Il Gallo Giallo
This was our best meal during our one week stay in Tuscany, because the ambience, food and service all came together perfectly. Firstly, this restaurant is set within an idyllic spot, just off the main road between San Cascianio and Mercatale in Val di Pesa, surrounded by a serene garden, lovely views and located in a rustic Tuscan building with an open terrace. The service is family-based with the owner welcoming you and explaining the menu of the day. Our host was also very relaxed about our dog joining us on the terrace, which we appreciated. There is a good selection of traditional dishes such as Bruschetta, Crostini, and the famous steak, Bistecca Fiorentina. However, I was also pleased that special vegetarian dishes were on offer, such as a delicious Sformatino, a small Italian style soufflé made with vegetables and egg and topped with a tasty parmesan sauce. Our four main dishes were all excellent and creative, such as the pork skewers, home-made pasta and a local stewed beef, which was very tasty. At about 30 Euro per head, this place is well worth a visit, if you are in the Florence- Val di Pesa area. There is even a distant view of the city from the first floor of the building. The only slight negative was the lack of printed menu’s and any English translation, although English is spoken by the staff. Given all the good reviews, they may have to invest in such menus to please the growing number of foreign fans!
