This hotel has very good staff who speak english and are good with customer service. All three of the staff I interacted with were very polite and helpful, even when I had an issue with my room. The Hotel Porto Mar is on the streetcar line and close to the beach and to a string of wonderful fish restaurants. That said, it is in a neighborhood that is pretty quiet and old fashioned. I found it nice to walk along the beach and to explore the waterfront area, but overall Matosinhos is not one of the more interesting parts of the greater Porto area.
The room I was in was very basic with a tiny tv, and a view of the airshaft. The price I paid was in line with that quality of room for this area. It's a good deal if you don't want to pay Porto prices but need to be in the general area (for example, if you are coming/going from the airport).
The hotel itself is a nice old building, a bit creaky but still tidy and presentable. My impression was that the staff were doing their best to make everyone's stay a good one, but the entire hotel was in need of sprucing-up.
