“A few downsides.......”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

Arrived on 11/5/14, welcome was very good, helpful and cheerful reception staff. We were in room 447, super sea view room. Room was spotless, and good size, nice bathroom. Room was cleaned every day, linen changed as often as you requested. Well done Maria, our room maid. All areas around the hotel were very clean, pool had plenty of beds available most of the day. Restaurant was buffet style for all meals. So much to our surprise, gents have to wear long trousers for dinner. When the ladies can get away with wearing cheek showing cut off shorts, strange to say the least. And you dont even receive table service on all inc, not even water poured for you. That sad, food was varied and of a good standard. I had to buy some cheap trousers to gain access to dinner, then once meal was over, back into my tidy, tailored shorts for the rest of the evening. Lots of chipped crockery too. Thats one downside, the other is the air con in our room, or the lack of. We travelled with friends whose air con did not work either. The problem was reported for both our rooms several times and maintenance sent to sort. It didnt. Seemed as if its an air circulating system, not cooling. Animation team were cheery bunch, but not pushy to get you to join in, Billy is as mad as a box of frogs, well done all of them. Evening shows were ok, some better than others,TANSANNIA were excellent. But all in all, the hotel and staff were very good, and a few problems, that didnt spoil our holiday. Thank you.

Room Tip: Would pay the extra for sea view. We were in room 447, excellent outlook.

This was our first time staying in Playa Blanca as a family of three (me, the missus and a five yr old son) and the whole experience with Jet2 Holidays was fantastic from start to finish. Upon arrival at the hotel at around 7.30pm we checked in with the very friendly reception staff and were allocated room 501, on floor five facing the side road with a view of the sea to the left and Fuertaventura away in the distance. Room was very quiet even though in was right next to the lift, corridors were carpeted which kept the noise down. The room itself was perfectly acceptable and was cleaned every day with fresh towels provided. The "mini-bar" was a small fridge under the dressing table (this could be stocked up with a list of extras payable locally) which we used to keep our daily water bottle and chocolates cold!! (nice touch) and the towel sculptures were an added bonus (we had a boat in the bathroom and a couple of swans on arrival!) The beds are hard - be warned!! If you dont like an ortho matress you may struggle as the mattresses were like planks! The fold out sofa bed was ok, with a very soft spot at the very bottom but my son slept like a log every night but that may have been the Mini-Disco! Chi-chi Wah and Veo Veo were always kid pleasers!

Food was very good and always varied, breakfast pancakes and eggs/omelettes cooked to order - just a word of warning to the "Brits" - if you like your eggs well cooked on top ask the plancha chef to flip it for a couple of seconds, rather than walking away grumbling a complaint about under-done eggs!! Grill cooking each evening at dinner was nice, with chicken, pork, lamb, squid, veal...always hot and very tasty. The only let down was cold plates and food being left out a bit too long to go a bit cold...a quick blast in the microwave sorted that out but shouldn't be needed in a hotel of this standard. Staff were fantastic and very friendly..espicially when my son practiced his Spanish...special mention and a big "Gracias" to Nelson in the terrace bar (Hola Amigo! How is the fishing going??) for sorting out some ice and a napkin when the little one banged his head one night. Also Luis and the whole Animacion Team (Billy, Laura, Sol, Maria and Ellen) who kept things interesting during the day and evening. The Mama-Mia show had to be seen to be believed..honestly....never seen or heard anything quite like it!!

Great location with good walks either side of the hotel..Rubicon Marina is a 15 minute walk and Playa Dorada beach about a further 15 minutes from that. Very good courtesy bus service operates four times each day into Playa Blanca...just get the info from reception.

All in all a great weeks AI holiday at a lovely hotel in a great spot. Will be back again someday.

Me and my partner stayed at the iberostar hotel for 10 nights. On arrival you are welcomed by the friendly staff on reception they have a porter if you would like help with your luggage as well. The hotel itself is very clean and the food is good they have a very good selection at breakfast and dinner I don't know about lunch as I was only half board. The drinks at the hotel are more expensive then the local bars. The rooms at the hotel are cleaned every day the hotel has two swimming pools, gym , indoor sauna and steam room. The opening hours for the gym and indoor sauna is 10.30 am to 18.30 pm which I think could be open for longer during the high peak season. They also have a fitness timetable with activities to do during the day they also have a children's and adults entertainment club in the evening. The hotel is about 30 minute walk to Playa Blanca which is costal so take sone good waljing shoes with you! There is also a marina and is a 20 minute walk fron the hotel.. the hotel also rubs a free courtesy bus and you also can get a number 30 bus into Playa Blanca. There's not much to do in the surrounding area all the main bars are in Playa Blanca we stayed in an apartment which is very nice come with a kitchen area but bring your own travel kettle as they don't provide one in the apartment. The apartment also cones with a rear and front balcony the hotel also has half hour wfi for free which you have to gi to the lobby to activate. I enjoyedmy stay at the hotel my only suggestion would be to go all inclusive as there is not much to do in the area.

Lovely hotel and very quiet although we were there the week before the schools stopped for the Easter holidays so it might have been a different story the following week! We had a sea facing room which i would recommend. These rooms overlooked the sea and the promenade which was right outside the room - well worth the extra £40 for the lovely sea view and you could watch the constant flow of people going back and forth. The layout of the hotel means when you enter from the main drop off point into the reception you are actually on the 3rd floor so although our room was on the 2nd floor we had to go down a floor and found ourselves at ground level - not great if you want privacy as the promenade goes right along the front of your room and also you don't get a sea view unless you are standing up! We asked to get moved to a higher floor and although this was OK it took until day 3 to eventually get moved We ended up on the 4th floor of the same block and the room was ideal. These rooms had sun in the morning up until early afternoon and were then in the shade. The room itself was roomy and very clean. The pool area and surrounding terraces were lovely - the pools were too cold to go in when we were there but looked great. Terrace overlooking the sea had a great breeze if it got a bit too hot and gave wonderful views. Meals were fine, breakfast was the usual buffet-style with everything you could want to eat and drink. We stayed half board and the evening meal was nice and varied with different 'specials' each night but it was nothing spectacular. Unless you were AI no drinks were provided with the evening meal, not even water or soft drinks although these could be purchased. Cash wasn't accepted in the dining room or in the bar - all purchases had to go on your bill. Plenty of daytime and evening entertainment very varied. Staff came around the pool area each day with complimentary fruit and in the evening came round the bar with complimentary crisps or cocktails etc. All in all we had a great relaxing break at this hotel and for our first time in Lanzarote we weren't disappointed and would return. One grumble is the wi-fi - it is only accessible around the 3rd floor bar/terrace area. 30 minutes after you connect, you are automatically dis-connected and that's you for 24 hours! Any hotels I have stayed in have unlimited Wi-Fi although sometimes only from one location so I found this rather disappointing. Considering all local bars, cafes and restaurants provide free Wi-Fi it's a pity the hotel couldn't do the same.

Room Tip: Sea view worth the extra but get a higher floor - 2nd floor is actually at promenade level

We stayed here end of April and we arrived in the evening. We were the only ones to get of the transfer bus so we were the only ones to be checking in. Paul was on the desk and greeted us with a lovely smile and cheery banter, but as he was on his own we had to find our room for ourselves. Room 527, just one floor up from reception. Room was very clean and comfortable. No welcome drink in the mini bar, in fact the mini bar was empty and the welcome drink at reception was only water. View from room was of the parking area in the side street, although if you lent out on the balcony, you could see the sea. The side road was very quite though as it was not for through traffic. Toilet was clean and the shower curtain also nice and clean, you had to stand in the bath to have a shower though, and just a shower cap each and bar of soap each in the way of complimentary items.
Restaurant was pleasant, we were shown to a table and ordered drinks, we were on a half board tarrif, so although there was wine and water etc on tap, we soon found out we were not allowed to touch and had to pay for our water etc., Buffett was good, plenty of choice but not that hot. Every evening meal seemed to be the same for us all week with the exception of one night when they did some Japanese dishes. Breakfast again had plenty of choices, for two people you got one pot of coffee, but as I am a tea drinker, I had to fend for myself and there was plenty of varieties but all pretty tasteless. I brought my own teabag to breakfast every morning. Cant say about lunch as we were never in the hotel at lunch times.
Lounge was comfortable, with plenty of seats and small tables, bar was always busy as there wasn't much else to do in the hotel, which was disappointing. evening show downstairs in the basement only went on for an hour for the adults. Couple of reasonable shows, otherwise forget it!
Poolside was very nice, and yes there was always a sunbed to be had, the hotel claimed that no one was allowed to save beds, but they did. So I wonder if there are sunbeds to be had main season?
Outside of the hotel there was not a lot of life!!! We had a pleasant long lazy stroll into the Rubicon Marina approximately ten minutes walk, plenty of benches along the route. Then another 15 minutes walk at least to Playa Blanca. In the other direction apart from a couple of hotels there was empty building sites. If you make towards the hotel on the hill you could then walk across the hill to Papagayo Beach and its golden sands. Otherwise the beach nearest the hotel is simply not worth going on.
Lazy, lazy holiday with plenty of walking and not a lot to see, lovely to start with then got a bit bored with nothing to do.

Room Tip: Room 527 was on the side of the hotel overlooking the streets and parking area. The balcony was in f...

This was our third visit to the Iberostar Papagayo. We love the location, pleasant staff and great food, but oh dear, the rooms really do let this hotel down.

We paid extra to have a full sea view once again and this time we were allocated room 441. As ever, it was spotlessly clean (other than the chair), but the furniture is in dire need of renovation and refurbishment. The bottom of our dressing table (as the picture shows) was disintegrating and quite disgusting. We were unable to change rooms as the hotel was full. The hotel has refurbished reception, the bar and the sun loungers around the pool, but the rooms are as built over 10 years ago and they show it. In addition, and although we hardly watch it, the TV is huge & ancient taking up most of the dressing table. We have also noted in the last 3 visits that the air-con never seems to work – yes, you can hear the noise of the fan but it never cools the room down. This has happened on all 3 of our stays at this hotel. A few other points which we find irritating: The lack of free wifi throughout the hotel. You are allowed 30 minutes free in the bar area only, but we feel that wifi should be free in all areas throughout your stay. We have been to hotels in Vietnam, India, Cambodia, Malaysia and the US and the wifi is completely free, so why not here? A further annoyance is the inability to change pool towels. You are only able to change your towel between 10am to 1pm – so if you have a swim after that and your towel is wet, then you must dry it yourself – no chance of a towel change. We think these are serious shortcomings for a hotel that purports to be (and charges) four star prices.

We will certainly return to Playa Blanca, but not to the Iberostar until the rooms are refurbished. Next time will look for a genuine 4 star experience.

Dear Guest,

We first would like to thank you for your several visits to our IBEROSTAR Papagayo hotel as well as for the time you spent to share your feelings about your latest holiday among us; we sincerely regret that we fell short of your expectations from past visits.

We took good note of your comment related to the dressing table and lament not being informed about it immediately as we would have sent a technician to have a check; for future occasions please do not hesitate to contact our reception desk to point out any imperfection, we will be pleased to assist you.

Regarding our air conditioning system it is centralized and turned on and off depending on the outdoor temperatures.

The Wi Fi charges are decided on a global level by our central office, we will pass on your comments for information.

As you well say, the pool towels service by the pool is ensured from 10.00 am to 13.00 pm; however, after that time slot they can be returned and changed at our reception desk upon request.

On the other hand, we thank you for pointing out the cleanliness of our overall installations as well as the genuine friendliness of our staff, the quality of our extensive buffets and our prime location, with amazing Ocean views.

Our goal is to assure our guests feel comfortable and fully enjoy their visits. We are eager to regain your confidence during another occasion if you gave us that chance.

Sincere Regards,

Excellent hotel in a superb location overlooking the sea front.

15 mins walk to marina which is beautiful, nothing else around hotel apart from one supermarket, although shuttle bus available to Playa Blanca centre 4 times a day.
Friendly helpful staff, excellent food choice.

Only downside poor air conditioning, mentioned to reception who sent maintenance to check out but even on full only made a whirring noise and nothing else. We preferred to leave balcony doors open
