Villa Romana Hotel
Ranked #1 of 3 Hotels in Porto Empedocle
Reviewed 3 October 2012

We arrived at the hotel from Aci Trezza near Catania where we had stayed at the very excellent Lachea Hotel. We had trouble finding the Hotel Villa Romano as the directions don't mention where to exit the main road or that the road leading down to the hotel, Via Mediterranee is one way and that you must go to the end of the road, double back on the parallel road then take the first right on to the sea front to find the hotel.
We arrived quite late and didn't want to go out for dinner so we had dinner in the hotel. Expensive: Euro 58 for the two of us. My first course was mussels and was excellent but the second course, breaded pork was inedible because it was too tough. My wife thought that her meal was good. Drinks were expensive. the service was slow and the waiter who served us, and again for breakfast, looked as though he was serving a life sentence rather than customers.
Breakfast was a buffet and quite extensive and good, although the miserable waiter was a bit of a downer.
The location is good behind the beach looking towards the ferry port across the bay but there is a much better beach round the corner.
The acid test: would I go back there? probably not.

Small room, compensated by a big balcony with seaview, equipped with sunbeds and a parasol. Clean. Little to choose from in the minibar, just water and mineralwater. Good A/C. Safe in the room. Nice breakfast in a beautiful "ballroom". The coffee was brilliant, aswell as the pastries.. Poolarea was great and they also had sunbeds on the beach. The hotel restaurant gave a good value. Free WIFI. Free Parking. Friendly staff. Short walking distance to a couple of beach restaurants and bars.

Villa Romana seemed to be one of the best options in the area, but despite this being probably true, standards have to increase sensibly. Hotel is relatively new but style is somewhat surpassed, rooms are ok (we had a sea view with big terrace but the view itself was not spectacular and chairs and chaise longues were dirty and not inviting) and hotel pool acceptable. Beach really a not-to-go and also hotel restaurant pricey and very average food. coming to service, people at the reception really trying their best and very kind, while at the restaurant - especially at breakfast - unprofessional and not kind, nor client-oriented. breakfast itself poor, with low quality food, something you would find in a 3star in the adriatic riviera. This area of Sicily needs serious development and touristic offer has to improve if some results are expected. By the way Porto Empedocle (where the hotel is located) is really sad and depressing. we chose it because it was on the sea and close to Valle dei Templi (worth the visit bs all means) and to Scala dei Turchi (really particular and spectacular). Found also a nice beach at Eraclea Minoa (25km further west) to definitely consider instead of the hotel beach.

Room Tip: sea view are not directly on the street, while non sea view are

I higly reccomend this hotel for travellers searching a high quality service, a peaceful area where to relax and enjoy a great sunset from the “Scala dei Turchi” located in a walking distance from the hotel. We especially thank Alessandro, the Sales Manager, for his warm welcome, the attentions reserved us during our staying and especially the restaurant suggestions.
Looking forward to be back soon in this hotel.

We stayed here for two nights while visiting Agrigento and the temples. I'd read that the beds were too hard and that it wasnt great but I thought it was fine. I like a hard bed. It was quite expensive compared to other locations but I guess that's the location. It's nice beside the sea and the hotel is clean and in good condition. The restaurant didnt blow us away either. The staff were friendly and did recommend a good restaurant in Agrigento though. In fact the guy told me that a place I had planned on going based on Trip advisor wasnt good at all. I took his word for it and the place he sent us was nice.

After reading reviews that said to stay away from the concrete jungle of Agrigento, we found this hotel right on the beach, not far from the Valley di Templi, the best preserved Greek temple ruins outside of Athens. The town itself is just ok, but this hotel was a gem. Beautiful, elegant, huge sandy beach, lovely pool, great dining area, and awesome balcony views onto the sea. Beach was not crowded, and it provided a nice place to relax after a hot day of sightseeing at the awesome Greek ruins and other towns in Sicily.

My wife and I stayed here on our trip around Sicily by accident. We had driven from Siracusa in the morning, visited Piazza Armerina in the afternoon, and we hadn't chosen a place to spend the night before we visited the ruins in Agrigento the next morning. This was the spirit of the trip, by the way: no pre-reserved hotels, we would stay wherever we felt like it. We were lucky the whole trip, but this time not so much. We drove into Porto Empedocle and found this, one of the very few hotels in the area. It was a bit expensive, but probably because the guy in the front desk realized we didn't have an option. The room was normal, and after we woke up we drove off, and did not take time to swim in the swimming pool or take a dip in the beach right in front. But both beach and swimming pool didn't look very appealing. Porto Empedocle is named after the philosopher who put forth the idea that everything in the world is made out of four elements, fire, water, earth and air. So it's a pretty historical place. We had dinner in town the only night we stayed and the fun thing was that we were probably the only foreigners around. Nice experience in the end, but wouldn't say this is a place to visit. Nothing special here.
