“A lovely 10 day break”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

We ( family of 4- 2 adults, 2 boys, 14/10) have just returned from a 10 day visit to Rio Playa Blanca. Check in was very efficient with relevent information and directions to our bungalow given. Reception was extreamly good throughout our stay and able to deal with numerous requests (kettle, extra pillows, clothes airer, even a pencil sharpener for my blunted eye liner!) Ana was very helpful & conscientious- Thank you. The bungalows are clean and simple, our 1st however had a fault on the AC and after realising it couldn't be fixed we were moved. They are cleaned daily (except Fri) and towels and linens changed. The beds are better if a topper is in use, otherwise a bit too hard. Complimentary shower gel & shampoos are also provided. TV remote has to be hired though the variety of channels is very limited. Safe is also hired with a deposit returned on departure. The grounds are well kept and tidy as is the pool area, the pool guy constantly empties the bins and tidies up the numerous plastic glasses that are blown about, the toilets are regularly cleaned throughout the day. The restaurant was clean with an abundance of different dishes- I defy anyone not to find anything they don't like. Freshly cooked and hot meals, salads, soups, fruits- delicious. All the staff work very hard to keep things moving and to a maintain a good standard. The pool is very refreshing(!) but is enjoyable once you're in- there wasn't an issue of it being unswimmable because it was too cold. The sunbed situation is a shame- mainly because fellow guests selfishly ignore the numerous requests not to reserve beds, then go off for a large part of the day. Or reserve multiples then only use a couple, thinking that they have full ownership of the fixed parasols- woe betide if you try to sneak in at the end. Poor show- you know who you are!!! The pool guy will try and find you a sunbed however.
The entertainment team work tirelessly to ensure everyone has a good time, though it's not pushy or disruptive. Evening shows were entertaining from a sarcastic point of view- each to his own though. The bars are busy at times with a good selection of drinks served in small plastic glasses- you are also only allowed to fetch 2 at a time. Wifi hit & miss but will occasionally work down by the pool. Hireable PC's/printer facilities are available for checking in for your return flight. A nice walk down to the Playa Blanca with the harbour and numerous shops to visit. On the whole a very enjoyable break slightly marred only by our selfish fellow guests.

Just back from 10 days at Rio Playa Blanca,we had a fantastic holiday there.
Accommodation was very clean and spacious,we had the air con switched on high so it filtered out into the living room where our sons slept on sofa beds.We spent hardly any time in our bungalow- there was so much to see and do.
The food was brilliant so much choice and local dishes to try as well as chips and pizza for fussy 7 year olds ;-).Being peak season we did learn to mark our table by day two with a fleece etc or the efficient waiters would come and clear the table while we were all up choosing our next course and find people already sitting at our table on our return!
entertainment began at 10.30am with the good morning song,we are still humming it,a great varied list of things plus the mini and maxi clubs which both my sons enjoyed,10.30-12.30 they happily went along to see the wonderful lady called Maria for making painting and games.in the afternoon the club runs from 3-5pm,water fights races and sports or they can play in the sand park which has a lovely canopy.
The waterpark which we thought was included in our price we payed, turned out to be extra,85 euros for three daily visits,we went once on the bus shuttle and had lunch there, very busy and my sons being 6 and 7 the large slides were a bit scary but the children's pool was fun just being August no beds to sit at so we hovered around until we found two.We didn't return for a second and third day as there was plenty to do at Rio.
The nearby Flamingo beach is beautiful and we took an evening stroll along the path leading into the harbour with lots of gifts shops bars and cafés you can get cheaper priced excursions too,we chose the submarine tour which was excellent .
The pool was cool but the heat soon warmed it up and we were always in it,adult aerobics water polo etc if you wanted to join in.
After three days of no sun-beds by the shallow end of the pool we reluctantly joined the early risers to reserve a bed with a towel- nice think beach towels can be hired for 10 euros during your stay.I agree with the comments nicer beds would be wonderful, but I think to put more rows of beds would feel to closed in.
Evening entertainment for us was perfect,8.30 mini disco then a various child show, owl company was very good. Then at 10om messing about on stage with 'mr Rio completion or a dance competition was hilarious with a few cocktails,we found the bar staff lovely, slight queue at peek times, but nothing like living in London. The stage being outside you will need a jumper once the sun sets as it does get chilly. The area with outside tables could do with a revamp, nicer seats with cushions and maybe some fairy lights and a lantern on the tables, people tended to dress up for the evening then to just sit at a plastic table in the dark was a shame.
I must finish by saying the animation team that start at 10.30 am till 11pm are amazing, they never tired of smiling dancing playing with the children.Nicholas, Amy Luke and Maria- there are a couple more we didn't get to know so well.Thank you for all your dedication and making our family holiday perfect,we shall definitely be back.

Dear Linda I,

Thank you for having been our guests and for sharing your valuable feedback.

We are glad that your family thoroughly enjoyed their stay and that our animation team was able to make your holiday perfect - a great motivation for all of us!

It is a pleasure to read that you appreciated the quality and variety of our cuisine. We have noted your remark on our "too efficient" waiters and will try to solve this issue!

We are also trying to solve the issue with the reserved sunbeds. As we have a policy not to reserve sunbeds, we encourage guests who can't find any free beds to contact our pool staff, who will be more than happy to assist with either removing towels from unused beds or adding additional sunbeds.

Thank you again for your wonderful motivation feedback which helps us to optimize the guest experience day by day. Of course we will pass on your praising words to Nicholas and his Team!

We truly hope to have the privilege of welcoming your family back for another excellent holiday in Lanzarote.

With kind regards,

We have just stayed at the Rio Playa Blanca for one week. It represents good value for money. Our bungalow was in good order with no problems at all and was serviced daily by friendly staff. The outdoor areas are very clean and well kept, yes there is a shortage of sun beds and yes people do get up at first light to claim theirs - which is annoying. The food was plentiful and there was something for everyone, my only comment would be they should provide less cake and mousse type dessert options and a better selection of fresh fruit. The staff were friendly and helpful, wifi is pretty non existent but we weren't overly concerned about that. Its a short walk over the road to the promenade along to Playa Blanca in the evening, a very pleasant walk and if you don't fancy the walk back then a taxi for four cost us on average 4 euros. All in all a good hotel for what it costs to stay there.

Room Tip: The bungalows are all in lovely grounds surrounding the main pool area, we stayed in 1179 which was...

Right where do we start?

As a family of 4 we have just returned and have a few items we feel potential visitors should know. As many reviews previously we do not think this hotel is a 4 star but more a solid 3 star.

Good points are:

Bungalows - Spacious and clean, although little dated. As a family of 4 in a 1 bedroom bungalow ours was fine for us.

Pool and pool area - 3 pools one being a kids pool. Cleaned every day in and around the whole pool area.

Quality and choice of food - We found the food to of a good standard with plenty of choice. There were 3 BBQ's in our 2 week stay which were good, Chips with every meal which kept the kids happy and themed nights although you never really knew what was coming it did make a change. They fried eggs for breakfast but no omelettes which I have seen in every 4 star hotel I have ever been in.

Self service bar - This cut down on queues at the main bar.

Staff - Some were very friendly and helpful, namely all the reception staff, the life guard come general dogs body (with the pony tail) who was eager to help with the sunbed issues which I will cover a bit later on and although he gets some bad press, Juan the barman who worked hard and sometimes was just too busy to be engaging at all times.

Now the not so good points:

Sunbeds - who goes on holiday to put a towel on a sunbed at 6:30am? Sadly a lot of British do! Although it is clearly stated that any towels on beds will be removed the only guy that would take towels off was the lifeguard if there were people needing them. If the hotel operated the rules it says it does there would still be an issue; simply too many guests and not enough sunbeds.

Restaurant - As I said before the food was good and so were the choices but the actual restaurant itself is more akin to a cafe than a 4 star eatery. Not enough staff to clear and set tables, all packed elbow to elbow and queuing out of the door for your meal. Cold plates for warm food!

Snack Bar/Late Breakfast - Positioned next to the toilets (too close) these operated as self service with kids fingering the food so we kept away from it. The warm food, usually sausages, chips and cheesy bites were kept warm on electric servers.

Glasses - A bit of a strange one this but an issue with a lot of people we spoke too. Of an evening either pre or after dinner in a 4 star hotel you do not drink out of tiny disposable cups! Although if you were drinking fizzy pop, lager, wine or sangria you could simply help yourself we and many others want a good old fashioned glass. Many clients were taking the wine glasses out of the restaurant and using them outside, non of the staff stopped this so it cant be a safety issue so why not provide them to all?

Staff - Apart form the staff mentioned above a lot of the them seemed unhappy to be there unable to crack a smile. The restaurant and bar seemed under staffed maybe this was the reason?

Animation and entertainment - The animation team were okay but did not stick to the daily program which lead to 1 of my sons missing the football (the only thing he wanted to do) and when it was on it was for adults only not for teens as the schedule suggested. we spoke to the head animation guy and he didn't seem that bothered and simply suggested we make a complaint to the manager. The evening entertainment was okay with something every night. There was a lot of audience participation which seemed to suit the French guests.

The evening entertainment was outside on a stage with seating in front, as with the sunbeds too many guests and not enough tables and chairs.

WiFi - Although not a major issue for us our kids and a lot of the other younger guests did complain that it was very poor even in the reception where the router was.

Would we go back?

No! We know there are better hotels out there for the same cost but that said it wouldn't take much effort to make the step to a true 4 star.

We are a family of four, two children two adults and have just arrived back from our stay at the Rio Playa Blanca, I will be as accurate and fair as I can.
the Hotel is listed as being a four star fully inclusive apartment Hotel,
We had other family who were also staying at the hotel at the same time, which kind of helps with the review.
On arrival we were checked in and had our wrist bands applied and the receptionist gave us a full brief of the hotels facilities, we hired a safe for 16 euros for the week and an additional 10 euro deposit for the key, we were given a map and directions to our apartments which was easily found.

The room:

The apartment had a good size veranda area. With table and chairs, Now with the apartments here I think it is hit or miss as to the condition of the room you get, our relatives had exactly the same apartment style as us and it was all good and they were happy with it, but in ours a lot of fixtures and fixings were broken or faulty, within 10 minutes of moving in I had a list of stuff I wasn't happy with the air conditioning did not work was the icing on the cake it was obvious that no kind of pre-inspection had been undertaken before allowing guests to stay, I trotted off to reception to ask for a change of room but was told they were totally full and one wasn't available untill the following day, which was frustrating because I had the family itching to unpack their stuff and get on with the holiday, the receptionist sent the maintenance guy down who arrived within a few minutes, I showed him a few of the issues which included both front and back door handles loose, bathroom door not locking, one of the two main inside lights not working, small infestation of ants and of course the aircon not working very disappointing to find this at a four-star hotel within first 10 minutes, but the maintenance guy sorted one of the two handles, fixed the aircon and put some ant powder down outside and fixed the bathroom door lock, this atleast made the room inhabitable, after the maintenance guy had gone I decided to put our passports and stuff in the safe that we hired only to find out the safe was loose on its fixings, it could be moved up and down with ease and was only attached to the back of the wardrobe and could of easily of been ripped out and taken away I was thinking about a refund but thought well atleast if the valuables were stolen whilst inside the safe the insurance should cover it, so we kept the safe for that reason also I lost the will to complain because I think the maintenance guy might have a breakdown, but I give him his due he was very good, we decided to stay in the room because I didn't want to waste any more holiday time if a different room had similar issues, we spoke with our relatives and in contrast they had no issues with their room and even had a complimentary bottle of carva waiting for them in their room when they first arrived (which we didn't) the rooms had a little kitchenette so I assume at some stage these apartments were for self catering. The rooms were cleaned to a good standard every day (except Friday)with fresh towels supplied. If I had to rate the room we had I would rate it as two star, without a doubt a lack of investment in the upkeep of the apartment had taken its toll on our room.

The food:

Now here's where this Hotel is very good, the food was excellent with a very good variety and plenty of it, This Hotel must spend an absolute fortune on food!!! The food catered for everybody including vegetarians and was beautifully presented, there was a wide choice of sweets, ice creams, fruits etc
The family really enjoyed the food and getting a table wasn't difficult, drinks we're plentiful and the beer and wine was good as well as the soft drinks.
On certain nights they had themed events where an outside BBQ was set up as well as a cocktail bar these were very good as well.
The only thing that let the food down was the poolside snacks which were available during the day between meal times basically it was a hot plate glass cabinet which contained what I would suggest is the leftovers from breakfast and it was very basic self serve just a few feet away from the toilets ! I didn't use it once and told my kids not to use it either.

The staff:

Every member of staff worked very hard to make sure everybody had a good holiday, as you attended evening dinner the restaurant manager and other staff stood and greeted the guests as they arrived it was little gestures like this that made all the difference because you know the staff were really making a good effort to make the holiday that little bit special, the animation team worked hard from morning to night although the early evening show was a little repetitive but that was really aimed at the smaller children who seemed to enjoy it, we really didn't watch the evening entertainment much but did make use of the outside tables and self serve drinks machines.

The Pool:

Very good pool kids and families loved it, although the sun loungers have a system where you have to be up at the crack of dawn with a towel to reserve one, although they have a policy against doing this it isn't enforced, but if you were desperate for a sun lounger you could ask the lifeguard who would remove towels from sun loungers that had towels on but were not used, but I think this is a recipe for a bit of conflict if somebody thinks you have removed their towel!

The facilities:
Although I didn't realise it the hotel did have a little tv lounge but this was beside the stage so if you did use it you probably wouldn't hear it, the hotel had a self service laundry room, a little shop a little internet seating area where you can surf on one of the three computers available at cost and free wifi which was to be honest only effective inside the internet room, and fairly decent just outside this room and where all the teens and kids would be found surfing on their mobiles or tablet.

Overall this Hotel has a lot of potential to be good hotel with a few changes,
First thing I would say to the management is
1.) adopt a pre-use inspection of rooms prior to offering to guests
2.) a total refit of any tired rooms of which ours definitely needed.
3.)get rid of that awful snack-bar thing, build a little snack bar on the other side of the pool or use the existing manned bar and have the snacks freshly cooked to order.
4.) wifi-put a wifi extender in so it can be used around the table outside.
5.) Larger disposable plastic drink glasses ! (The Amstell ones were perfect)
6.) have atleast two staff serving drinks preferably have both bars open, one person was overwhelmed.

On the whole it was a rocky start with the room but after that the kids said at the end of the holiday how much they loved it, we enjoyed it and for the value for money was quite good and I get the feeling that the management here are constantly trying to improve things so I think this hotel will get better and better
Would we go back ? Not sure, if we were guaranteed we didn't get that same room then we probably would for the budget we had.

When we booked a return visit to HL Rio this time last year, I did so with some misgivings. I did not think that what was a great holiday could be as good second time round but I'm pleased to say that I was WRONG. Second time around was BETTER!!
When we arrived at reception on the Sunday evening we were advised to leave everything and go get some food as the dining room was soon to close. The food was greatly varied, to suit all tastes and the service excellent. When we returned to reception, Beatriz, was very pleasant and efficient in getting everyone to their rooms.
The bungalows were still the same as last year, no major improvements, but very comfortable and CLEAN. We did not have a kettle on site and when I mentioned it at reception a kettle had been brought to the bungalow before I got back. Service!!
I can honestly say that during our stay last year and this year I did not see a single cockroach - in the 8 other visits that we have been to other parts of the Canary Islands they were quite commonplace.
I was a bit worried when I saw that none of last years animation team remained. But the new ones at Rio were brilliant. Nicholas, the team leader was an absolute star, a real bundle of energy
and his attitude was infectious. Luke will be going back to college in Holland and that will be Rio's loss, he should have a great future in entertainment. His popularity with adults and kids had to be seen to be believed. The young ladies who looked after the 'minis' were excellent, again the reaction of the kids to the girls was fantastic.
The entertainment in the evenings was not great. The best evenings were the evenings that were organised and presented by the Animation team. The nightly 'Mini Disco for Kids' was great to watch just for the kids faces, big beaming smiles, though for some Dino must have looked enormous. The Burlesque Show was simply superb. The Miss Rio and Mister Rio shows were hilarious, the party games were so funny and enjoyed by all. Things like the reptile Show and the Birds of Prey are ok but once you've seen them that's it. I didn't want to see them twice. Once every two week is sufficient. Please more from the Animation team (though when they are supposed to rehearse, I don't know!!)
The daily activities were varied, from Killer Darts (dodgy Darts!) to Water Polo, how to make Sangria (thanks Nicholas!!), Air Pistol/Air Rifle shooting. Football and Table Tennis for adults and kids. Being presented with a Diploma on stage after the Mini Disco, standing beside a 4 year old who got a Diploma for face painting is just part of the magic of the Animation Team!
The perennial problem with towels on sunbeds raised its head. Everybody was doing it!! More sunbeds please and more palm shelter/umbrellas please.

First of all... I've stayed in many 3 star hotels and this is better than those so if it's not good enough for a 4*, as so many people think, then lets call it a 3*+,

We went as a family of 4 (children were 11 and 9) and we had a ball. So much so, we want to book again for next year. I've read lots of reviews and was dreading going but I found them to be far off the mark so I'll review different aspects separately. (Sorry it's long but I wanted to set some things straight).

Arrival: Our flight was delayed by 5 hours so we didn't arrive at the hotel until the early hours. On arrival we were swiftly booked in and given directions to our rooms. We were also told that they had kept the restaurant open for us and there were snacks (bread, ham, cheese etc) available to us if we wanted them. Son was too tired though so we found the room instead. We were impressed that they had food and drink ready for us though.

Room: Yes, it was basic but we only slept there so it didn't need to be anything more. We had a one bedroom bungalow with the living room set up as a bedroom for the children. Beds were made up on arrival and none of us had any problem sleeping. The bedroom is the only room that has air conditioning but if left on it did cool the living room before bed. The kitchen was very basic but we were All Inclusive so again, didn't make use of anything except the fridge to keep our water, chocolate and after-sun in! Our bathroom was large and clean with towels changed whenever we needed them (except Friday). Our room was 1018 and I think these may have been in the newer part of the complex as room 1118 (which we used to shower before we came home) was more dated and had some cosmetic issues.

Grounds: Very clean and a good layout. Numbering was confusing at first but once morning arrived we figured it out. Pool area was kept clean by the fantastically friendly lifeguard who had his work cut out on some days as people found it hard to understand that Lanzarote is windy and plastic cups aren't heavy so once a drink is finished the empty should go in the bin so it doesn't fly off. (My own bug bear) Not the hotel's fault at all as there are plenty of bins and the lifeguard empties them often.

Pool: It's big, clean and cool. What more do you want when you've been baking in 90 degree temperatures? It may be cold during the winter months but during the summer, it is perfect.

Food: As mentioned in other reviews, the food can't possibly be to everyone's taste but there was always something to eat (and I'm fussy). Available everyday in the restaurant were chips, salad, pizza and pasta but everything else was different on a daily basis. Meat/fish included chicken, pork, beef, rabbit, duck, liver, salmon, cod or calamari (fried, grilled, roasted or stewed). Some of the stews were salty though. Unlike other All Inclusive hotels though, the leftover food from breakfast / lunch wasn't recycled as some reviewers have suggested. Mexican night was fantastic and we made full use of the BBQ outside the restaurant.

Snacks: There is more choice at the sister hotels but after breakfast there was a "continental" breakfast served near the bar where you could make toasties or sandwiches and before lunch was served, this was replaced with chips and two of: pizza, sausages, fish sticks or chicken bites. Kids made full use of this so they didn't have to break from play to dry off and go into the restaurant to eat. After lunch, the ice cream freezer was rolled out and was available (again self serve) for a couple of hours before dinner.

Drinks: Again, nothing to complain about. The pool bar was open from 10am until 6pm (after which the indoor bar opened until midnight). However, as beer, fruit juice, fizzy drinks, hot drinks, wine and sangria were all available from serve yourself pumps (as well as the bar) there was very little queuing. There were a selection of cocktails available and, unlike some people have said, a wide range of spirits including irish cream (not Baileys but I wouldn't have known the difference) and flavoured liquors (mint, banana, coffee etc). All Inclusive finished at 11pm but as family, we were happy with that (or we just stocked up before 11pm.)

Animation team and entertainment: The entertainment was varied. The magic show and acrobatic show were great and the kids loved the reptile and bird shows, but there was always something to watch or join in with. We all loved the tropical party as the live band played and all the Animation team joined in and got people up dancing. A special mention has to go to Nicolas - I have never seen anyone so full of life and appear to love his job so much. He never stopped. During the day there were lots of activities going on that you could join in as you pleased. Our favourites were the rifle and pistol shooting but remember to take a hat along as the area these are done is a real suntrap and the only shade is a parasol. There are no activities on a Sunday (the team need one day off) but there is a band plays at night. They are lovely and even took a request of the Macarena for us to dance to before they finished. Thank you La Viva.

Water park: The bus runs 3 times a day to and from the park but it's 5 minutes walk. It's not large (I've attached a photo) but great fun. The dinghy ride is really fast though if 2 adults go down together. You have been warned! (Lie back, you go faster still - but don't expect to emerge from the slide still on the dinghy.) Soft drinks are available from the vendors in the waterpark, no alcohol, but the hotel bar isn't far off if you fancy a pina colada or a snack. There are also Go Carts (€8 for 12 minutes) and trampolines, but it was too windy for the trampolines.

The only bug bear I have was the amount of money I put into the pool table at the hotel! The kids congregated there at night though and it kept them out of trouble.

I know it's a long review, but I really wanted to put some things straight. We had a good old chuckle about some of the reviews we'd read whilst we were sat around the pool and have come to the conclusion that some people will give a bad review if their flip flops were too tight. Yes, everyone is allowed an opinion and our opinion is that this was a great place to holiday and I would happily go back. Thank you for a great holiday.

Room Tip: Some people mention the smell around some rooms. We stayed in 1018 and the only time we smelled any...
