Just returned from a week with my son, daughter in law and 6 year old grandson. Booked through Thomson, A I, shortly after Christmas - bargain and a free child place !! ITS VERY EARLY SEASON !!
As well stated online and brochure - this is in a very remote location, but the transfer was quick and easy ( we missed the ferry - but had a nice wait in a bar) lovely on return with cracking views !!
The Thomson rep was new and had only been in post a week or so. We did not see anyone from Thomson on our return journey and were left to fend for ourselves on bus and ferry.
We had adjacent rooms, I had booked a single and had a double! The room smelt very damp and musty, I was convinced there was a wet towel somewhere, obviously had not been opened up before we arrived, and took a couple of days to go. Really got to the sinuses !! Comfortable enough, tiniest of bathrooms which you had to manouvre sideways into. Hairdryer was one of those stick things (useless really - you need your own) and 'Sky TV' had BBC World News / CNN only in english. Kettle and tea /coffee !! Room cleaned, fresh towels every day and fresh bedding. Only one lumpy hard pillow!! Every sound from other rooms reverberated very loudly. Free aircon, fridge.
Overall impression of the main building clean and shiny marble, main bar up quite steep steps which did not seem to have any form of disabled access (not that I needed it but there were couples struggling with pushchairs and other guests physically needing help up and down )
Nice reasonably priced gift shop, jewelry shop I did not see open.
Lovely big pool, and splash pool, sunscreens were 'pramhoods' which were all 'booked' by 8am. One of my pet hates. The pool was surrounded by cobbles, very painful under foot!! lovely green gardens but 'keep off the grass' !! Pool Bar needs a bit of a refurb...x
The retaurant was packed with tables far too close for comfort, and half of them not needed. I was not terribly impressed with the food. Buffet style, usual breakfast offerings, lunchtime and evening salad bar, hot meat / fish choice pasta / rice / chips. All the meats were served in a sauce / swimming in oil of some sort, traybaked. Not good for veggies (my daughter in law) as there was meat / fish in the mixed salads, and just one overboiled frozen veg choice. It would have been better to serve plain grilled / roast meats and offer a choice of sauces. Grandson lived on bread, chips and icecream and Oreos from the shop. And - my biggest bugbear - food was just barely warm, nothing worse than a cold fried runny egg. Needed a microwave to heat food up. Snacks (charged) of toasties were available at the pool bar, the 'all day buffet' consisted of cake.
All the staff here are brilliant - everyone friendly and helpful and hard working. The pool bar staff always smiling and laughing, Cannot fault anyone - didnt see the miserable barman others have mentioned but there was waiter in the restaurant who needed a good spray of Lynx - yeuk .. !
The animation team were new to the job, evening entertainment was pretty basic, kids disco (birdie song etc) musical chairs(??) karaoke, bingo, quizzes (poor english made these difficult) all done and dusted by 10pm.
Out of the hotel just 5 minutes to the famed orange beach with its clay cliffs, lovely walks!
The early season and remoteness meant there was nowhere to escape to for a change of scene or to eat. The beach tavernas were not open, nor was the local bus service operational. A 20E return taxi cab takes you to Lixouri, but there was not much open there either!! a further 5E return ferry fare each takes you to Agostini - a bigger town ...
Summing up, it was a bargain break in a nice hotel, my family chilled down in the sun and did nothing which was the purpose of the exercise. The remoteness and early season resulting in nowhere to escape to for a change of scene / food / entertainment meant that one week was enough - we would have climbed the walls with boredom for another week ..... x I would not like to be there in high season either ....xx A hire car is a necessity not an add on here...x
oohhh ... and dont forget the mozzie protection .. you'll need it x
