“An absolute gem in the back of beyond”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Stumbled across this restaurant by accident. Didn't expect such a fantastic restaurant in such an out of the way location. The food was superb and I was extremely delighted at the choice of wine available to compliment the food. Great ambiance with different groups in the room I was in. There was another group of British tourists as well as local couples and family groups. I recommended the restaurant to some people who were staying in our location and they went the following night and their response was 'superb'.

“Superior”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

Doesn't look much from the outside, and isn't in a scenic location, but food and service both very good. Price very acceptable. Menu is in Italian but waiter (owner ?) was very accomodating and translated with reasonably good grace. I know - what should we expect !! Well worth a visit.

“Hidden wonder”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

There's not a lot of classy places to eat in Vicchio but this is one. Hidden behind the pleasant but modest façade is an extraordinarily series of spacious and modern rooms. Very welcoming, relaxed. Excellent food. Try steak tartare and bistecca Fiorentina. Even the veggie option looked good. The proprietor looks like Heston Blumenthal.

“Great boar and gnudi to boot”
Reviewed 5 January 2013

The strong, simple flavours that dominate Tuscan cuisine go large in the Mugello. The rolling, forested hills hereabouts ensure that boar and venison are a big part of the local offerings--accompanied by uber-hearty treats such as potato tortelli with ragu. It's exactly what you need on a cold winter's night after a long walk. And so, on a foggy evening a few days before Christmas, we were happy to find L'antica Porta di Levante in the heart of Vicchio (about an hour from Florence). This boisterous, welcoming and very well run place, which seems able to accommodate scores of groups and couples with ease, has a vast local menu and even vaster wine list. You'll eat well: we had delicious carre di cinghiale (boar steak) braised in Chianti, gnudi (a type of gnocchi) concocted of pumpkin and ricotta and served with shaved Parmesan and balsamic vinegar, good local salumi and excellent tagliata, accompanied by a smooth supertuscan from that huge list. In the summer there's a terrace, but it's a cosy place in the cold months. We were there till midnight among the revellers and felt completely at home.

“The suprise within......”
Reviewed 27 December 2012

There's alot of seating in this place, but you'd never expect that looking in from the outside. This place changes it's menu every month...which makes sense because of the change of seasons. Their wine menu is vast and very interesting...There is art work everywhere and the service is on point! Simone is a great host! And Christian the Chef aims to please....I had a great time everytime!
