“A home away from home!!”
Reviewed 20 August 2010

I travelled as a single mother and business woman of 34 with my 16 year old daughter and her 16 year old friend, we travelled to Plaza Real fearing the worst dissapointment as we had just returned from a 5* spa & golfing hotel in Marbella and we were expecting this 3* establishment to be significantly below standards as it was booked only 2 weeks before departure costing a mere £2000 for a one week stay in a two bedroom apartment, for both me and my daughter! Amazing value for money, as we drove into the complex we were feeling rather disheartened by the hotels exterior, our fears only grew worse as we entered the reception area, however after checking in via the highly friendly recption staff we went to our assigned room D217, upon opening the door an angled marble staircase leading up o two spacious double bedrooms, an oversized bathroom with two showers with his and her's sinks and two balconies appeared, downstairs was an equipped kitchen, a large entrance hall, a downstairs WC/cloakroom, a large broom cupboard under the stairs which we transformed into swimming pool inflatables storage, a large louge diner combi with a large balcony, air-con units were in almost every room and only 15 euros for the whole week! Now that is VALUE for money!

The beach was gorgeous! And the nearby Marina of Portimao was stunning, and a lovely place to eat.

Car hire was also very cheap!!

However despite my daughter and her friends presence I was away on business and for the day that I had to drive all the way into Lisbon for a meeting, I had to leave my daughter, and her friend around the hotel, they made great use of the local shopping complex which contained many home brands such as Mango, Zara and Lacoste, the hotel staff were more than willing to keep them in safe hands in the time they were around the hotel, as was the lovely Thomson holiday representitive Claire!!

The staff were fantastic, as were the surroundings, the weather and the beach, a real eye opener from the usual kind of business trip, I would definately do it again!!

We arrived at the Plaza Real Apart-hotel towards the end of July just as the school's broke up, so the apartments were beginning to get busy.
On the first day, we encountered a few problems with our apartment; One of the air conditioning units was broken, the sofa bed also broke when we sat on it, we had a leaky shower head and the balcony chairs were unbalanced and rickety. We reported these problems quickly and were shocked when a maintenance man turned up to repair everything 5 minutes later. We were very impressed and didn't experience any further problems. We were also impressed by the maid service, it was a relief especially when you get back from the beach and you realise you've brought half of the beach back with you.

The kitchen was well-equipped with everything you need to cook a proper meal, however it did lack in the number of glasses and plates. The oven isn't fan assisted and sometimes creates smoke which can set off the fire alarms. There is another problem with the hobs too. You must not turn the hobs any higher than a 4 otherwise it trips the electricity for the whole apartment. The bathroom is large and clean, but be careful when using the shower, because the bath and the floor are quite slippery. Other than that, it is very comfortable and spacious.

The swimming pool is okay, but if you want to do proper swimming or you dislike children I wouldn't recommend this. There are no lifeguards at the pool and children often break the rules which are clearly stated at the pool entrance. Before the pool is even opened, towels are on every available sun lounger so you need to get to the pool early.

The bar offers a good range of cocktails, milkshakes and other alcoholic drinks. We didn't have a chance to try the food on offer, but from what we saw it was pretty limited menu anyway. However, with Praia da Rocha beach only a 15 minute walk away there are plenty of other local restaurants and bars to try there.

There was evening entertainment 3 times a week. On Tuesdays and Fridays there is karaoke in the bar, which we tried many times and it is done really well with big screens etc. On Fridays they have a weekly parrot show, which is very funny but they do try to get lots of money out of you through pictures with the parrots. Then on Sundays there is a kids' disco.

The location of the hotel was very good. You are close enough to the beach if you wanted to walk there regularly, but you are also far enough to be away from the hustle and bustle of the beach promenade. The hotel's surroundings are very quiet and peaceful. The nearest supermarket is about 15 minutes walk away, which makes travelling back with lots of shopping very hard work in the heat. It is best to get a taxi from the bay outside to the hotel and it is only costs about 3 or 4 euros - so not too expensive.

Overall we had a very enjoyable holiday. If you are travelling with Thomson, Claire the hotel rep, is very friendly and is always willing to give advice and help. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for couples, I think it is more aimed at families.

The apartments are spacious, I travelled with my children 18,16 & 10 yrs, we had plenty of space. Apartments cleaned, beds made and change of towels most days. Not much evening entertainment but swimming pool closes at 8pm there is a pool table and a few arcade games. The electric went off when I told the receptionist she said 'that happens, just flick the trip switch back'. However the holiday rep Claire was very helpful and said it usually happens and advised the cooker be put on at a lower temp.(the only grumble)
Plenty of places to eat in the main resort which is about 15 min walk. we had a three course meal at a resturant for 7 euros! so didn't find eating out to expensive. The beach is wonderful, lots of steps though. Supplies Continente (We bought a parasol from here -1 euro it wasn't special but ideal for the days on the beach). - plenty of taxis in car park, save carrying shopping back up hill! Aquashow Excursion well worth going, half day boat trip was just right, if taking children.Overall had a lovely holiday.

First impressions were good; the hotel seemed to be nice from the outside and as we approached the swimming pool area it looked better than I thought.

The apartment was spacious and I cannot really fault anything about it, it was spotlessly clean as were the plates, pans, cooker etc, and had pretty much all we needed.

Reception was OK a bit frosty at times, but TBH we only had to report a dodgy blind twice which was fixed the same day.

Air con was provided in the living area and bedroom for 10 euros with a 10 euro deposit, it was damn hot so money well spent a further 10 euros with a 10 euro deposit for the lock on the safety deposit box also.

The swimming pool was a bit small but ok, people “booked” sun beds with their towels in the morning which is a bit ungracious in this day and age.

I visited the bar for the welcome meeting and paid 5.50 euros for a coke and an orange that was the first and last time I went there.

The hotel is child friendly and I felt a bit sorry for the adult as they were a bit of a captive audience for the hotel and the bar. The kids were on the hole all well behaved and did not cause any problems.

The location is about 15 mins walk from the beach/front/bar area, or about 4 – 5 Euros in a cab. Also about 15 mins walk from the Lidl and Continente supermarkets with taxis costing the same, although one driver added 2.40 euros on the bill as we used the boot!!!

The little supermarket around from the hotel is VERY PRICEY so beware, she gets food from the Continente super market and re prices in the shop, a 1 euro pack of ham she sells for 3 euros, as she does for everything else.

Watch the prices on the front, one bar offers a pint of beer for 1 euro, others 2 euros others 3.5 euros. We went to one supermarket on the front for a loaf and they tried to charge us 3.95 euros, the same loaf in lidl the following day was 60 cents!!

The resort is nice and we did not venture to the beaches but they did look nice also.

As for eating out, we had a couple of nice meals from where I can’t recall, a steak in the Hollywood steak house was pretty rubbish really.

WORST part of the holiday was a restaurant called something like Clemetine, celementre or something similar in the middle of the strip upstairs opposite the police station.
DO NOT GO HERE!!!
I ordered a steak schnitzel which was clearly chicken, although my wife thought it to be pork, I asked for a replacement or for the bill to be adjusted to reflect it was not steak, the manager was a right rude, ignorant person, and said I got what I ordered and he didn’t even look at it, to cut a long story short I said I was not happy with the meal or the service, and I would pay for the 2 drinks we had and leave.
He was not happy and called the police who told him to stop being a shall we say idiot and to give us a bill for the drinks and let us leave they were not happy with him, but were totally fine with us.
AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!

We went to Lagos on a train from Portimao which was an OK half day out, go on the Noddy train by the station for 2.5 Euros for a 45 min trip, you’ll look silly but it’s a nice trip.

We also brought a trip to the Gypsy Market in some place, DO NOT bother the market sells clothes which make Primark clothes look good, and the shops all sell linen table cloths, women’s clothes and pottery, it is not a man trip, let your wife go but stay away it’s the most boring place I have been to.

Just back from a brilliant time at these apartments. Our kids (11 & an energetic 3 yr old) had a great time at the kids club, Emma & Sam were amazing and our kids loved them!!! The apartment itself was so spacious, upstairs with 2 bedrooms, a kitchen where you had everything you needed to cook, great!! Staff were more than helpfull, can't recommend this place enough!! We used the shortcut as it does cut the journey by half to the main shops and restaurants, though it was a bit awkward with a pram! Lidl and continente supermarket are only 15 min away, worth it to stock up on water and icepops etc!!! Will definately be back at these apartments!!!

Apartment was very spacious, kept clean by the staff, was very well equipped for self catering - the ONLY thing missing is little bits like washing up liquid etc to clean up.
The staff were very helpful all week, right from arrival, nothing was too much trouble, a couple of minor issues which required maintenance were dealt with staright away.
Enjoyed the location, the pool area is plenty big enough. The pool is cool but still great fun.
Food around the resort was superb all week - do try restaurants (JU - on the front and the portugese one opposite JU). Squash (a little bit further along the strip is excellent too)

The Thomsons reps were excellent all week (thanks Katy, Lucy). They were always available, always helpful, put on a few things in and around the hotel which were fun.
Kids club didn't affect us, but you can tell it was excellent from the reaction of all the children.

The bar was good value, again the staff excellent, the club sald is an excellent lunch.

Trips - we did the off road safari (land rover into the Monchique hills) and it was an excellent day - highly recommended.

DO - Eat the oranges - they are marvellous

The path down to the beach is a little uneven and dusty, but easily negotiated. It is only a few minutes longer to take the road way and that is well lit and no problem at all.

Beaches are lovely.

Alvor is well worh a visit, as is Lagos.
lagos is under 3 euros on the train from Portimao and is easy to do.
If you do go to Lagos take the 45 minutes motor boat cruise - they take you in and through the rock formations and caves - its wonderful - 10 euros each.

we had a week in Praia Da Rocha - it was a super break.

Would I go back - yes
Would I use Plaza Real - yes
Did I get value for money - yes

Enjoy - hope the review helps

We stayed from May 2nd-9th. We booked this hotel as it was such a bargain at the travel agents. We travelled with our 17month old son and with friends who also have a 17 month old.
The apartments are massive (we had a 2 bed two storey one Room 117). It had two very good size bedrooms both with balconies, a huge bathroom, great large lounge diner with a big terrace and well fitted kitchen which also had a table in it. The apartment was very well equipped my only critisism was that as other reviewers have said the floor was filthy, our feet were black literally as soon as we took our shoes off.
The pool is ok, not massive but in our opinion there are plenty of sunbeds and parasols and the sunbeds have cushions too which is good. The bar is great, food is good but expensive!
Don't use the little supermarket near the hotel the lady is friendly but again this is pricey! Continente is great, a good 15 min walk but worth it when you get there and as someone else said get a taxi back it cost us 3.50 to get to the hotel.
The hotels location is not the best but there is shortcut if you leave the hotel turn left and walk to the end of that road and across the building site (not great for buggies!) its only rough for about 30 metres but it takes you to a street that if you keep walking up it takes you to the Esplanade. I wouldn't advise walking it in the dark though.

Zoomarine trip is ok, but be aware that the large water flumes on site and the rapids have closed down never to reopen apparently! Dolphin show and sealion show are very good.
On the whole this is agood value hotel in an ok location. Would we go back??? Yes definatly!
