Villa il Poggiale Dimora Storica
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 September 2009

I attended a family wedding at the villa in July 2009. The setting, the staff and attention to detail could not have made the experience any better. The villa offers excellent accomodation, delicious local food and a delightful personal touch to everyone it does. There was a fair amount of pressure surrounding the event due to people flying in from all over the world and the obvious desire of the wedding couple that everyone should be happy. Poggiale not only delivered, it exceeded everyone's high expectations.

This is a perfect place for all tuscany lovers and future tuscany lovers. Wonderful view. Great and spacious rooms. Living rooms with antique furniture. Top service. Very good breakfast buffet (for italian standard) - including homemade cakes and fresh fruit. We also had the opportunity to eat breakfast in the lovely park of the villa. And not to miss: the delicious buffet dinner with presentation by the enthusiastic chef himself. Great wines from chianti with reasonable prices (super tuscans plus also a selection from great wineries nearby). We would definitely recommend a stay in this hotel. Be aware, that a car is required in this region.

Our August 27th wedding was held at the Villa il Poggiale, and we could not have chosen a more perfect place. It was truly unforgettable. Each of our guests left the Villa feeling as if they had shared in something very special. We had perfect warm weather, dreamy sunsets, excellent food, superb wines, and special treatment by a wonderful staff. It was the perfect setting.
Il Poggiale is an historic residence, and though it is now run by a hotelier group it still retains much of the charm of a private stately residence with just the right touch of class and charm mixed with a relaxed (not stuffy) feeling. There is nothing of a cookie cutter hotel about the Villa il Poggiale. If you want a relaxing holiday without a stifling staff or snobby guests then this is the place to be. Very Tuscan and very much the character of what Italy had an abundance of 20 years ago. It is nearly gone but Il Poggiale still retains that type of charm and detail. The olive groves, lavender, terraces, perfect swimming pool, and proximity to the town of San Casciano and the Chianti, are just the icing on the cake.
We chose two days of exclusive use for our wedding guests, and the result was that we had the feeling that the villa was our private "home" during the wedding events. The staff is quite present during the day but are off-site at night and leave guests keys to the private gate at the edge of the property. This worked well for my friends and family who quite enjoyed the privacy and the olive groves. As the bride I had the luxury of seeing most of the rooms in the villa. All of the rooms have beautiful furnishings, silks, marble bathrooms, and hand woven throw rugs. Many have traditional brick floors and 18th century fresco decoration. The Superior rooms and Suites are stunning and have either views looking over the Tuscan countryside or small terraces off the inner courtyard. The Standard rooms are much smaller and just as charming but were unfortunately located on the lower floors without views of the property. Some of the smaller Standard rooms are definitely better than others. (If you have the opportunity of staying in a Suite it is absolutely worth every penny!) The real gem was Room 10, the "honeymoon" suite, with luxury furnishings, a private terrace, and a sitting room. My family chose to spend additional days at the Villa prior to the wedding, and stayed in a mini-apartment on the uppermost floor with a very useful kitchen.
I cannot say enough for the wonderful Monica and her staff, the chef Leo who prepared some very delicious meals and a superb wedding banquet, the charming waiter Marcello, and Hana and her lovely sister who made breakfast a pleasure. We used the wedding planning skills of Wedding with a View and Platinum Travel, who work exclusively with the Villa il Poggiale.
I feel very lucky to have had such a memorable experience at this beautiful place. We really look forward to many anniversaries at the Villa il Poggiale!

We discovered Villa il Poggiale in August 2008 when we were looking for a venue for our wedding. Driving through the gates and seeing an Italian Villa with charm and character was enough for us to fall in love with the place.
We met Monica and Anna (they run the Villa with charm, efficiency and friendliness) and they showed us around. Each room is different and they are all furnished in different styles, but all emphasising the character and age of the Villa. If you are looking for a contemporary, minimalist hotel then this is not for you. However, if you are looking for a Tuscan Villa with character, style, charm and fantastic views over the Tuscan countryside then look no further.
We visited several times between Agust '08 and our wedding in July 2009. Anna and Monica were a godsend in helping us organise our Tuscan wedding remotely from the UK. They recommended a florist, photographer, hairstylist, marquee prodvider and even an Italian karaoke group.
We filled the Villa with our guests and had three days of celebrations, culiminating in our wedding on the Saturday. We were looked after superbly and our friends cannot stop talking about the Tuscan Wedding at Villa il Poggiale.
We returned to il Poggiale in September to celebrate a birthday and were not disappointed by the warm welcome and superb hospitality (excellent food and wine).
Villa il Poggiale is perfect for a weekend, a week or for hosting the wedding of your dreams.

What a wonderful place to discover Tuscany from. The villa is located about 20 minutes south of Florence and is a great place to rest before searching out all that is magical about this region. The staff were amazing, the grounds and rooms immaculate and the simple continental breakfast buffet was very good but of limited selection. We really enjoyed the evening supper buffet prepared for the villa guests only. The charming chef would describe in great detail and with love all the foods that he had prepared. It was all incredibly delicious and well priced at 30 euros. If you have a car, this is a wonderful place to enjoy.

The hotel is a beautiful old frescoed villa. All the bedrooms and house sittingrooms are very elegant. It's not too big so there is a feel of intimacy and despite being a very refined hotel, it still has a relaxed an informal atmosphere and is highly suitable for families. There is a lovely pool area. The food is wonderful and the villa stocks a good selection of wine. It is very conveniently located only 25 mins drive from Florence, but still within the heart of Tuscany and is only 5 minutes drive from the local village. Other than the wonderful setting and breath taking views, perhaps the most special quality is the staff who are extremely friendly and go out of their way to help. I would highly recommend this boutique hotel.

We were very excitied about our stay here and couldn't wait to arrive. On arrival we were not disappointed, the front of the property is stunning and the sheltered gardens on the side also looked charming. The staff were kind and we enjoyed some lunch before checking into our room. The grounds were pleasant, but felt very claustrophobic as tall hedges blocked the stunning views of the Tuscan countryside, which is a shame. The pool was very initimate, so you felt very close to everyone there.

The room was on the ground floor, with double doors and a small patio with table and chairs. Unfortunately, this directly faced the main road, which was very busy and noisy (for the area). The room was large, but nothing like the pictures on the website. It was unpleasant to be in, very dark with poor lighting and it smelt very musky and damp. Given that we had a wedding dress and morning suits in our luggage, this was completely unacceptable. A blast of the air conditioning made no difference to this, instead it caused the power to cut out more than five times in the hour that we spent in the room. The table lamp also sparked when I turned it on, which was quite a shock. Whilst the shower was on the kitchen shook, some very stange plumbing going on there. Utterly unacceptable for accomodation of this price range.

We complained to the staff, who were reasonable, though it is very difficult to conduct a phone call to the manager when the electriciy kept cutting out in the hotel! They offered to upgrade us to a different suite, though we had already been upgraded, so I dread to think what the other room would have been like. We refused to have a different room as we were appauled at the state of the room they had given us and had completely lost patience and faith in the hotel. We checked out, to a much cheaper but far far better place (Borgo di Cortefreda, who were fantastic and really helped us out). To make this trip more enfuriating they charged us for the entire stay, 3 nights for us and the 2 extra rooms we had booked for our family on the last night, costing us the best part of 1000 Euros.

It still saddens me to say this, but we were so disappointed and extremely upset by this experience. We will never stay there and would not recommend this in any way, especially given the cost of places in the vicinity can be much cheaper for a much higher standard of accomodation.

We are always so terribly sorry when among the innumerable letters of appreciation we have one like this one.
First of all it is quite true that the nearby road affects a few of our rooms. We know that a new road will be ready in a future, so that most of the traffic will be diverted, let’s keep our finger crossed and hope in a quick burocracy.
You had booked Standards (which contrary to what you imagine are very pretty and have the same furniture and fabrics of Suites and Junior Suites) and were upgraded to a Superior made of a living room one bedroom, which certainly are too near the road and with their frescoed thick walls are not as cheerful as some light and modern building.
Also true it is that at the time there were power surges in the whole area: terribly inconvenient but hardly our fault.
For all these reason and because we were so sad to see you disappointed (you were to get married in a few days!) we repeatedly offered one of our best suites, but nothing could be done to rise your spirit.
We charged you the total amount of Euro 750,00 which is fairly less than the Euro 1000,00 you mention.
Maybe you didn’t realize that of these Euro 750,00 another Euro 150,00 were reimbursed on your credit card .
We deeply regret that your stay was disappointing and we take note of your complaints which are always very useful to improve the Villa standards .

Best regards
