We visited Rome, Florence and Venice on a guided tour. We struck out on our own one day with a private guide in Florence to visit the wineries of Chianti region. Our guide brought us to several wonderful "castles" in this area that are now owned by wine and olive oil merchants. Our most memorable was Castello il Palagio. The wine and olive oil maker, Simone, took us around the estate. It was Beautiful. Up on a hill overlooking the vineyards and olive trees. Simone told us all about their wines and Olive oil production. One of their oils came in 2nd best in all of Italy. If you let them know in advance you are coming, they will let you sample the oils with a nice lunch of cheeses and meats and other delicious goodies, and wonderful wines to match; served up by Simone's wife. A must experience if you are in Chianti.
