Reviewed 13 August 2014

My husband and I have just got back from the Apollonian after a week there from the beginning of August. After having put a fair amount of research into finding a hotel in Kefalonia that offered high quality facilities and services, a chance to completely relax and do some exploring too, I think we found one of the best hotels on the island. Obviously it depends on what you are looking for in a holiday and the expectations you hold for it but this place exceeded our expectations of a good quality hotel, it was excellent - so completely ignore the reviews from 2010, they seem to be describing a completely different hotel.

The Apollonian is beautiful and clean, the staff work their socks off and can't do more to help you down to the small details, e.g. it was my birthday whilst out there and without any request they gave me a cake at dinner and sang happy birthday to me! We had a room over looking the pool and bar area out to the mountains and a partial sea view, it was beautiful, especially with the balcony you get. It was lovely just to spend a relaxed evening playing cards on the balcony surrounded by the warmth of the evening and hearing the background chatter of people at the bar below and the music (whatever the entertainment is); it made you feel part of the buzz but in your own space.

I was concerned with it being peak season and with the hotel being fully booked that it would be overcrowded and noisy, it never seemed to be either of those. Yes it may have been busy at peak times of breakfast and dinner but certainly not in an annoying way, there was always plenty of good food (we have fallen for the simple Greek salad big time!) and staff never kept you waiting. The pool was never overcrowded either, staff may have had to put extra sun loungers/chairs out on busy days and you have to be on the ball a bit more to grab a sun lounger but once there it's hard to leave the poolside, what with the pool side bar service with a massive drinks menu. They have a half price cocktail all day (4E) and half price on all alcoholic drinks (except wine) between 4 and 6 - we loved that! Treat yourself to a spa treatment, the full body massage was lovely.

Yes you do have to get a ferry transfer from Argostoli to Lixouri when you arrive but it just whets your appetite on the beauty of the island, so it shouldn't be a hassle but simply adds to the dreamlike feel the place emanates. Yes the hotel is 10mins from Lixouri and bar a couple of tavernas closer to the beach and 1 other hotel there is nowhere else to eat out in walking distance but again if you're just happy you don't have to cook your own food and satisfied with really good quality buffet food then the hotel's small isolation shouldn't be a problem at all.

We hired a car for one day (driving can be a bit daunting if you're not used to it in Greece/mountainous roads on the island) visiting Sami and some of the many gorgeous beaches on the island, went on a Thomson excursion another day, explored Lixouri and Argostoli and the rest was spent chilled by the pool (Xi beach was super busy). It was perfect for us as a couple but also seemed great for the many families that were there too. I can't recommend the Apollonian enough and it simply enhances the stunning scenery and relaxed atmosphere of what is the beautiful island of Kefalonia.

We stayed here the last week in July. The hotel is clean, modern & luxurious. We stayed in a family room above the bar, which I was initially worried would be too noisy in the evenings but we actually quite liked sitting on the balcony playing cards whilst listening to the music & watching people come and go. The room was on two levels, so the kids had their own floor, with a wardrobe & their own air conditioning unit; brilliant. It was also in a great spot for watching the kids in the pool during the daytime and had views of the sea & mountains too. The pool was just right, never too busy & we had lunch there ( just toasted sandwiches & fries) a couple of days which was very reasonable & convenient. Antonello's (otherwise known as Carol's), on the way to the beach serves very reasonable & tasty food. The games room kept the kids entertained, the spa is very friendly (I had a manicure there) and the art gallery is worth a visit. The cinema is a good idea, although 21.30 is a little late to start the films. Be sure to go and see the turtles in Argostoli harbour. Get the bus from the hotel into Lixouri, then hop on the ferry. You'll have time to see the turtles, have a look around the shops in Argostoli & have lunch & still make it back to Lixouri in time for the bus back to the hotel. Kefalonia is a beautiful island & we would definitely like to return, staying at the Apollonian.

Have just returned from this hotel having stayed there for the first week of August. From the moment we arrived nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They are all very attentive and polite. On our first night we were upgraded to a suite, but actually preferred the family room we had booked as although the suite was lovely & large, the bed for our two teenage children was what would have been the sofa in the lounge, so you can imagine what they said when they found out they were sleeping together. It would have been beautiful if it had only been the two of us!
The hotel took care of moving our luggage etc. on the second day to our family room. Again a lovely , modern spacious room, with a great view from our balcony on the second floor looking across the pool and to the sea beyond.
The hotel is spotlessly clean and the pool area is lovely. Sun beds were plentiful during our stay, and at times the pool was very quiet and its was like we had it to ourselves. I am not sure where everyone dissapeared too early afternoon?
The restaurants were all very good and I didn't think the drinks were expensive considering they almost have a captive audience due to the location, €5 for a large beer, €3 for a small beer, €12 for a bottle of wine, €8 for their cocktails and €6 for a gin and tonic, although a lot more Gin than tonic. They always had a cocktail of the day on half price and between 4pm and 6pm, all drinks were half price. They also have an art gallery (not had one of those in a hotel before), a out door cinema and Spa and Gym (but I we didn't use those, I was on holiday).
Overall would go back in a jiffy and would recommend this hotel to any one. It was full of people you would find in John Lewis having coffee and a cake on a Saturday morning, not a replica football shirt in sight. Just joking!

Stayed here last week July first week August this is a really good hotel very clean, everyone who works there is great especially the restaurant manager very funny and good with all ages . There are really no negatives about this place and all the reviews before only confirm what i experienced , its spotless, the pool is very nice , there was never a rush for sun beds (something which personally made it for me ) , various people from various countries all got along it was a pleasure to spend 2 weeks there . The only 2 things i would personally say would improve it even more is the possibility of a cash machine in the hotel due to its location and a courtesy shuttle bus service into Lixouri (every 2 hours would be more than enough ) to allow people to get into the town . Very small things but maybe would be nice , a big thank you to everyone who works there and thank you for making the holiday fantastic hope to return one day .

We're a family of four - our 2 boys are 9 and 7
We stayed at the Apollonion for the last week of July and first week of August 2014

Overall we really enjoyed our stay

The Apollonion is smaller than the 5 star family resorts we have stayed in over recent times - the benchmark for us being Sensatori in Tenerife (which will take some beating)

That said, the Apollonion was about £2.5k cheaper this season

The hotel is immaculate - including grounds. We had a nicely appointed and spacious duplex room with mezzanine kids bedroom - better than Sensatori in fact

The hotel has a small intimate feel - something you also can't say for Sensatori

Almost all staff were superbly attentive and friendly - in particular Elina, Fay, Theodora, Theo, Andreas and Marina

There was happy hour and cocktail of the day in a nice pool area

On site there was a reasonable alacarte lunchtime restaurant (only open in day), evening dining was courtesy of a buffet restaurant.

Accommodation was half board with all drinks and lunches having to be paid for (on reflection this cost was the same as going FB or all inclusive at sew here like a Sensatori)

Enjoyed mussels, burger and club sandwich on the alacarte lunchtime menu - the grilled shrimp (4) weren't good value

The local beach (Xi) had a couple of bars - Anotellos was reasonable, as was Nissis, avoid Averto beach bar (for food at least).

Hotel really annoyed me on first night when we were sent straight into restaurant as we arrived - as it was closing - only for them to try and charge me cash for my drinks as we as yet didn't have a room allocated - er, get a grip I'm here for two weeks, where am I going to go??

You have to queue for food at peak times in the buffet. We did tire of the buffet - not that's it's samey persay - but there are lots of sauce based dishes under heat lamps. Greek salads are amazing though and I did pick out a good accompaniment every night out of the dishes on offer, these included:

Steamed perch
Spicey sausage ratatouille
Moussaka
Chicken livers
Octopus
Potato salad
Spaghetti carbonara
Salmon with capers
Grilled chicken
King prawn linguine
Cheese wrapped in Aubergine in a ragu

Desserts were generally good

Drink prices are quite steep, a large Mythos is 5 euros, cocktails outside happy hour and excluding the daily specials are 8 euros. Happy hour and the all day special cocktail is half that

The house white wine is good and priced reasonably at 12 euros though

We spent around 1200 quid on lunches and drinks

Whilst a 50 minute full body massage is 40 euros, the spa then tried to charge us an extra 12 euros to use the associated steam room and hot tub (in the same session) - don't think so

The massage from Sarah was top notch however - I had two over the stay

The hotel, apart from the beach and couple of bars, is isolated - Lixouri is 7 km away (10 euros in cab). Lixouri is where the nearest cash machine is

The gym is weak - 2 treads, 2 bikes and some free weights. I ran most days in the surrounding hills instead - we did the "Lixouri half marathon", as we termed it, a few times - I.e to Lixouri and back (hilly and hot)

Pool was murky on a couple of days and stained swimwear?? The pool is officially open from 10 am till 6 pm - we went in and swam laps from 830, they asked you to get out at 1845. Pool towels are provided

The evening entertainment was lame, 3 nights were a DJ (who was good) the other nights was an organist / "singer" , who we called Dom Delouise (showing my age and love of Burt Reynolds movies there!) - who was BAD (so much so it funny)

The hotel has an outside cinema, movies were mixed and didn't start till 2130 (not great for kids)

There is no mini mart in the hotel yet there is no drink in the mini bar (missing a trick - no?) - we brought a few bits in from the limited little shop near the beach

You had to time your showers as water often tepid - no bad thing as weather boiling. That's said, good air con in the rooms

In summary, we generally enjoyed our stay at this intimate hotel. It's not perfect but we liked it overall - any shortcomings made up for by the excellent stafc

For me, mext time I'd revert to a bigger complex with more restaurant choices, more pools, a bit more variety in terms of entertainment and some organised sports next time. (For me this would justify the extra two and half thousand pounds for a sensatori type venue - certainly as this is full board with an all inclusive option)
