“Royal Marina Gardens - for chilled out hols, culture, beach and Barcelona”
Reviewed 2 October 2007

My husband and I wanted a reasonable holiday close to the beach but not too far off the beaten track. Since I had visited Castelldefels before when I was a child, we decided to go again 27 years later.
After some research, we found the Royal Marina Gardens Apartments and as we had such a lovely time there, I thought I would spread the word.

It is in a very quiet part of town on the beach side, surrounded by posh properties and electric gates, protecting the villas. There may be a whiff of celebrity round these parts, so if you want buzzing streets lined with nightclubs etc, you may be in the wrong place.

For us however, it was ideal. The beach is literally 2 mins away and the bus stop to Barcelona about 50 metres outside the front door, which takes you right into the heart of Barcelona, Plaza Catalunya, within 40 mins. Tickets are 1.25 EUR but if you buy a ten journey ticket (approx EUR 6.80) at the newsagents/tobacconist, you save money as they can obviously be stamped 10 times.

Our apartment was on the 2nd floor, which was a medium sized property with double bedroom, separate toilet, a bathroom with basin and shower, and a living room/kitchenette that had a two hob electric cooker, microwave and the all important fridge for the beers.
The facilities are very good, too, although there is no bar, but that did not bother us. If you want a bar, you need to walk either along the beachfront or the next road in, which is Passeo Maritim. Along there, you'll find plenty of choice.

Prices per night or week are reasonable, the staff are excellent, very friendly and helpful. We couldn't fault them. The receptionist Claudia stood out the most, so if you are a German (or English) speaker, she is the person to ask. Otherwise you can check out your Spanish as there are plenty of opportunities.
There is a swimming pool and another block of apartments out the back, all of which are kept very clean and tidy.

So, if you want the best of both worlds, cultural city and a small, touristy place mainly with Spanish holiday makers, why not give Castelldefels and the Royal Marina Gardens a go? I'm sure you'll be very happy there.

The nearest shopping centre with supermarket is a bit of a walk (or two stops on the bus) away. However, there's a great deal of choice, so definitely worth a look.
