This hotel is in a great location and the receptionist was not exaggerating when he said we had the best room in the place. It had a sea view and a large, shady balcony. The hotel also has its own big garden – very pleasant and cool with a swimming pool and private entrance to the beach.

That´s the good part. The bad parts were: (i) it only had three parking places despite being a four-star hotel with around 60 rooms, and we had to drive around to find a place every time we came back from a drive; (ii)during the four days we were there, the only lift was out of order most of the time, this in a hotel with five floors; (iii) the breakfast service was spoiled by the fact that the coffee was dispensed from a machine and was not fresh; and (iv) I was irritated at having to pay a deposit of 26 Euros in cash for a safe key even though the hotel had all the details of my credit card when I booked several months previously.

The Oriental is situated in the midst of the industrialized tourist development of the Praia da Rocha area which is virtually a separate part of Portimão. This means that quite a lot of the visitors are on package holidays, confirmed by the HP sauce and baked beans available at the hotel and the English pubs and copies of The Sun on sale in nearby shops.

If you don´t care for this kind of atmosphere, my advice is to find a quieter spot on the Algarve.

the room was lovely an spacious and very clean, pool was nice and right on the beach. only thing was there was no entertainment or music. but it was fine because there was plenty 2 min walk away from us. overall a brilliant hotel, will definatly be staying there again.

Although a poor 4 star (well worn in places), I would recommend the hotel itself, but I would strongly advise anybody with mobilty problems to steer well clear of both this hotel and Praia da Rocha as a holdiay destination. The hotel reception area has no direct access to lifts without steps. The beach, wonderful as it is, is not accessible from anywhere along the 'front' without having to descend and later, ascend, anything between 60 and 100 steps.
NB Parking is also severely restricted to three spaces (for an 85 room hotel!) after a recent street 'makeover', so a hire car, with or without own 'blue badge' is not a good solution.

A comfortable hotel with friendly & helpful staff at reception. Very accommodating for mobility scooter. Great location right above a fantastic beach. 5-10 minutes walk from town centre but small shops just across the road and good restaurants on the beach below - the Senhora da Rocha is very friendly and has good food.

Rooms spacious, quiet & clean, but cockroaches seen on a few occasions. Breakfast good though not spectacular. Don't bother with evening meals - the food is fine but you'll do much better elsewhere, the staff weren't interested and there's no atmosphere.

We arrived early and were allowed into our room before standard check in-our original room had twin beds pushed together and was next to a generator which seemed noisy so we were moved to another room which was much nicer-every room has a sea view-you need to specify FRONT sea view and would recommend opting for a high floor level. Although we were on the 4th floor, with stunning views-the local seagulls decided to move in on the roof and feed their young fish they had caught which was the most vile smell in the heat and very noisy! Rooms were nice.

Staff were OK-not particularly friendly bar a couple.

The location is perfect in the Algarve, 58 steps down to a long stretches of white sand, crystal clear water, clear blue skies-very clean.

Dont waste your money going half board-food is vile-the cheapest, poorest quality and most vile combinations. No good for vegetarians. We paid to go half board and ended up eating out every night-the waiter admitted all the food is frozen and all cooked before service starts at 6.30pm to enable a quick turnaround-it was inedible.

Turn right out the hotel and walk towards the castle, down some steps and you'll find the most stunning private beach and pool complexes-free entry-Agua Pool and Agua Beach-we sunbathed on four poster double sun beds dressed with white mattresses and cushions overlooking the sea, stunning salt water swimming pool-great food and breath-taking views. Opposite are a variety of restaurants along the marina-with great views-highly recommend RITUAL D'ALTOMAR (next to pizza hut)-the most friendly couple and most fantastic cooks-my partner was amazed by the shrimps and they kindly made me a fresh vegetable stir-fry seasoned to perfection!

There is a surf school, watersports, pool table, fabulous ice-cream parlour, beautiful sunset walks, shops opposite hotel...

Worth visiting Lagos-we got a train from Portimao and visited a church made of gold, bougt some lovely gifts from the slave market, ate in a fantastic Italian restaurant, stunning marina0great day out!

Basically the location and what was around made the holiday for us-we didnt really use the hotel or its facilities-not great for families-perfect for couples wanting a quieter get-away. Hotel was OK but would choose to stay in the Casino next door if I had my time again! Would have liked a gym. Pool was OK-not great. Room service was only available at limited times. Internet access available in reception for a fee.

The hotel needs some maintenance and modernisation-only rate it a 3 star. They dont make most of the views-hedges need to be cut right down to enable guests to enjoy the view, breakfast room should be structured better to enable more tables to enjoy a view rather than occupying half the room with a bar no-one uses-open the french windows to enjoy the breeze, stairway down to beach needs to be cleared up and bushes cut back.

Stayed in this hotel last September and loved it, so decided to go back this August. However, came up against a few more problems this year! Was given room no 18 which looks out over the garden...and little did we know was below the cafe/bar. Got no sleep at all with the noise from the cafe at night - chairs scraping across the floor, bottles being emptied, noisy footsteps on the steps going into the toilet... Also, Sasha beach party was on when we were there, and the noise was deafening, until about 6am!!! Complained about the cafe noise above us and got moved to a much nicer room.

If you have booked a double bed, dont be surprised if you get two twin beds pushed together. The hotel only seem to have about 6 doubles. This proved a problem as the gap in the middle was not the most comfortable!!!

Breakfast ok...not great...but edible. Toast, fruit (although tinned pineapple?!) yoghurt, egg, orange juice, tea etc. Loungers easy to get around garden side, pool loungers a bit harder to get.

Weather was fantastic, sometimes too warm!!! But compared to last September, beach was A LOT more overcrowded this time round, so opted to lie around hotel garden instead.

Don't go shopping to the shopping centre in Portimao. It's more like a supermarket, not very many other shops. Apparently shopping in Guia is very good, but was around 45 euros each way in a taxi so didnt go.

With regards to eating, theres lots to choose from. A Casa Da Rocha, situated near the very top of the town, does a lovely chicken peri peri and should not be missed. Lovely wee irish bar up the town too which does great food, and staff are very friendly!

We stayed at this hotel from July 26th to August 2nd, we travelled as a family of four my mum, myself and hubby with our two year old. All the staff we met were extremly polite and friendly. The chambermaids were excellent (even placed my sons teddy bear next to his pillow - a really nice touch I thought) My mum had her own room and was delighted with it. Well appointed kitchenette with fridge, it also had boil on the hob kettle and corkscrew (corkscrew found after we bought one)! No coffee or tea supplied in room, we bought in the resort. The hotel does not look like the bland crown plaza/marriott that we may be used to seeing, but I felt it was worthy of it's four stars and is a hotel with character and old fashined charm. Breakfast was lovely, just what I expected from a european hotel. Cereal, selection of juices, bread/cake, yoghurts, fruit and rotated days between scrambled egg/boiled eggs & small cocktail sausages (delicious) to beans, tomatoes, sauasges, eggs. There were plenty of sunbeds available in the garden, around the pool sunbeds were snapped up. The hotel has a policy of removing towels off sunbeds if they seem to have been reserved, we did not see much evidence of this being enforced but we didn't find it a major problem but were informed by rep that hotel was quiet for time of year. The hotel pool was cold, but once you were in it was ok ! Had a baby pool 60cms deep and a bigger pool depth from 1.20m to over 2.0m. A small playground under a large palm tree, with swing, rocking horse and small climbing frame with swing. The Sasha Sessions beach club had just started (every night from 1st Aug to end of Aug) A very loud fireworks display at 1.45am, my son slept through it - thankfully, loud but stunning !!! We generally slept with the air-con on and doors & windows shut and could only just about hear the disco. The beach is approx 57 steps down form the hotel, quite steep, we managed fine with the usual beach bags/parasols and 2 year old. The beach is lovely, two sunbeds and parasol cost us 10 euros for the day. We bought parasols in a small back street, which cost us approx 15 euros for two. I can certainly recommend the Oriental Cocktail in the hotel bar, the cocktail guy came 2nd in a world cocktail competition in the 80's and his cocktails were lovely. We didn't eat in hotel of an evening as we travelled on a B&B basis, and liked to eat out of an evening, we did have some snacks at lunchtime in the hotel occasionally, and although it was a little pricey the food tasted great. Although we don't like to visit the same resort twice, if asked, I would go back to this hotel.
