Nice Hotel, if your lucky you will get a se view with large balcony.

Reception are and swimming pool are very good, unfortunately our room left little to be desired. We were only there for a few hours each nite to sleep so were not overly bothered, but if I had gone with a family or wife/Mrs I would not have been impressed.

The A/C need to be on all the time, but as a consequence the carpet in the room was soaking wet and hence the room smelt fausty!!!

Not exactly sure what I paid as It was part of a large group package, but I would not have chosen to stay there if I was making the arrangements!!!

I went with a friend for a week and before we went I was a bit worried about the hotel due to some of the bad reviews. However we were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived to a nice clean hotel with friendly, but a little harrassed, reception staff. Our rooms were clean and had everything we needed except the plugs were too far away from the mirrors if you needed to use a mirror while drying your hair.

The bar and snack bar were great and really reasonable, we had lunch there most days and the bar staff are great and very friendly. It's a shame it isn't used more.

The downsides were the sunbeds at the pool there weren't enough for everyone and most people had towels down at 8 am and a lot were left with towels on them for hours when other people could have been using them. We actually saw a very heated argument over someone removing towels to use the bed. The hotel didn't bother about this issue. There should be enough for everyone, the breakfast was also not so good, quite often very cold, even the coffee.

This hotel was in a great location, next to bars etc but far enough away not to get the noise at night. I wouldn't agree there were 100 stairs down to the beach as I would never have made that, we counted about 35 in one area, however there are many sets you can use to get to the lovely beaches.

All in all it was a nice holiday, nice place and I would recommend it.

We read the reviews below before we booked and also glad we did. Arrived mid morning on the Monday and well recieved by friendly staff. Our room was really nicely laid out, large wardrobes, tv, fridge, well equiped bathroom, balconey etc.

Breakfast was buffet with lots of different breads and rolls to chose from, cheeses, meats, butters, etc. Also had bacon and scrambled egg on offer, as well as 2 types of cereal, two types of juice, tea, coffee and facilities to toast. If that is enough choice (and it was for us) then it is great value...although i was only there for a week and it might have got a bit repetative in week too!!!

Pool facilities were great and although the pool gets sun all day thre is plenty of shade available around it with palm trees or umbrellas.

Eating out was great..sooo much choice...i would recomend the all you can eat buffet at the chinese resturant ( on the left hand side about 200 yrds from hotel.. about 20 dishes to chose from all for 8.95 euro) the Itallian resurant was great ( about 100yrds from hotel on left hand side- recommend the carbonara) and the Irish bar on the main strip ( further down the road on the right hand side- recomend the chiken in mushroom sauce or the lasagnia) which has a great outside eating area looking over the sea. Only used cafe in hotel once and it is very reasonable with the usual pool side fair...(recomend the cheese burgers and milkshakes!!!)

Took trip to Albufera old town by train from Portamoa ( which cost 4.95euro return but you need to take taxi from station to beach as station about 2 miles from centre which is a further 4 euro each way) also took bus to Alvor which has a stunning beach and is a beautiful little fishing village to wander around, with many great little cafes. Took buss back to Praia da Vue and wandered along prom back to hotel.

A great week, in a great little hotel. fantastic centre for a short break, or a two week one if you want to travel about by bus car or train. Great choices of resturants near by, some nice little shops and fantastic beaches all in a stone throws distance....

One final word of warning is that the climb down (and up) to the beaches in Praia de Rocha are all down pretty steep steps...about 100 steps in each access. so you really need to be quite fit to do it, especially on a hot day...met an elderly couple that really struggled back up and hadnt read that the beaches were so much lower than the hotels. Praia de Vue and Alvor however have very easy ( and infact disabled) access to all the beaches there.

I had not been to the algarve for 20 years and had forgotten how lovely the beaches are .we booked our flights and hotel with globespan so were limited as to which hotel and place to stay . i spent a lot of time on trip advisor looking at reviews before deciding on hotel luar and am really glad i chose it despite some bad reviews . it was the positve reviews that attracted me in the first place and they are all accurate . the pool is in sun all day and is very nice . the gardens at the side of the pool lend character and are an alternative to the hard sunbeds or if you cant find a sunbed or umbrella .the location is excellent with a number of beaches to choose from right on the doorstep .I note trip advisor has divided the area up into 3 sections . praia da rocha , praia da vau and portimao . basically portimao is the town and praia da rocha is the local beach . praia da vau is a beach area further along . hotel luar was in the middle so we could walk half an hour to our right and go to praia da vau or walk half an hour to our left and reach the marina .whichever way you go its all beach .
perhaps because i had prepared for some of the negative reviews i did not find anything a problem . for example we did not find the breakfasts disappointing . we like muesli and bought fruit and yoghurt at the local supermarket to garnish ours having been made aware there would be none . the reasonable sized fridge accommodated this easily plus water wine and beer so we never needed to use the bar at the hotel .
we quite liked the strip for somewhere to go in the evening .it was always lively with lots of choice of bars cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes . if you got fed up you could take a bus or taxi to portimao or alvor .we found portimao interesting with afew nice squares with fountains , riverside restaurants and an old town . the museum is worth a visit and the naval bar cafe restaurant with lovely views to ferragudo which is also worth a visit . alvor is ok but would be boring to stay there for a week and the beaches are not a patch on praia da rocha or vau. i found the staff very helpful and everyone spoke good english . in fact the portugese people were very helpful and friendly in general .i would definitely go back to the area and the hotel as it looked classier than a lot of the high rise hotels and apartments further along the strip .

My girlfriend and I just returned from our 10 day holiday staying at Luar. It's a nice hotel, I only have a couple of bad things to say, first of all don't expect much at breakfast time, it was the same thing everyday as I'm sure it has been for a long time. Don't expect a double bed either, all you will get is 2 singles pushed together. The room is a good size with a balcony, TV and a mini fridge. There is air con but does not work that fast. The maids were good our sheets and towels were changed nearly everyday.

Now for the good things, the pool area is amazing! The pool itself is huge and there is lots of area and sunbeds to just laze about all day. When you walk out the gate from the hotel you only have to walk 30 seconds to either the beach or the main strip. It's a fantastic location. There are lots of nice resturants and pubs (which are cheaper than the hotel) to have a good meal and some drinks. Grab a "freemap" from most shops and it will give you a great guide of the area with tips on what to do.

Overall it's not a bad hotel depending on what type of holiday you want. I will definitely be heading back to this area again but probably in a self catering hotel...
