It is rare that a place reccomended by someone can live up to its reputation. But for the first time the build up to my recent stay at the Villa Campestri, not only lived up to but far exceeded our expectations!
An oasis of calm set in the Mugello hills, Pauolo and his family extended their hospitality and along with their team of fantastic staff made us feel immediately welcome. After a few days the mad pace of our everyday city lives gave into the surrounding calm, and we were able to enjoy the sense of encircled space under Campestris sky, we note they use this as a fitting hotel logo; you can totally envelope yourself in what is on offer here which is family hospitality, wonderful facilities and knowledgable and efficient staff.
It is a magnificent house, decorated for comfort with an eclectic mix of furniture and artefacts that add to the sense of being in someone's home.
Huge pots of Rhodedendrums and fantastic pots of lemon and limes ( on the same tree) welcome you into the reception area.Spiralling up the hill initially may not be for the faint hearted, but it wasn't long before it became very automatic.
The food was delicious and the extensive wine list would satisfy all tastes and budgets .This is a place to be educated too, the olive oils gave us a new insight into the benefits and nutritional values of the Mediterranean diet.
The scenery was breathtaking and though the hotel was, justifiably,at full capacity there was never a sense of overcrowding, the feeling of space and calm cannot be over emphasised ,you are enveloped within its circle of sky.
If you are looking for alternatives to the hustle of Florence or the like,if you need to recharge and need to take stock you will definately enjoy the holistic nature of this hotel and I cannot reccomended Campestri too highly.

Room Tip: All the rooms were filled with character we were fortunate to see the magnificent four poster bed in...

We spent six nights at the villa in late September 2012. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to get a free upgrade to a suite. The resort is simply beautiful. The 13th century built main building has great character with all of the modern conveniences. Everyone working at the resort were gracious and accommodating. We tried to book cooking classes when we arrived, but were told that they were full for our entire stay which was disappointing. Recommend that you pre-book if this is something that you're interested in doing. The breakfast included in our stay was very good. It was buffet style with fresh juices (try the orange, carrot, and lemon - wow), coffee, espresso drinks to order, fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, local cured meats and cheeses, fresh baked rolls, cooked bacon/prosciutto and local sausage, and farm fresh eggs available to boil to desired doneness. It was always a great meal to start our day. We ate dinner at the resort three evenings. Quality of our dinners ranged from very good to just ok, but the service was always good and the pricing wasn't bad. Dario in particular provided excellent service. We both got massages in our room which was very good. Didn't try the pool as the weather was not great. It was a good location for exploring the countryside. Very much recommend having a car here. Nearby towns of Vicchio and Dicomano were nice with cafe and dining options. Check out Casa Matta at the Vicchio train station for excellent pizza, pasta or truly huge bistecca alla fiorentia (yum!). Great drives past Dicomano into the mountains thru national parks. We discovered on the morning of our departure that we had a stocked fridge in the room disguised in a beautiful peice of antique furniture. Would have loved to have known it was there as we had white wine that we would like to have chilled and drank. Instead we took on to Rome with us. If we return to Tuscany, we would definitely return to Villa Campestri and we will certainly recommend it to friends and family making the trip.

We had such a good time at the resort during our 4 night stay. It is beautiful and the rooms are spacious and clean. The restaurant has delicious food although a little pricey and great service. We will definitely go back to visit the resort.

My wife, Marie and I recently had the unique pleasure of experiencing Villa Compestri...and an experience it was, full of wonderment, joy and pleasure. Every part of the stay, from the food, to the ambience, to our time with Paolo, Jemma and the staff, was wonderful. We spent 3 weeks in Italy traveling the countyside, this was by far, the best of our time! Staff is warm and welcoming, accommodations are like heaven, and the food was the best on our trip. If you want to experience true Italy, you must spend time here!! Thank you Paolo, Jemma and all for making it so wonderful.

Feel like I am a guest in my friend's big house overlooking the valley (no, they are not my friends; but make me fee like); I love-it and will be back soon. Oh! and the food and service is unbelievable; you don't feel like going out for dinner!
Take a breath, look over the valley, walk in the middle of the Olive trees and be happy.

We chose the Villa from reading about them in a book called Go Slow Italy, Special Local Places to Eat, Stay & Savor and as well as reading all the great reviews on tripadvisor.

Our room was more than what we expected, it was very spacious, clean and peaceful.

The buffet breakfast offered you many choices of pastries, fresh fruits, sausages, bacon, sliced meats, buns, cheese, cereal, yogurt. There is also a soft boiled egg maker for you to make your own egg to your liking or you can request for other style of eggs made to order.
My husband enjoyed using the orange juicer provided to squeeze fresh juice for us each morning.
A few mornings when the warm sun was out we had our breakfast on the terrace where you can enjoy the picturesque view of the tuscan hills.

We had dinner 4 nights out of our 7 nights at the Villa and each time the service and food was excellent. Before our dinner we were always offered amuse- bouche( small appetizePr) which was delicious. Dario the waiter and the rest of the staff were always polite and courteous.

The receptionist staff was always helpful whenever we had any questions regarding directions to
our destinations for the day and as well as suggesting and making reservations for dinner at other
restaurants in the area . Due to our early checkout and breakfast was not available yet
the receptionist offered to provide us coffee or tea to help us start our long journey home.

The location of the Villa is close to other major destinations, we were able to drive to Pisa, San Gimignano, Volterra, Florence,Pisa,Maranello ( Ferrari museum) and Cinque Terre to visit for the day.

The roads around the Villa do not have much traffic so hiking and biking is very peaceful.

Our overall stay at Villa Campestri was very memorable and will definitely come back again.

.

from the staff and best of all you can make yourself a fresh glass of orange juice

If you appreciate loud classical Chopin's piano concerts during breakfast, lunch & diner, then you must stay here! If you prefer a warm Mediterranean atmosphere avoid this place and read my review.

We booked this hotel for 5 nights, but decided to leave after 2 nights. Let me tell you why.

The arrival was good. I always appreciate when the host is shaking hands on arrival. So was here. The receptionist introduced herself and shook hands with us upon arrival. We were lucky because we were offered a free upgrade to a junior suite. So far, so good.

During diner we ordered Chianti wine from the wine list and to my surprise the waiter brought us a bottle which was already opened. I expressed my surprised reaction because it is actually normal that an ordered bottle is opened in the presence of the guest. I asked the waiter if there was any specific reason why he brought us an already opened bottle. The reaction was "I just opened it just a few minutes ago" and with an irritated attitude he pored the wine into the glasses and left the table.

In the morning, we experienced the good quality of the breakfast. However, I noticed the loud classical music that played an annoying piano concert. During lunch, all guests were disappeared. Although the hotel is serving lunch, there is no warm welcoming atmosphere that invites quests to go for lunch: the tables are not prepared and we did not feel invited by the lady that served lunch. And again: the loud classical piano concerts. Sometimes it felt like that the hotel is playing some auto-reloop classical CD without being aware that it must changed sometimes to create a warm Mediterranean atmosphere (e.g. Buena Vista Social Club, Cesaria Evora).

We decided not to have lunch or diner anymore in the hotel. Instead, we found some nice places in the area (like Ristorante L'antica Porta di Levante). We informed the reception about our personal opinion about the classical music and invited the receptionist to think about some alternative music. Politely, the receptionist informed us that we this classical music is the best music to create the warm and relaxing atmosphere. She even gets compliments about it!

We decided not to stay any longer here despite our 5 night reservation and to look for a warm atmosphere hotel and area, which we found in Fiesole.

Dear 276aleX,
when Tatiana asked you after 3 nights you were with us - not 2 as you wrote - if there were any problems the answer you gave her was that you were leaving because there is not much to do here. We have to admit, this is the first time we've heard this complaint. Our website and our blog is constantly updated on the activities to do. There are no lies on it or in any of our descriptions. We work transparently. Here it is the list of the activities you can choose while staying at Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort (at the Reception we have many informative leaflets on all the activities at the Resort and in the Mugello area): truffle hunting with the truffle hunter and his dog, an unique experience to be in touch with the glorious nature surrounding our Resort; mountain bike trails with our free mountain bikes; nature trails in our private park of 120 hectares; olive oil tasting with an expertise entered in the national list of tasters (much like an educational then an olive oil tasting with lots of technical and strategic informations); extra-virgin olive oil massages - nice list of treatments - with an excellent price for the quality and the location of the treatments; cookery courses - 6 different courses - with our Award-Winner Chef Roberto Zanieri; painting courses learning the Renaissance techniques of painting. In the area, artisanal wine cellars for amazing wine tastings, splendid cheese makers, Museums of Renaissance Art and the glorious Florence just 39 minutes by train or 45 minutes by car. It's hard to believe that you left because there is not much to do here. I simply believe that Villa Campestri was not the right place for you but this is not our fault. You have been asked to pay the total amount of your stay and the review pop up magically. This is not fair. There are constructive, spontaneous, serious reviews from guests that really help growing our service and learning from our mistakes but we do not think it is fair to give misleading informations to other readers transforming a non-issue complaint (the story of the loud classical music, of the wine, of the cold atmosphere is pathetic and offensive) into really bad disappointment.
We work with our Maitre Dario Bogani for so many years and we trust him when he says that what you wrote is not correct. He opened the bottle in the main room where there is a small special table for wine tasting called "gueridon" a few minutes before serving it to oxygenate the wine since you chose a Chianti Classico La Pieve 2007. Our maitre open and taste every single bottle before serving it. This is a well known practice in every up-level Restaurant in order not to ruin your mouth with a bad cork defect. Also the maitre needs to check a second hidden potential defect called "vino spoglio" - empty wine. It is the way to do it. Dario offered to open a new bottle and your answer was "It's not necessary". It's not true that Dario was irritated, he was just uncomfortable for the situation that you created in the Restaurant and that never happened before. We are not here to cheat our guests. We are open since 1991, it's 21 years of activity, what do you think that we give our guests opened refilled bottles of wine? We are a very well known Restaurant all over the world and your insinuations do not touch us. We are replying to you only because of other readers using TripAdvisor with consciousness.
