“Fantastic hotel”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Stayed here with Family in July 2014. Surprised at some of the negative reviews as in-laws had stayed here several times and really liked it. Got two rooms next to each other with adults and 1 child in each. Stayed for 10 days and wished it was longer. Kids club was a highlight - staff were fantastic & it runs twice a day from 11-1 and 3-5 for kids aged between 5 & 10. Kids would've gone back in the afternoon but we managed to persuade them to come with us to the beach. Playa Dorada, a lovely beach with deck chairs & umbrellas for hire, is below the Princess Yaiza hotel, and a nice walk from the Hotel Vulcan. We've been to Lanzarote a lot over the last 5 years so knew the beachfront.marina boardwalk connected everything up, and Dorada beach was only 20 minutes or so. The famous Papagayo beach is in the other direction from the hotel but we haven't made it that far yet.
We booked half-board which included a buffet breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was excellent - they even had Cava and Vodka on offer for anyone who wanted it. The omelette counter was popular with my husband who was happy to queue every day for a delicious cooked omelette breakfast. Kids were happy with the choice of cooked items, cereals, pastries & toast. Dinner was also a buffet and everyone in our party was happy with it. A different choice of protein each night including a grill where you could choose what you wanted cooked. The choice of vegetables was good too, better than many of the marina restaurants. Overall the food was great and we were more than happy with the quality & choice. The kids predictably went for the pasta after a couple of nights of being more adventurous.
The rooms were a really good size with a lounge area as well as the bed. There was plenty of room for all our stuff and the bathroom was a good size too. Any toiletries we used up were replaced and the cleaners were very considerate with their timing - working out that as we were out most afternoons that would be the best time to come in, The room also had a fridge which stayed on even when the room was empty. Good for storing cava and milk. Plus there was a kettle in the room too.
Kids loved the pools - they weren't heated but it didn't matter in July. It could get windy at times which was a shame and the poolside beds were nearly always booked by 10 so there was a bit of a scramble to get ones by the pool the kids wanted to be in. There were spare chairs around that could be moved if need be. There are always people keen enough to get up at the crack of dawn to reserve the space they want. We usually found something though.
We didn't use the evening entertainment much although the kids liked the mini-disco that ran in the bar most nights at 8pm. Other reviews have said the evening entertainment wasn't great but as we didn't really need it I can't say one way or another. There are bars in walking distance of the hotel if you need some nightlife but for a family on holiday with young-ish kids this hotel met all our needs. Another plus of this hotel is that having rented a car in the past, the Vulcan is positioned at the end of the marina so you can walk to most things if you need to - the market, shops and restaurants of the marina were all in walking distance as was the beach so we didn't need a car this time.
Overall we had a great time and enjoyed the hotel immensely. We'd definitely go there again.

Wow, we were so pleased with our choice of hotel. The room was better than we expected. Room 452 with a massive balcony. It was our pearl wedding anniversary and were greeted with a bottle of sparkling wine and a bowl of fruit. The room was well equipped with smelliest, scented candle, shower gel, bath robes, slippers. Lots of towels and bed changed regularly.

We took our own kettle but there was already one there. Lots of places around the pool, we had no trouble getting a sun lounger. We went b&b and the breakfast was fab, lots of choice. The hotel staff were lovely, nothing to much trouble. Management were always visible making sure things went well.

WiFi was rubbish, this is due to no fibre optic on the island however I just used the computer in main reception free of charge which was great.

Room Tip: Rom 452 is fab

What a fantastic hotel. We just returned from a 7 night stay at this elegant and spacious hotel. We went half board and the food was very good. It was buffet style dining with plenty of choice. The pools were not over crowded and we always got a sunbed. We were booked into the Club Volcan package which got you into an exclusive part of the hotel, where you had access to the roof top pool area that had lots of four poster-style wooden spa beds and the use of a hot tub and also a pool with swim up bar. This exclusivity also include a breakfast room that was opened from 8am-11am with plenty of choice and afternoon tea and free bar in the evening. There was free use of the TV room, with plenty of books, newspapers and magazines and free fast WiFi in the lounge and reception. The Marina in front of the hotel offers many bars and restaurants, the hotel is placed in a quieter part of the island and if you want peace and quiet this is a brilliant hotel to go to. Only a short 15 minute walk away along the coast you can visit a much more livelier part of Playa Blanca with plenty more restaurants and bars. Attention to details was second to none, from the welcome courtesy call to the fresh flowers in the bathroom was absolutely spot on. The staff were very courteous and not over attentive, which was just fine, as we have been in other 5* hotels where they were constantly in your face offering their services. A hotel we will definitely revisit.

Room Tip: all rooms face the marina and sea, and if you can choose to go club Volcan, this will give access to...

We have just returned from our second visit to the Hotel Volcan in Playa Blanca.

The hotel is situated very near to the Marina Rubicon, where there are lots of lovely restaurants, cafés and tapas bars (and also some clothes and accessory shops and a couple of supermarkets). The beach at Playa Dorada is a short walk away along the seafront and you can continue along this seafront walk-way and be in the centre of Playa Blanca in less than 20 mins.

The hotel is built into the hillside and is spread over 5 floors. We had a lovely, spacious 2 room suite with a view over the Marina and the sea. Despite the hotel being full there was sufficient public space to not feel crowded; and given the geography of the hotel, there is very little noise from adjacent rooms and we did not feel overlooked on our balcony. The only caveat I would say is that if you have limited mobility or you are using a pushchair please phone the hotel before you go to check the accessibility of your room, as not all rooms are accessible by lift.

The bedroom was very large, nicely furnished and accessorised as was the bathroom (with a large shower, a separate bath and lots of lovely bath salts, shampoos, shower gels, scented candles and fresh flowers).

We ate in the hotel poolside cafés most lunchtimes and the food was good and reasonably priced eg approx €6 for a club sandwich, salad and fries that you could share between 2 people.
The breakfast, included in our package was self service buffet style catering for all tastes. Cold plates, fruits, omelettes cooked to order plus cava and vodka for Bloody Marys. On a couple of mornings there were speciality tables with hand cut Serrano hams, Canarian delicacies and sweetmeats.
Again, although the hotel was busy, breakfast was a well managed affair and we did not have to wait to be seated and there was no rush to leave the dining room.

The staff were well mannered, courteous and professional. The entertainments team provided activities for children and adults. They were enthusiastic and great fun. There were opportunities to take part in activities as diverse as wine tasting, Zumba, oil painting and Pilates.

We went with 2 teenagers and had a brilliant holiday at the Hotel Volcan. It was a relaxing break. The staff were attentive, but not overbearing. The management are keenly aware that there is competition and are happy to go the extra mile to ensure that you are having a wonderful holiday. Completely unprompted, they surprised me during the holiday- by sending me a bottle of Cava on my birthday! They must have noted my dob from my passport on arrival and arranged this, which was a lovely gesture.

The only downsides, which apply to other hotels that I have used in Playa Blanca, are i) the pools are a little on the cool side and ii) wi-fi is limited around the hotel (although it is free and accessible in the hotel lobby).

We would not hesitate to return to the Volcan and would recommend it for either a couple or a family holiday.

This hotel is thee best we have ever stayed in for a family holiday. From the moment you walk in to arriving at your room you will not be disappointed. The beds are the most comfortable we every had on a sun holiday. The food is great ( especially breakfast)... What a choice of food.
Certainly looking to book again already for Xmas. Maybe the Club Volcan next time.
Don't hesitate booking this hotel. You'll be glad you did.

We have just spent 10 nights at the Volcan taking two rooms as we were a party of six (three children age 9, 7 and 3). The hotel felt like a five star experience but for us the personal attention and friendliness that Gaby and her colleagues in the Kids Club gave us was fantastic. We don't tend to use the kids clubs when away but the quality of activities on offer kept all children interested with energy and dedication! Should we go back to Lanzarote, we would look at the Volcan for another stay.

I've never written a hotel review before but since people appear to pay a lot of attention to trip advisor it's worth giving this hotel some credit. Although at full capacity the hotel never seemed over crowded and everyone of the staff were polite and friendly (a special shout out to Sandra who runs the pool bar/cafe, she was superb and she's also the reason we probably spent far more money than we intended!). Our kids are 3 and 5 years old and loved it. Just outside the hotel you're directly into the marina with all it's restaurants and shops so even popping to the supermarket for a few supplies isn't too challenging. Constant breeze so even in August it never felt too hot. Yes the wifi throughout the entire hotel could be improved but that's probably true of most places within the Canary Islands. A fabulous hotel and even with young children we left feeling very relaxed. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: For young children and needing quick access to pool, small playground, kids club and breakfast Room...
