“Beautiful views”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

We stayed here in early May and were lucky enough to have excellent weather - thus we made good use of the large, clean outdoor pool. There is also an indoor pool which is well used sling with gym facilities.
The hotel is set on a cliff edge but with plenty of places to sunbathe with sheltered areas in the garden. No shortage of sun beds and permanent shades.
I took part in an excellent Pilates class which was held in a secluded part of the gardens but with a lovely breeze to keep us cool. The tutor spoke many languages so no-one missed the instructions.
Would suggest that you go for a room on a higher floor (ours was 7th) and we had superb views. Our superior twin had a lounge with large balcony plus bedroom also with balcony and a large walk-in dressing room and separate bathroom.
We stayed on Bed & Breakfast basis - good selection of hot and cold food and discreet, attentive dining room staff. We ate in the hotel in one evening - hot and cold buffet with a good selection of food to suit all tastes.
The hotel had two evenings with entertainment in the bar - one of the entertainers (a saxophone player ) was excellent - he made great efforts to get everyone dancing & playing music to suit each country represented. Everyone really enjoyed this evening. Other night with keyboard was not so good.
All staff from reception to bar and waiting & maid service were very polite & helpful.
We hired a car and would recommend this if you want to see area. We needed ours for golf outings although there is a local bus.
Would return here again - peaceful but very pleasant break.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views.

Sat on the sixth floor with an ocean view - one of the best hotels from RCI in Europe for pure panoramic views.

Negatives: The hotel is dated with tired looking furniture. The bed is like sleeping on an iron board.

Cleaning isn't quite upto spec with squashed flies still on our windows, but the maids empty the bin daily and are polite.

Gym is basic but functional.

Entertainment in the hotel bar at night is sparse.

€50 fee for facilities.

Positives: Suberb location with four local almost deserted beaches within a stones throw.

Great pool, sauna & steam room.

Family friendly sunbathing facilities.

I cannot comment on are the food (either went out to local restaurants or cooked on the balcony) but in general it was €24 each for a buffet in the evening.

Great place and I would definitely return in two years time.

Hotel is fine, nothing to write home about but clean and staff are friendly. Some good deals to be found online. Breakfast is a buffet (they could heat the plates for hot food!). Internet access (if you have a computer/phone) has to be paid for in advance although there are two pcs in the lobby free to use. The beach is really close and through a tunnel you can get to another fantastic beach. Probably need a car to stay at this hotel unless you're going to sit on the beach all day. The area around is fine except there are some unfinished buildings, I'm guessing due to recession. Food shops are within walking distance. Some restaurants nearby are worth a visit as are those in the nearby armacao de pera (the indian just near the town entrance is nice). I was there at end of October and again at Easter when it was quiet but it might get a bit busy over the summer.

Room Tip: The sea view is fine but its not quite overlooking the sea as there is a garden in the way.

Writing this review from a baby-friendly point of view for families travelling with little ones. We travelled with a 10-month old at the end of April 2014.

We stayed for a week in apartment 623 (1-bed), which was on the top floor in the hotel complex, and right on the end with amazing views over the hotel pool, headland and sea. Bedroom was spacious with a large ensuite and ample storage with two cupboards. The lounge/kitchen area was also roomy, with a sofa (bed) and two armchairs, coffee table, chest of drawers, large TV. Kitchen area had a table and chairs for four, a small but well stocked kitchenette (microwave, toaster, blender, coffee maker, pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, glassware, sink and hob). There was also a separate toilet. Large balcony with dual aspect views. We asked for a cot, and had a large metal (on wheels) one delivered! It was a bit too large to fit in the bedroom, and squeaked when moved. But baby was very happy and slept well in there.

The hotel is in an enviable position with stunning views. Our room was very modern, clean and no complaints. The hotel is a bit tired in parts, but kept clean and well maintained. Staff were all very nice and helpful.

The pool area is accessed in the lift (or stairs) two floors down from reception. There are then a few stairs from the lift area to the dining area / access to outdoors. We carried the pushchair down most times, but there is a small wheelchair lift for that purpose.

There are two adjacent outdoor pools - for adults and children respectively. They are not heated and very cold! There is a good-sized indoor pool which we used lots. Plenty of loungers round the indoor pool, but no shallow / baby area. The pool was well used by children and families during our stay. There is a small changing room, and lockers. n.b no changing mat facility. We just changed baby by the pool. There is a changing mat in the ladies toilets close to the restaurant/bar. Sauna and jacuzzi for the grown ups.

There is a kids club that was open 9-5 during our stay, but only supervised in the mornings, with activities such as painting and crafts. There are toys, books and games for all ages. A nice bright airy room. Very lovely lady who runs it - makes a fuss of everyone. We used the facility a few times - baby enjoyed playing.

The pool area has a bistro bar open during good weather. We ate lunch here twice, wasn't cheap, but reasonable and food was good. Staff very accommodating of baby and supplied high chair. There is also a small plastic playground by the children's pool and table tennis for older ones. the sun-loungers are all on the grassed area which we enjoyed as baby could crawl happily by us (we even built a pen with spare loungers as it wasn't busy when we stayed). They have fixed parasols.

We had breakfast at the hotel on our first morning and although the selection was wide, we didn't think it was great quality. Didn't inspire us to stay for evening meals - a daily changing buffet at EUR 24. But it is very family friendly. I heard from others there is a disco etc in the evening at the bar, but we didn't go.

There are several good restaurants located in easy walking distance of the hotel. The nearest is a decent snack bar called Las Palmeiras. Just a few hundred meters away, close to the hotel's Porches Praia apartments is a lovely italian, Belmondo. Stunning setting by a pool with outdoor dining terrace. Great menu - pizza and pasta to exquisite fish dishes. They also do takeaway which is a great alternative if you don't want to go out. We also recommend the restaurant on the beach - excellent seafood, caught fresh by the fishermen right next door. They also have a snack bar. We ate out locally every night bar one. Everywhere was accommodating of the pushchair / provided high chairs and kids meal options at lunch.

The little beach/bay to the right of the hotel is perfect - lovely setting, and all the facilities you could need to hand. Short walk from the hotel. We were able to get right onto the beach with the pushchair.

There are two small mini-markets on the road from the hotel to the main road. We opted to walk the extra distance (10-15 mins) to the larger supermarket which had a great range for all your self-catering needs, including baby products and foods.

One day we needed a pharmacy and walked into the nearest large town, Armacao de Pera. This took about 35 mins (all up hill on the way back). The hotel provides a complimentary twice daily shuttle there too.

All in all, we had an enjoyable stay and felt the hotel and local facilities catered well to our needs with a little one in tow. The Portuguese are very family-oriented and make a fuss of babies / children :)

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view and opt for the top floor!

We have stayed in this hotel many times in the past and previously would have given it the full 5 green ring rating. This time, although we had booked directly with the hotel some time ago and requested two twin/double superior rooms on a high floor, we were told on arrival we had been upgraded to suites. My heart always sinks when the word "suites" crops up as this usually means family rooms. Well, we accepted as the "suites" as the rooms we had requested were apparently fully booked up. Anyway, on first impressions the suites were fine but a little battered around the bedroom walls, but first thing we really noticed was the heat!! The bathroom was nice enough with everything provided. The twin beds were fine but the linen was getting a bit worn and dull. Although this was classed as sea view, you also got a better view of the air con units and a disused courtyard that desperately needed attention. The big problem for us was that the air conditioning was virtually non-existent in our two rooms and with the weather being particularly hot we were unable to sleep. Even opening the window didn't make a difference. Goodness knows what it would be like in the height of summer. Yes, we did complain after an unbearable first night but was told the hotel was full. We asked to be moved on the second day and was shown two similar suites but these weren't much cooler and they also were over the restaurant/dining room/bar so might have had the added problem of noise. We was told that there was a problem with the air con on certain floors but then a second member of staff said there wasn't - who knows?? If we had had the rooms that we had originally asked for we would have been more than happy but having not slept for four nights it was not ideal by any standard. The breakfast was fine. Very disappointed with the spa and pool - it definitely needs attention. The water in the spa pool was freezing cold and none of the waterfalls were working. In fact, the outside pool water was warmer, but even that was quite cold. The hotel arrangements for pool towels was a strange one - you get your towels by handing in an allocated card, they take the card and then it is returned when you return the towels. Failure to return the towels results in a charge. This procedure is left to the Spa staff and if there is no one there when you want to return towels (as is the case when the Spa staff are working on treatments), what do you do? One man had been waiting for 30 mins to return towels! This needs to be organised better. The occasional evening entertainment was pretty dull and very much stuck in the 70s. The entertainers tried their best and were good at their skills but so, so outdated. This hotel is in a beautiful position and has super gardens, extremely friendly, obliging, staff but the heat in the rooms unfortunately spoiled it for us this time round.

Stayed at the Pestana for 1 week across Easter weekend. Having never been to this area previously and now with a little one in tow I accepted an invitation to stay for a week.
The hotel was easy to find from the airport and took about 45mins using the toll road (not sure how long it would take on the old road but at a guess probably double if busy). The approach down to the hill opens up the hotel and it's magnificent setting. On a cliff top overlooking the sea with a short stroll down to a sheltered beach.
The hotel staff were pleasant although did threaten to charge me 15 euro/night for a cot which I was not going to accept in a 4* hotel having previously noted them of my requirements. The domestic staff were always polite as were all others I encountered.
The hotel has all facilities needed including indoor heated pool (suitable for 10 month baby), outdoor pool with child pool (I tried neither as a bit nippy), small token gym (usable but basic), jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, children's room, and spa (a little pricy). I was self catering so did not try hotel food but restaurants looked pleasant enough. I prefer to either go out or else provide own breakfast in comfort of room.
The room itself was fine with fantastic views over the pools and sea (6th floor). I guess the only gripe would be the slightly dated technology in the room and the smell of the drains in the shower room adjacent to lounge area. This could however just be unique to my room (635) and should have mentioned it to front desk but just never got round to it. The small kitchenette, which although basic, was adequate.
I would recommend this hotel for a relaxing stay cation as it was very quiet and family orientated although would also be fine for a couple wanting some quiet time (obviously talking about this time of year, no doubt summer is manic).
There are plenty of restaurants in the nearby village/town which we ventured to most evenings but did drive as just beyond comfortable walking distance. I would certainly recommend a car if planning to go slightly further afield than 15/20 mins walk.
