Travelled here the first 2 weeks of May with my wife and 2 boys aged 13 and 11. We usually go all inclusive 4 or 5 star. Being a snob it was an attempt to avoid the loud, snout-in-trough clientele that frequent our usual holiday hotel. Success !
A modern hotel, 99% unscathed by the February earthquakes and just the relaxing haven we were looking for. We had a Family Duplex Room which was very nice and all areas of the hotel were spotlessly clean. No problems with water pressure or temperature at any time and towels changed every day.Linen changed regurlarly. Limited T.V. channels.
Large pool, again, spotlessly clean, and very comfortable sunbeds. Shallow baby pool and main pool has a depth of 1.5 metres lowering to 1 metre.
Food was very nice, both breakfast and dinner.Always plenty of choice. Poolside taverna was nice at lunchtime with meals priced between 6-10 euros. The poolside bar served any drink you could desire but was a little pricey, 5 euros for a large beer and 8 euros for cocktails. A bottle of wine was 12 euros but unlike one of the previous reviewers, i found both red and white very nice indeed. Much better than previous hotels we have stayed at. All alcoholic drinks apart from the wine are half price between 4-6pm.Restaurant was much less canteen like than i was expecting and all the staff were fantastic, especially Fay and the young lady Giona who kept my glass topped up and always managed to spill a drop down the side of my glass. It was her first 2 weeks at the job and she was so charming and tried so hard that i found it endearing.
Elina at the pool bar was also exceptional. The beautiful Theadora doubled up as one of the receptionists and resident art expert. What an asset to the hotel she is. Mr George or George Kontorinis, the hotel Operations Manager is an absolute star. So friendly and always has an interesting story to tell about any subject in the world ! If you have a word with him, he can point you in the direction of a chap that will take you out to the uninhabited island.its only 5 minutes and he can pick you up whenever you choose.Because of the earthquake this and other watersports and tavernas weren't open along the beach but things should be up and running by now. The hotel manager was always walking around and the owner turned up 3 or 4 times whilst we were there. Both very friendly.
The hotel was fairly quiet during our stay, possibly due to the time of year, but i'd imagine most people use the hotel as a base to explore kefalonia and may not get hectic even in high season.Car hire is available a 1 minute walk from the hotel.
Entertainment is low key. George is still tinkling the ivories, very well in my opinion, and the outdoor cinema shows big films from the last few years. Modern art in the art gallery this year. Very interesting but over my head i'm afraid. Theadora did her best to explain !
My 2 boys and i used the tennis court every morning and spent the afternoons swimming and playing table tennis and reading. We didn't get to see much of the island but what we did see was beautiful.
Would definately recommend this hotel and will certainly be returning.Would probably stay in the swim up maisonettes next time. Didn't think so until we were shown around one and they really are very nice.

My wife and I stayed here 8th-22nd May which is obviously early in the season for the region and that in itself had a detrimental effect on our stay.
Local beach called Xi which was formally a blue flag beach was a major disappointment to us and did nothing to enhance our enjoyment of the area. Lots fo debris the whole width of the main section of the beach, the access steps were generally in a poor state of repair with several being in a quite dangerous state. In short, for whatever reason no attempt had been made to prepare the beach for the summer season.

In line with other reviews it has to be stressed that this property is indeed very isolated, however if you enjoy walking in the summer sun and taking in the local area and culture do not let this deter you from staying here. We walked into the nearest populated area, Lixouri, which is between 7kms-8kms away. It took around 90 mins. at a leisurely pace, you can get a taxi for your return journey from Lixouri and the SUGGESTED fare is 10 euros which we paid on every occasion, nothing less nothing more, however do the sensible thing and confirm the cost with the driver before getting into his taxi. You can also walk to Vatsa beach which has a taverna serving fresh fish, this walk is slightly shorter, 7 kms and unless the taverna will assist you in getting a taxi for your return journey you may have to walk back also. Another walk which generally follows the Lixouri road is that to Mekas Legas beach, again around 7km. Here just like Vatsa there is also an organised beach with sunbeds and bars / tavernas and just like Xi beach it has rich coloured red sand.
If walking is too much in the hot sun there is a car hire franchise right outside the hotel if you cannot do without your car for a week or two. There is also an excellent taverna just behind the beach bar at Xi beach situated up on the small hill near to the headland called Ninou Bapdiavoi, great for lunch times or just for a change from the hotel restuarant on the ocasional evening, staff and owners there are fantastic and food is traditional home made Greek.

Now to the hotel itself, some people have suggested this is not a 5 star worthy property.People should consider that standards vary from country to country and when comparing this hotel with other 5 star properties in Greece or the Mediterranean in general this hotel compares very favourably in our view. It has a large pool, with a generous amount of sunbeds and parasols, all in excellent condition which is not always the case in many hotels. An open air cinema on site,a very interesting art gallery containing the hotel proprietor's personal art collection, also the well adverised health and beauty Spa for that personal touch and finally a taverna for lunch times.Rooms are well appointed with quality furnishings and fittings, and as you would expect in a 5 star establishment everything works just as it should, yes beds are on the firm side but that is the norm for Greece and as you would expect in a non city centre continental European hotel there will be no coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms, it must be a particularly English quirk to expect to have these, please remember you are in Greece not England. The rooms also lack sea views due to the fact the hotel is set slightly inland. Food here in the restaurant which is typical Mediterranean, is very good, excellent variety at all meal times, some dishes very tasty, others not so much so but overall quality is high, house wine at the Apollonion is produced locally and is quite drinkable, especialy with the 20% discount applied making it only 12 euros a bottle.
Where this hotel shines though is in the quality of service that all in staff in every department of the hotel provide, always smiling, courteous and polite they are a credit to the hotel and its' staff training programme.
The only negative we found at the hotel during our early season stay were the many young families with crying babies or very young children, while some were very well behaved, some not so much so. That having been said we would return to the Apollonion. However it would have to be at a different time in the season in the hope that the beach had been brought up to standard and that the minority of poorly supervised children had left so that we too could enjoy our holiday.

just back last night from this holiday. what can we say this hotel is amazing. the staff from reception to bars to restaurant to cleaners r all very special people. nothing is too much trouble. pool waitress service, dining room staff so polite and were a joy.the weather was not so kind to us and u are out of it at this hotel. we would have hired a car if there for 2 weeks. the transfer is coach and ferry so beware on the days u travel it takes up a full day both days.however it is so worth it. xi beach is unspoilt and very very peaceful. only one or two little tavernas by the hotel and one other all inclusive hotel.there r swim up maisonettes for larger families but the sun is only partly on them part of the day. good for couples with children tho and cheaper than booking adjoining rooms I was told .hope we can go back sometime soon if u want relaxation try the spa all out of this world. excellent week all round apart from lack of sunshine.

Room Tip: ask for a quiete room although its not a noisey hotel some blocks have partial sea views but all is...

Firstly I would like to thank our Thomson rep Anthony and tour guide on the premier kefalonia discovery katalina both exemplary and assets to there companies! Very chatty genuine people who are passionate about there guests experience!

Secondly the bar and waiting staff are so nice and attentive it really makes a difference. I would also like to thank the receptionist that is really into her art she was great when she checked us in and looked around the gallery.

The hotel itself is beautiful, about 10mins from the local town and a short 20 min trip to argostoli it is the perfect; unspoilt location for a relaxing holiday. It cost about 15 euros each way to get to get to argostoli so this could get expensive. I would strongly recommend the hotel start running a shuttle bus for guest convenience.

Rooms are clean, spacious and generally all have good views. The pool is a good size and again clean and the grounds of the hotel are well kept. My only criticism again would be that there maybe a need to get some more sun lounges.

Outdoor cinema was really good and gave you something to do on An evening (because there's no night life), unfortunately the bar entertainment was a bit poor.

Would recommended hotel to anyone it's great!

Regarding the transportation to Lixouri, we kindly notify you that soon a public bus will do the service, twice every day at a very small fee. This is a standard service during the pick months (June, July, August & half September)

We stayed at the Apollonion Resort & Spa Hotel in May 2014, comprising two adults and two children (aged 14 and 12 yrs) staying in a family duplex room.
Hotel description: The hotel is situated in a very quiet countryside location. The Apollonion seemed relatively unaffected by the earthquakes which hit in February 2014 whereas the neighbouring Cephalonia Palace was having a severe remodelling and patching up with new balconies and roof. We felt two earth tremors whilst in the hotel, one at night which woke us up as the mirror wardrobe doors started to rattle and the other whilst we were walking near the pool which felt like a London tube train running underneath you. The hotel is very clean and modern and ALL the staff were very friendly and made you feel welcome and your stay very comfortable. Facilities (further detailed below) include spa (payable extra), pool, outdoor cinema, tennis court of good quality, games room, and poolside taverna. The beach is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel grounds had well -kept gardens with flowering plants and shrubs including lots of powerful scented Jasmine.

Rooms: Various room types but ours was a family duplex room, twins beds pushed together downstairs to make the master bed and two single beds in the bedroom on a mezzanine floor accessed via nice dark wood stairs with brushed steel decorative bannister. The room was of a good size and beds very comfortable with nice linens. The room was cleaned daily to a high standard. A small fridge but sadly no tea/coffee making facilities so take a travel kettle for a late night cuppa. Also included is a laptop safe, good air conditioning, hairdryer and lovely soft bathroom towels. TV has one UK news channel. Yellow pool towels can be obtained from reception free of charge. Room Tip: I couldn’t really see the advantage of the rooms with private pools as the pools are actually joined to all the other private pools so in effect, you have a smaller communal pool away from the main pool. Rooms in the Aphrodite block are over the bar area and therefore experience some music until midnight although not that loud when you have doors closed, plus nice to sit on the enclosed balcony and have music to listen to. Garden rooms are away from the main socialising area and so very quiet.

Restaurants: The main restaurant serves buffet breakfast from 0730 – 1000hrs and had pastries, bread, cakes, fruit, cereals, hot food of bacon, eggs, sausages, beans and omelettes made to order. Dinner is served from 1900 – 2100 hrs. The white house wine was nice at 12 Euro’s per bottle. I didn’t like the red at all. Bottled water was 2.25 Euros. All drinks can be signed for and charged to your room to avoid handling cash.
The open air Pagoda restaurant is adjacent to the pool and server lunch time meals (payable).

Art gallery: Attached to hotel and the only art gallery on the island. It offers free entry and is open from 2000-2200hrs and worth a visit.

Outdoor cinema: A great idea with seating for about 30 watching a selection of good quality films including Captain Correlli’s Mandolin (filmed in Kefalonia). Watching films under the stairs very appealing and blankets available from reception if the nights are chilly.

Entertainment: Keyboard player / DJ playing mix of genres over three nights a week. No organised activities for children as such although there were two small playgrounds (suitable for under 7’s) and a basement arcade with pool, air hockey, internet (all chargeable extras). Free wi-fi is advertised but in reality, we found it very hit and miss with regular disconnection. There is a LAN point in all rooms so may well be worth taking a cable to hook up laptops but as for wifi devices, don’t count on uninterrupted connection.

Bar: Comfortable seating with evening entertainment in the form of either DJ playing various genres, keyboard player. Happy hour is between 4pm and 6pm with half price alcoholic drinks and cocktails. Normal prices for cocktails were 8 Euros each and beer 5 Euros so budget carefully or go out to the tavernas where they are half the price.

Pool: Main pool is a reasonable size and has a depth of 1.5 m shallowing to 1m with a small kids pool adjacent. Enough sun loungers whilst we were there but it was starting to fill up as we left. Not sure if any other sunbeds were being held in reserve. Free pool towels from reception and books could be borrowed from the small library in the basement.

Spa/ small gym: My wife had a pedicure for 34 Euro’s (which she said was equivalent to UK) and the spa offered other treatments ranging from 30 – 80 Euros.

Resort location: Overall, Xi Beach is a VERY quiet location, hardly a village and has Xi Beach (pronounced Zee) just a five minute stroll away from the hotel but was nothing special. No bars or clubs and one beach taverna and another opposite the Kefalonia Palace Hotel which is called Antonio’s and is owned by a very friendly, polite and chatty English woman and her Greek husband. Good food and good prices. Another taverna on the beach also serves good snacks at a reasonable price but is open during the day only. Some fifty yards from this taverna is a small shop selling snacks, beer and water which is ideal especially as the 1 ½ litre bottles of water are only 60 cents compared with 2.25 Euros in the hotel. Car hire is available next to hotel but there is NO BUS SERVICE so have to get taxi’s to main ports. Taxis into Lixouri were 10 Euro each way and they took you to the main square and ferry port. We had an evening in Lixouri but to be honest, not really worthy of the cost of the taxi as we found of interest apart from the large central square with bars.
Ferry to Argostolli: Leaves Lixouri on the hour up until about 10pm and costs 2.50 Euros per person each way and takes about 20 mins to cross the water. Tickets purchased on board but again, not a lot to see in Argostolli. I also share the view of others that the hotel should consider providing a shuttle service into Lixouri for a small charge at various times of the day and evening, maybe teaming up with the car hire company next door to provide the service. No cashpoint in hotel or resort but you are able to sign all expenditure to your room and pay in one go on departure.

The price we paid booking through Thomson was just £1440 for seven nights half board with daytime flights and transfers for two adults and two children.

Although classed as a 5 star hotel, compared with the UK standard it would be a 4 star. I would also suggest it is aimed at couple or families with older children. I think that if your children were a little roudy, they would stand out.

In summary …. A lovely hotel but in a remote location on the far side of the island to all the sights and excursions. Perfect for those seeking a relaxing hotel with good food and guests happy to stay locally in resort with little to do. A 7-10 day stay would be plenty.

Room Tip: Rooms with access to private pools are actually all joined into one private pool so in effect, you h...

On arrival at the hotel, it was obvious this was a fairly new and modern hotel. We arrived late in the evening and were greeted with a refreshing drink, check in was quick and we were made to feel very welcome. On arrival in our room there was some nice sandwiches, a bottle of water and some fruit, a nice touch after a long day.

During our stay we found every single staff member to be friendly and welcoming, from the reception staff, dining staff, bar staff, cleaners, each one a credit to the hotel. The managers / owners were also there during the evening and again very welcoming and polite.

There was plenty of choice in the restaurant both in the morning and at night, the chefs were always visible, they were only too happy to get more food if something was missing, I believe they went above and beyond!

The pool area was always clean and there was plenty of sun beds and umbrellas, though my personal opinion was that the pool wasn't particularly big. There was quite a few children there during our stay but they weren't too noisy as per a previous comment, kids are on holiday and they want to have a good time!

The only negative about the hotel is I thought the drinks were expensive. A cocktail was from €8 - €12 euro and they were never filled to the top and a pint of local beer was €5, though they did have happy hour between 4pm and 6pm and a daily half price cocktail, though this wasn't well advertised and only discovered this the evening before we left!

If you are looking for an active holiday then this isn't the place for you, other than 2 small tavernas there isn't anything else to do.

We travelled with Thomson and went on the island discovery excursion and this is the best trip I have ever been on from all my holidays, we went to so many beautiful places on the island and they didn't take you to any local winery or olive oil factory to try and sell you things......a nice change!

For a nice relaxing holiday then I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel, enjoy!

Room Tip: We were on ground floor and were very happy with this

I stayed here from the 22nd-29th May 2014, with my husband and two teenage girls, on a half board basis. The hotel is spotlessly clean, and the facilities are run efficiently. Service is excellent all round, and staff are friendly. We had a large duplex family room, with a mezzine room above, which was well laid out. A decent sized fridge was available, though no tea/coffee making facilities were in the room. There was a good range of buffet style food each evening, and we didn't eat the same thing twice (though we could have done if we'd wanted to). I recommend trying the different Greek dishes each night. Food was plentiful, and breakfasts also included a good range of hot and cold options. Happy hour is from 4-6pm, where cocktails are half price (4 Euros instead of 8 Euros). This was a great part of the late afternoon to look forward to, with a drink by the lovely pool. We had read the reviews before booking, and realised that the location of the hotel could put people off the hotel, so we hired a car from Avis at the airport, and were at the hotel within 70 minutes. I would suggest that you do hire a car if you are confident with some of the hair pin bends, so that you can see the island, otherwise you will be reliant on taxis. Xi Beach isn't worth the visit, so if you are after a beach holiday with no driving, then you should stay near Myrtos, Sami, AntiSamos or Skala, as there are more facilities here. Myrtos is about a 40 minute drive, and AntiSamos an hour from the hotel, and both are must sees. There are plenty of tavernas en route, where you can eat great fresh produce for a fraction of the price as a holiday in Spain or Turkey. Evening entertainment consisted of various singers, outdoor cinema, a basement games room (free table tennis - airhockey and billiards is a Euro or two), art gallery and a very small gym.
My only suggestions to the hotel are that the price of the drinks could be reduced in the evenings, so that more people will go and enjoy the music, as a few evenings were a bit quiet and so lacked atmosphere. The bar area wasn't that busy, as families were understandably bringing their own beers and enjoying the games room, or visiting one of the two local tavernas. The taverna on the hill (five minute walk), owned by the lady from Luton, was a great find - fantastic sea views, and great prices. Four Euros for four glasses of wine!!
A final suggestion might be having tea/coffee making, ironing facilities etc in the room, in line with a 4/5 star hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms have a good view, either of the mountains or the sea.
