Villa il Poggiale Dimora Storica
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 1 July 2010

I felt as though I had stepped into a movie. Villa il Poggiale is a stunning, fabulously restored Renaissance building. The furnishings are sumptious, the views are the epitomy of Tuscany, the gardens are worthy of great coffee table books on 'gardens of the world'. You really don't need to leave the Villa or its surrounds to have the utlimate Tuscan holiday.

We loved Villa il Poggiale! The Villa is just outside the quaint town of San Casciano, in Chianti, just outside Florence. The grounds are gorgeous. There is a beautiful wellness spa to enjoy after a day of sightseeing - with a lovely outdoor pool overlooking the beautiful Tuscan countryside, and very lovely, peaceful spa indoors with private, serene rooms with sauna, showers and spa treatments, and a jacuzzi. The breakfast was wonderful, served in or outdoors. We had an apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen in the main house, which was perfect for our family of four. Many lovely common rooms for relaxing. Staff could not have been more wonderful and helpful. They recommended daily itineraries, with great restaurants, and gave perfect directions to wherever we were going. We recommend this Villa highly, and can't wait to stay longer the next time we are in Italy. Thanks Villa il Poggiale!

Iniitially I was thinking of renting a villa for our family, but then I thought that it would be a lonely experience and decided on Villa Il Poggiale, all the while being a little worried about sharing a building with other families we did not know. What a fabulous decision!!! The villa was beautiful, clean, service was impeccable, friendly staff, amazing food, very reasonable!!! I truly enjoyed our stay, and we travel quite a bit all over Europe so I think I know a little about what to expect.
I highly recommend this villa and am looking into returning back to it next year, this time with my extended family also!!!

I took my mom to Tuscany to revive her after my father's death. Villa Poggiale did the trick and made her the happiest that I have seen her in years. It is a beautiful villa with gorgeous bedrooms. Also, it has wonderful common rooms and many of them so you do not feel on top of other guests. The grounds are magnificent and there is a wonderful small road to walk on just outside the villa. In addition to the breathtaking vistas, we saw loads of wildlife, including pheasants and deer. The staff are extremely helpful, warm and friendly. I strongly recommend the Villa and hope to return with my husband.

After spending a year in Florence 35 years ago, I was worried I'd built a sandcastle out of memories which could easily be dashed on my first return. Not to worry: the beauty of the Villa confirmed that I hadn't been dreaming -- life truly is beautiful in Tuscany. What a wonderful experience to be guests in a grand home (instead of staying in a hotel). After being warmly welcomed and shown to our spacious suite (love the 15' ceilings, delicately painted walls and 19th century decor!), we had plenty of time to stroll the immaculately maintained grounds and relax with a glass of wine al fresco, taking in the view across the Chianti hills and listening to the songbirds and pheasants in the olive groves. Our first night, we joined other guests in the dining room for a delicious multi-course dinner personally presented by a gregarious chef who must be a favorite "nonno" to several lucky children. Only 14 kilometers from Florence, the villa feels a world away yet close enough for full days in the city, or easy travels throughout the Tuscan hill towns. Want to take a vacation from your vacation? This is a great place to relax all day long, indoors or out (the villa's large salon or the library make perfect places to curl up with a good book). Want to see what is special in the area or find an awesome restaurant? The staff reads your mind, makes the reservations, and gives you detailed directions. Want to get out for a walk or run? Several routes are all set, heading down quiet charming lanes where the occasional farmer looks up from his work to see if he knows you, then shouts "Buon Giorno!" anyway.
I chose Villa il Poggiale for our stay in part because of their association with the Marchesi Antinori family, an historic Florentine winemaking family that cares about preserving, protecting and sharing Tuscan heritage and traditions. The visit was an unforgettable experience for myself, my husband, and my 23-year-old daughter.

If you want to feel at home while you travel through Tuscany, get touring information from the most delighful staff, then this is for you.The villa has large rooms and modern bathrooms. The staff is outstanding. The location is close to Florence and to the heart of Tuscany. We ate in wonderful restaurants that were recommended by the staff and had home cooked meals at night is we so chose. If not very hungary then they made us large bowls of wonderful soup. There are many steps as this is a 14th century country home but easy to navigate. When we left we felt as though we left good friends. My daughter and I had a wonderful experience!!!

Having read the endless good reviews of this hotel on Tripadvisor I was slightly apprehensive of whether it was really going to live up to expectation. It more than did. The villa is spectactular from the outside with stunning views. Inside it is beautifully decorated with large airy rooms, all tastefully decorated. The small number of staff are are extremely friendly and welcoming and unfailingly helpful and will do anything to give advise and help to make your stay more pleasant.

One of the highlights are the dinners, served buffet style, which consist of various cold hors d'oerves, followed by soup and/or pasta, a main course, usually a roast and a choice of dessert or cheese. It is simple with no real choice but well cooked and beautfully and entertainingly presented by the charming chef.

The hotel is run more like a private house party. If , like us, you like the idea of a comfortable and homely base from which to explore the Tuscan countryside, you will find no better. If , however, you are looking for a more conventual hotel with a multitude of staff, then Villa il Poggiale is not for you. However, we personally loved it and any small flaws were more than compensated for by the beauty and homeliness of it and the friendliness of the staff. For us it was perfect and we can't wait to go back.
