This restaurant used to be a favourite with passing cyclists, sales reps and tourists. At 11.95 euros per head the Menu of the Day was cheap and cheerful. Service and atmosphere were great. Sadly its recently changed hands, gone are the tables where you could lunch outside or inside by the window to enjoy the viewing the passers by. Now its been given a make over and the daily menu price has risen to 18 euros. For this you get 3 courses, water and a glass of wine (yes only one glass), tax included. Coffee is extra, taking lunch for 2 to just shy of 40 euros.
There were 3 choices for each course. Before the food arrived we were bombarded with bread and olives. Water came in a large jug with ice and flowers in it; very pretty. For the first course I chose grilled vegetables which were tasty, my partner had gaspacho, good but with only greasy croutons and a bit of chopped onion to accompany it (there should be chopped peppers and cucumber as well). Then he had a steak which was tough and I had a rice dish which was over cooked and pretty tasteless with some unidentifiable meat in it. My dessert was tart tatin which had soggy pastry and my partner had crema catalana which had a good crust but was grainy and had no flavour. Surely it doesn't take much to add the citrus rinds and cinnamon which are an integral part of this dish?
It was hot today but the air conditioning was not turned on and all the doors to the outside terrace were open.
I'm not sure who this restaurant is aimed at now. There is a lot of good competition in the area.
For almost the same price (19.50) you can have the set menu just down the road at Les Panolles. There are more menu choices there & the food is tastier.
Glad we tried Font Picant under its new ownership but we won't be going back.
