“Star Quality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013 via mobile

Let me first of all say I do not want to comment as so many reviewers do about the accuracy of the 'star' ratings.
I have stayed in many different hotels from 'pension' to bed and breakfast to boutique and luxury and have loved some and disliked others. Do I know what constitutes a five star, actually probably not,but I do know what I /We like and we really liked the Hotel Volcan.
Having endured a fractious and delayed departure, many thanks Thomas Cook, we arrived late and a little tense to say the least.
The reception staff were professional ,courteous and welcoming and our bags were transported quickly to our lovely rooms on the fifth floor.
Spacious,well appointed and very clean.
Lovely harbour/sea view.
The hotel is a little bit of a maize at first and a word of warning, some of the rooms could be a little difficult for the elderly or disabled as there are few lifts and quite a lot of stairs!
We stayed half board and found the breakfast and evening meals to be of a high standard with plenty of choice.
Really enjoyed the rabbit, paella and salads.
The egg/omelette chef was nothing short of superb, working between two stations nothing was too much trouble and everything served with a cheery smile, she was a little gem.
To be fair most of the staff were very good, the odd sullen character but hey so were some of the guests!
My only slight criticism was having to pay for bottled water at the evening meal, ( tap water is not an option, as it is generally unfit to drink), I felt that it was a little unfair to charge especially as it is freely available at breakfast time.
Had read an awful lot about the sun beds, i.e. condition and availability but did not find either to be a problem.
Yes some of the beds looked a little worse for wear after the summer season but as I tend to lie on the towels provided and not the bed,not an issue!
The hotel does have a policy that beds can not be reserved until after 9 am and generally this was observed with only a few transgressions but all quite civilised.
Did note that the villas across from the hotel are allowed complimentary access to the facilities so perhaps at the more busy times of the year things could get a little crowded, but fine in October.
All in all super stay in a lovely resort close to the harbour, with some great lunchtime tapas, about 15 mins from the beach at Playa Dorada and a further 15mins into town.
I would and will definitely return,

Ideally I would like to give this a 5 for half the facilities and a 1 for the other half. Reception and staff were all very friendly and helpful - much better than tour rep for information and booking trips (last minute trips book through reception and we were really happy with the quality and price of these). Room was lovely and spacious, but the size of the balcony was small for 3 adults. On the plus side our 18 year old daughter did get a proper bed and did not have to sleep on a z-bed an enormous plus. Pools were clean but the chairs around the non acclimatised poor were very grubby looking and tired. We were lucky that we were there the week before half term and left as the hotel became full and it was very apparent that there are not enough sun beds to meet everyone's needs. Entertainment in the evening was poor. The food was not a 5* standard, salads were good but the main course was poor. As all main meat / fish was cooked to order there were frequent queues which either meant that veg went cold or your had to fight your way back through the queue for meat / fish to get the veg. Veg was soft and overcooked, meat / fish was dry. Kettle in the room was a real bonus, but as there were 3 of us, 3 cups would have been thoughtful. Complimentary water was a great touch, but again only 2 bottles. Brilliant sea front location on the Marina and good flat walks in both directions. Markets int he Marina on Wednesday and Saturday - touristy but not tacky and worth a wander. Overall a good holiday, but perhaps they need to concentrate on getting the basics right before the add the luxuries.

As much as I would like to I cannot see how this hotel gets 5 stars. If you book a standard room half board like we did then this hotel should rate as 4 star and not 5. We paid extra for garden view but I cannot see how a bit of grass and a white wall class as garden view. The receptionist when booking in seemed to pre-empt any complaint by saying that the hotel was full and that all suites were booked out until after the end of December. This clearly was not true. Having said all that we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in Playa Blanca. The hotel has an enviable position which probably cannot be beaten. Once we had got over the lack of the view we did enjoy the quietness of the room and the easy access to the swimming pool and the gate which led to the Marina. There is a fridge in the room which allows you to purchase your own drinks which can be taken to the pool area. The room was spacious and extremely comfortable. Everyone reviewing this hotel seems to complain about the sun beds which were an eyesore and not very comfortable. Having looked around other 5 star hotels in the resort the management really should address this issue. Perhaps they themselves should visit the Princess Yazia Suites Hotel. However you are not packed in like sardines and sunbathing was a pleasure as were the swimming pools. One complaint would be that the management of the dining room was not particularly good. Some of the staff in the dining room were quite miserable and the task of seating people seemed to cause a few problems leaving you standing there whilst they cleared and found you a table. The food was good but choice of food could have been varied more often. We were able to eat in the Italian restaurant on site one night instead of the dining room. The food and service were excellent but it lacked ambience. Perhaps the hotel could consider at least dimming the lights. Although bed sheets were crisp and clean the outer pillow cases on top of the bed obviously hadn't been washed for quite a while and smelt of sweat from other people. They were actually disgusting. If these problems could be ironed out then I couldn't think of a better place to stay in Playa Blanca.

I know how hard it is to choose a hotel in Playa Blanca if you've never been to Lanzarote before, but I know I would have kicked myself if I had not chosen the Hotel Volcan. The position is perfect and we were sorry to leave this beautiful hotel.

We emailed in advance to say that, as we were light sleepers, we would like a nice quiet room. We were given a lovely large room (591) with distant sea and island views, next to cliff tops and the Castillo del Aguila (an 18th century tower that was built to defend the island from pirate attack). Do not book this room though unless you are very agile, as there are many paths, steps and corridors to negotiate to get to it. In fact, if you have any mobility problems, do let the hotel know by email so that they can allocate you a suitable room.

The hotel is set out like a village and the rooms make you feel like you're in a typical Spanish house, decorated in cool blue and white with tiled floors. There is an excellent choice of toiletries which are replenished regularly, including scented candles. There is a large walk-in wardrobe in room 591, air-conditioning, a large ceiling fan, free safe and fridge. Slippers and dressing gowns are provided, along with lots of white towels. Our room had a large terrace with two chairs and small table.

We booked on a bed and breakfast basis so that we could dine at all the restaurants in the marina. The breakfast choice in the hotel is amazing and is served from 7.30 - 11.00 am. Too many items to list here, but you may like to note that cava and rosé cava are freely available, along with a large bottle of vodka, should you feel like a Bloody Mary or perhaps vodka and orange! Do try the homemade yogurt - it is absolutely delicious. So smooth and creamy. Also, don't overlook the table in the middle with Canarian specialities. The coffee is really good too.

It took me a while to get round to going to the daytime activities and immediately regretted not going before. Ida is great at providing these and I enjoyed the painting, yoga and cheese and wine tasting. Everything is suitable for beginners, so don't be shy. The clubhouse had a selection of books and magazines to borrow while you're lazing around by the pool.

The staff on reception are very helpful and if anything is not to your complete satisfaction they will try to sort it out, so don't be afraid to ask. The wifi is fine in both the reception area and at the bottom of the waterfall. There is a very good gift shop on the same level as reception, with very reasonable prices.

There is an excursion office in the marina, just behind the restaurant, La Taberna, where we booked four excursions. The lady in there was extremely good in helping us choose which ones to go on, and when we decided to cancel the fourth one as we realised it wasn't really for us, there was no problem getting our money refunded.

We certainly had an amazing holiday here.

Room Tip: Email in advance if you have any mobility problems as the hotel is set on a hillside with many paths...

We stayed in room 418 for a week in mid October and were very pleased. Unlike many other guests, we did not go for the Club Volcan upgrade. The outside appearance of the hotel is unique, the neon lava at night is a nod to nearby Timanfaya. The cone acted as a homing beacon on returning from a day in our hire car. This was handy in the confusing streets of Playa Blanca! The interior layout is intriguing, with a pewless church, waterfall and various cacti. The landscaping sets this way way apart from a grim apartment block that haunts your holiday nightmares. Just wandering around and up and down finding new ways to you room was entertainment.

The room, restaurants, public areas and pool were scrupulously clean. The whole place has been maintained to a high standard, and doesn't really show signs of age. Our bathroom was spotless and we had a large, comfortable bed. There was a separate seating area with four seats and a table. Even the balcony had an indoor and outdoor section. This made a big difference, we spent a bit more time in the room as it wasn't claustrophobic. And the sea view as promised was perfect. Having a fridge to fill with your own beer was most welcome.

Breakfast was plentiful and surely the fussiest of eaters would have had no complaints? The variety was wide with an excellent hot food section. Truly a breakfast machine! I had three courses most days, the blueberry muffin was particularly good. The fresh and clean theme ran through here too, it was all extremely appetising.

The surrounding area is a quiet marina with several restaurants and shops. For a peaceful dinner and stroll it is perfect. No banging music or English breakfasts. Although if you want that, it's only a 20 minute walk to the west (Playa Dorada). There are several tapas bars, one French and two Italian restaurants and a supermarket all within less than 5 minutes. For the sedate week away from work and to-do lists, this area will suit well. If you want to venture out in the day, you can easily hire a car too.

If you are expecting 5 stars by modern standards, you may not get quite what you expect. This is by no means a negative comment. Back when the hotel was built, I imagine it absolutely was 5 stars. I am just not sure the hotel has changed much since then.

As for the nearest beach, you will have to go to Papagayo by water taxi or walk 20 mins to Playa Dorada.

The Volcan Lanzarote is unique, friendly, peaceful, clean and well situated. Thanks for helping us have a great week.

Room Tip: 418 was right at the edge so fairly quiet. Sea view is worth it.

We stayed at the Volcan for 7 days at the beginning of October.

The hotel is in an excellent position in Playa Blanca overlooking the marina (literally 50mts from the pool gate).

The hotel was very clean and having decided to upgrade to the "club volcan" section, I can highly recommend it.

This area is an adult only section and gave extra facilities over the rest of the hotel. Like separate breakfast dining area (very nice room and attentive staff), complimentary afternoon tea (or coffee) and cakes, plus an open pre-dinner bar.
It also had its own [heated] pool and pool bar.

When we stayed there were always plenty of sun loungers, although as others have said, the Balinese beds always seemed to be reserved early in the mornings, even though this goes against hotel guidelines.

We went half-board, but we would recommend the B&B option, as the evening meal in the main buffet restaurant was of poor quality and the service no better. Especially noticeable, after the breakfast service in the club volcan. And with the marina with all it's restaurants nearby there is no problem finding somewhere to dine.

As part of our booking, we were able to choose to dine in a different restaurant on two of our 7 evenings, which we did. Firstly we swapped to the on-site Japanese restaurant (Kazan) which was excellent and highly recommended and secondly we swapped to the on-site Italian restaurant (Rubicon), again good food and service.

On our last night we dined in the marina area at La Casa Roja a nice restaurant, ignoring the slightly pompous maitre d'.

One other recommendation I would make to any cyclists or would-be cyclists who want to see some of the island, is to contact Magma Bikes (magmabikescanarias) (located in the hotel next door) and go on a mountain bike tour with Jorge. A great guy with years of island knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning tour of the central island which took in the different Lanzarote landscapes as well of some local amenities.

All-in-all a great hotel in a fabulous location, only let down by its poor evening buffet dining.

Room Tip: Book in to the club volcan

First visit to the Volcan in August and was extreamly impressed so much so have booked up already to go next year . The room was amazing and ideal so close to the kiddie pool ( room 245) and stepped out onto the pool area from the room and had a good view of the marina. The restaurant was very good and catered for all the families taste and although was a buffet was far superior to the other hotels in playa Blanca we have stayed in. As we booked through Thomas Cook we were allowed to eat in other restautrants in the marina twice per week which was a great option we had not been expecting. Staff were always polite and helpful. All in all a really relaxing holiday.
