This hotel has very good staff who speak english and are good with customer service. All three of the staff I interacted with were very polite and helpful, even when I had an issue with my room. The Hotel Porto Mar is on the streetcar line and close to the beach and to a string of wonderful fish restaurants. That said, it is in a neighborhood that is pretty quiet and old fashioned. I found it nice to walk along the beach and to explore the waterfront area, but overall Matosinhos is not one of the more interesting parts of the greater Porto area.
The room I was in was very basic with a tiny tv, and a view of the airshaft. The price I paid was in line with that quality of room for this area. It's a good deal if you don't want to pay Porto prices but need to be in the general area (for example, if you are coming/going from the airport).
The hotel itself is a nice old building, a bit creaky but still tidy and presentable. My impression was that the staff were doing their best to make everyone's stay a good one, but the entire hotel was in need of sprucing-up.

Not 100% due to loud music being played at the reception by the local guests.
The receptionists was very polite and helpful.
It's perfectly located close to several restaurants and cafés it is also within a reasonable distance from the beach.

it's really nothing special. Poor furnitures, old details, kind of barocco stylish bed and curtains. the bathroom is small and with no heating. it's not the ideal place to get for visiting Porto. but if you want to stay close to the Matosinhos waves it's cheap enough.
I've changed the following day for Sheraton Porto.

This was the most expensive of the hotels we stayed in on our travels in NW Spain and Portugal, but it wasn't the nicest by any means. The hotel needed sprucing up and seemed dated and depressing.
We booked a room well in advance and took the confirmation form with us to reception, only for the receptionists to behave as if they know nothing of our reservation, and made us feel a bit uncomfortable and unwelcome as they whispered to each other
Our room was small, cramped and at the back of the hotel. The bed was hard and uncomfortable. A rather sparse breakfast was served in the gloomiest room imaginable with a TV blaring away in it. There was a list of breakfast 'extras' you could order at a supplementary price. They included real orange juice instead of the orange squash which was served as standard. The coffee was grim.
Matosinhos itself is a fine place to visit by day, with many seafood restaurants, but in the evening most of them seem to shut. We struggled to find somewhere to eat even on a Saturday night. All in all, our stay there was not great.

Room Tip: Try for a room at the front. They looked bigger.

Just a 10 minute walk from a magnificent beach, but right on the tram line that leads into town. You can also get here by tram from the airport with just one change. The hotel staff are friendly and the room was clean (but no views at all!). Breakfast was basic but filling, avoid the orange-coloured"juice" and the urn of coffee! Great, authentic, restaurants just around the corner (especially if you like seafood)

After business stay in Paris we decided to have several days off on the Atlantic and visit ed Porto area in Portugal.
By chance we found 'Hotel Porto Mar' situated centrally in ocean side suburb town Matosinhos well connected to Porto.
The hotel was absolute jewel for what we needed: charming with wonderful interior, big rooms, location is superb - in main pedestrian but quiet street (only modern trams) with access to public transportation and airport, nice short walk to the beach and many fish restaurants around, even green market ...and on top of everything discreet and extremely helpful personnel.. Cost of stay was a fraction of that in Paris.
On downside only minor things such as not fresh fruits for buffet breakfast and not international satellite channels, but they promised improvements in those areas for our next visit.

I stayed here with my husband while waiting to see a medical specialist and for hospital appointments at what was a very stressful time . The staff were incredibly helpful, sympathetic but non intrusive. To complicate matters we had our dog with us.

We were given a balcony room, great for our dog, which was clean and comfortable. All the staff from the room maids to the manager were kindness itself, nothing was too much trouble and yet we were never hassled or felt that we were causing a problem. I hope that my next stay will be at a less stressful time.

I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting value for money and a great location with easy access to Porto via the metro.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor front have balconies
