaurant around the corner that was quite good.

Thankfully we did not need to spend too much time in the hotel. There are a lot of things to do in the area and it is beautiful. We had a great weekend but the hotel needs a significant renovation. Unfortunately, I would not recommend Hotel Brauer.

A welcoming hotel with excellent hospitality and food but spoilt by the sparse bedrooms which were most unwelcoming and felt more like a prison cell with poor quality bedding.

Room Tip: Opt for a front side room otherwise you will be woken by the very close by trains which run througho...
