We stayed here July 2008 and found the Hotel in a great location only yards from the strip but none of the noise, the rooms are good basic bedrooms with TV,A/C (but ours did not cool very much )and a safe, our room was spotless and cleaned every day, fresh towels too. The breakfast was a bit basic and the same every day but is OK (fresh fruit and maybe some yoghourt would be nice ). All in all we had a very pleasant stay and would not hesitate to recommend or use this Hotel in the future.

Stayed here in March for a much needed break.

Apart from having to wait for well over an hour for our lift to the hotel (which was not their fault) we had a great time.

The location of the hotel is excellent. It's 100yds or so from the start of the main strip and as such is quite quiet.

On arriving at the hotel we thought we had come to the wrong place as the reception looked fantastic.
It's a shame that the room did not live up to the reception, but considering we paid less than 180 for the week i guess it was not that bad.
Biggest issue was the fact there was not enough hot water for two people to have a decent shower. You had to be very quick !
Even though we were on the 5th floor i was not happy that the balcony door would not lock, and i complained about it. They sent somebody to fix it but it was still not good, and seeing as it is quite easy to get from one balcony to the other i was rather loathed to leave anything of value in the room.

Breakfast was very poor with no fruit whatsoever.
Drinks were expensive compared to all the bars etc.
Grounds were fine and the pool looked okay although we spent all of our time on the wonderful beach just across the road.

The Sardine shack on the beach was fantastic value for money as were many other restaurants.
Plenty of great places to eat and a nice quiet and friendly bar worth visiting is Taffy's.

Would we go back? Certainly to the same area, but not sure about the hotel.

we just returned from a two week holiday in the luar hotel. i must admit the hotel is lovely and on my first sighting of the hotel i couldnt belive my luck, as there is a beautiful water feature in the hotel reception, marble floors extreemy spacious, we were greeted by the owner who is lovely and really helped us find our feet. first for the bad. when we found our room i was in shock to see the sealing leaking which lead to towels being placed all over the floors tables and sofas the entire stay. the rooms are plesent also the balcony was a very nice size, maid service every day. another problem was that the water tank only holds enough hot water for half a bath of water and can be a problem if more than one is staying in any one room at a time, as it takes a fue hours to heat back up again. we also encountered the extreemly rude nasty bar lady in the hotel that made it her mission to ruin our holiday, and evry one elses at that, plus the prices in the bar are at least double to the prices just down the prominade. i also ate in claires snack bar which was nice untill i was served raw eggs which isnt very nice. now the good BULLI E PUPE is the best restrant in algarve we ate there almost every night and i must admit it really is the best food in town the best service too, anna-marria claudia, sonia, and francis all became very good freinds and i felt i was leaving them behind at the end of my stay. the also gave us almagina on the house evey night, which is lovely. the beaches are amazing and should be explored more than we did. plenty to do in praia de rocha and a most beautiful place to be cant wait till my next visit.

My boyfriend and i stayed at this hotel for a week in june last year and overall it was okay. We are a young couple (20) but we are not party animals and we like to stay in quieter places with nice restaurants and bars. Pria de Rocha is nice, the best part is definately the beaches...stunning, at the time of year we visited they were quiet, not at all overcrowded.
Anyway back to the hotel. When we arrived we were quite impressed with the foyer and reception, it was large, airy and very clean. The receptionist was helpful enough. When we went to our room we were slightly dissapointed, it was very dark and dated, the beds were rock hard and the pillows hard and tiny. The room itself was quite spacious as was the bathroom. There is a safe you can hire out, a mini fridge and plenty of wardrobe space. The tv is tiny and faces a 90degree angle from the bed so you cannot watch in comfort, not a huge problem though. What I didn't like so much was that the bathroom wasn't very clean although there was a maid service everyday. The shower was ok but had dirt caked round the edges...i wouldn't have had a bath. They only provide soap so you need to bring your own shampoo etc the towels are tiny and rock hard but do get changed daily. All in all the room wasn't bad, i just never felt comfortable there. A word of warning, do lock your balcony as we saw a guy climbing up the stepped balconys in the night, it could have been someone who was locked out but i doubt it. Also my boyfriend didn't like the way the doors locked, he said it was very old fashioned with just the key and you couldn't dead lock the door. As regards the breakfast i cannot comment.... we didn't eat at the hotel at all. We had paid for B&B but i am very fussy about where i eat and i just didn't get a nice feeling from the place. The pool area is nice enough, a large clean pool although most of the loungers are broken or cracked. The gardens are well maintained.
The best aspect of the hotel is that is is only a few steps away from a beautiful beach. Also it is situated at the quieter end of a "strip" so you don't get very many people walking past the hotel. Most of the nicer restaurants are at the other end of the "strip" down by the harbour. A great place for couples/families looking for a chilled out holiday. Not so good for groups of friends wanting to party. I would not stay at the hotel again but would probably go back the area. I have since heard Alvor is a lot nicer.

We stayed at the Luar Hotel for 5 nights in April 2008. It was rated as a 3star hotel but to be honest it was a lot better than some of the 4stars we've stayed in on the Algarve. We paid extra for a seaview but there are no rooms with balconies actually facing the sea, they are all side views. The room was very clean and comfortable with a T.V. , fridge and a safe. The staff were all very helpful and all spoke good English. It was quiet in April which was great for us but we wouldn't go there in the summer as it would be too commercialised. If you are a football fan you will love it as the pubs are nearly all sports bars showing premier league football . There are bus stops and a taxi rank nearby so getting around isn't a problem. We would recommend a day trip to Alvor (approx 6 euros in a taxi). It is a pretty fishing village with lots of good seafood restaurants along the prom. Lagos is another good place to visit - less than 4 Euros on the bus - bigger than Alvor with lots of shops and a marina. We would stay here again but only off season and only for a short break.

We have just come back from a 7 day holiday at the Luar booked through FlyGlobespan and found it to be really good value for money. The rooms were basic with a TV and safe but very clean and we had a nice view from the balcony. The real selling point is the location as it is at the quiet end of the resort but within yards of all the restaurants and bars. It is also opposite a beautiful stretch of beach which can be reached by some steep steps going down whereas a lot of the other hotels we passed seemed to be some distance from the beach. The pool was very nice and clean and despite it being the October school holidays, sometimes we were the only ones by the pool so it was very quiet and we had no trouble getting a sunbed. The staff were really friendly and helpful when we asked for recommendations. The resort of Praia de Rocha is nothing special apart from the beach, far too many English cafes and Irish bars for our liking but we managed to find some lovely local restaurants close to the hotel. I would recommend Safari for good seafood with sea views. Food everywhere was generally excellent and very reasonable. My only complaint about the hotel would be the breakfast. It is a 3* hotel so we weren't expecting anything fancy but found the choice to be very limited with just cereal, bread, cheese and ham. The juice was also watered down or squash. It would have been nice to have had some pastries or yogurt or fruit on offer. For what we paid though, we thought we got a really good bargain at this hotel and would definately stay there again if returning to this resort.

Had a wonderful , lazy time at the Hotel Luar in September 2007. As other postings it is near to the centre of activities the quiet and the noisy areas. Pool excellent very clean (maybe at times not enough sunbeds!). Maid service every day - clean towels every day. Breakfast is a continental breakfast but I believe that for extra money you can have a cooked breakfast i.e. bacon, egss, boiled eggs etc.

Excellent restuarants - La Boteili & Umbertos first class food. Best bar was Johns! Took a trip to Alvor - beautiful place nice shops etc. Portimao was easy to reach by the bus from outside the Hotel ( about every 10 minutes) and 1euro 20 each. Beaches beautiful and excellent boardwalk for walking along the beach with restuarants, many also open in the evenings. We certainly walked a lot down to the marina so came back a bit fitter than before.

Everyone was very friendly. Couple of touts trying to sell cheap cigarettes. The people selling goods on the street (even if you were not buying) were a lot of fun too, and respected you if you said no. No pestering at all.
