When you've finished reading this review you may conclude that my wife and I are family members but we're not. We were just made to feel that way by Julia, Tony and Alex. My wife Terry and I stayed at Masseria Cesarina on two separate occasions. Both visits were extraordinary; we shared many memorable dining experiences with this wonderful trio both in their dining room and at local restaurants known to our hosts. Walk into any of the fine local eateries with Julia, Tony and Alex and you'll immediately recognize the excellent relationship they have with their neighbors. During our two trips to the region I mentioned to Julia that I was trying to find any of a number of first cousins who had lived in nearby Giovinazzo. We were unsuccessful both times. Julia immediately said "not to worry" she would undertake the search and contact us when she located the cousins. Well, in January Julia e-mailed us that she had found my cousins and in fact had visited with them. She obtained phone numbers and an address to allow us to communicate with relatives we had not seen in 36 years. In fact, Julia has become friends with my cousins and they adore her. I've spoken with my family via telephone and SKYPE and they're constantly mentioning how helpful Julia has been. Has anyone ever stayed at a B&B that would go this far to make a guest happy? We will happily return to Masseria Cesarina as soon as we can with planned side trips to visit nearby family. All this made possible because of caring people who want nothing more than to make your stay with them as memorable as they can.
Ciao, Tutti, Terry and Frank.....

Had a really enjoyable five night break, Alex, Julia and Tony are the perfect hosts- couldn't do enough for us. Had a go at shelling almonds and picking olives whilst we were there. Good company, good food, great time.

Talk about surpassed expectations ! Julia , Tony and Alex provided hospitality , information and assistance well above and beyond the norm . A group of 9 Canadians landed at the Masseria on Oct 12/11 , and stayed 4 nights . The rooms are large , comfortable and well-appointed , the grounds are well-kept and lovely , the pool inviting !
But more importantly , we thought , was the feeling that we were very welcome , and that nothing was too much trouble for our hosts ; we were home !
Put those things together , and we all agree that this was our favourite B&B , from a lot of countries , EVER !!
Grazie Mille to Julia , Tony and Alex ; any return to Puglia for us will NECESSITATE a stay at Masseria Cesarina

This is a strange one as we didn't actually stay at Masseria Cesarina. Our story is that we met one of the owners, Tony after being made to feel really uncomfortable at our rented apartment. Tony, Alex and Julia took us under their wing, let us use their pool, introduced us to their friends and invited us to a bbq and party at their Masseria. This they did because they were concerned that our holiday in Puglia would be ruined because of the people we were staying with. They are truly hospitable people that will go out of their way for anyone.

The atmosphere at the Masseria is relaxed and friendly. They are full booked constantly and I can see why. It's a special place. Beautiful and relaxing. We did see one room and it was absolutely lovely and very clean. The pool is a sun trap with various guests hanging out, playing cards, and having a drink (in the place we were staying we weren't allowed to eat a biscuit within 200 yards of the pool!).

I've already booked for next year and you should do the same!

This is more than an excellent Bed and Breakfast; it is an information centre and meeting place for all nationalities. We spent 3 nights in the 2 adjoining bedrooms, ideal for a family. The masseria has been carefully renovated, is spotlessly clean and guests needs are taken into account every step of the way. Alex, Julia and Tony are the perfect hosts, and their relaxed approach contributes to the happy social atmosphere. We enjoyed hours by the pool, either swimming or relaxing in the comfortable poolside furniture. We especially enjoyed the very local restaurant, so much so we visited twice out of 3 nights. Our stay overlapped with the previous reviewer, and I would reiterate all that he said about Masseria Cesarina. For those who are also interested in sourcing the best gelateria, our vote went to L'Era Glaciale in Cisternino (also our favourite town) and Sugar in Castellana. Masseria Cesarina was for us the perfect introduction to Puglia and we certainly hope to be back.

The trio that runs this carefully renovated masseria- Alex, Julie and Tony- are what make this B&B the perfect base for exploring the region. I traveled with my 10-year old and 12-year old children, and we all loved this vacation, mainly due to the generosity of spirit shown by the hosts. We stayed in Castellana for 10 days, and next time will plan to stay longer.

The triple room with AC was spotless and comfortable. During our visit the plums, peaches and pears were in season, and available for picking on the farm. I loved the individually-brewed Italian coffee in the morning, and post-afternoon-swim English tea.

There are a number of good restaurants in the area, the closest "Il Piattato Fumante" is even within walking distance (if you are daring enough to walk along an Italian road). Otherwise you need a car to get to the local venues.

We met other families from Italy and Europe who were guests at the B&B - including a professional chef originally from the local town. The best part of our stay was the meals that we cooked in collaboration with other guests in the spacious B&B kitchen. Julie pointed us in the direction of the local butcher and pasta shop, as well as to the Castellana market on Saturday. Mario the fishmonger came by on Tuesday and supplied us with fresh calamari and gamberini. We even used the grill and had a BBQ. The masseria produces olive oil and offers a choice of affordable wines produced by Julie and Alex's relatives in the region.

So you get the picture - an amazing culinary exploration of Puglia, with fresh local ingredients is available right at the B&B (you do the shopping, cooking and cleanup - plus a 5 Euro charge per meal) !

It was difficult to coax my kids away from the pool, but when we did get away to visit the caverns at Castellana Grotte it was well-worth the effort. The town of Arberobello is a bit more touristy but also a memorable highlight. The kids will remember our search for the best locally-made gelatto, and the shops at Polignano a Mare and Castellana Grotte get high marks. Avoid the Safari zoo / amusement park at Fasano which is as expensive as it is pathetic. The Fishing Safari out of the Port of Monopoli port should also be skipped (we hauled in a total of 400g of fish in our nets) - but the offshore swim was amazing.

We're definitely going to be back. I will be sure to book well in advance, as I'm sure these guys will have plenty of business.
