Europe has many hidden gems and the Krone Hotel & Restaurant in Buochs, Switzerland is definitely one of them. If you have need of a place to stay in the Stans area, I can highly recommend the Krone.
I stayed at the Krone for approximately two months starting in January 2014. Beginning with the moment I arrived on the second of January, at a time when everything was still closed for the holidays, the Krone staff was right there to help and I settled in easily and comfortably.
A full service hotel, the Krone boasts a warm and inviting restaurant and bar which features traditional Swiss dishes of the region. Of note is its popularity with the local residents - always a clue to the savvy traveler that tourism is not the mainstay of an establishment's success. A reservation for dinner - particularly on a Friday or Saturday night, or when the theater across the street has a show playing - is often a good idea, so ask ahead. The Krone also has a rather popular Sunday brunch available.
The faces of the Krone are Peter, Daniel and Marianne - three of the most friendly and genuinely helpful people one could hope to have as hosts. All are fluent in English so for those of us who don't speak Schweizerdeutsch - the major German dialect of the region - communication is easy and effective. All are very knowledgeable about the local area and creative with their recommendations.
There are three grocery stores within walking distance of the Krone - one, a Spar, is across the street - and is the only one open on Sundays (until 1 PM). The other two - a Migros and a COOP - are both about a 10 minute walk down Ennetburgerstrasse - should you need anything like a snack, a band aid, or some shampoo. The COOP has some very good wines at reasonable prices. Migros does not sell alcoholic beverages.
Public transportation is easy to use and is less than a two minute walk from the front door of the Krone. The 'Buochs, Post' (Post Bus) stop has at least two buses an hour beginning shortly after 5 AM until just after midnight every day of the week - including Sundays. The number 311 bus will have you at the Stans train station (bahnhof) in 12 minutes or less. From there you can board a train to Lucern or to the picturesque resort town of Engleberg.
Arrivals of both buses and trains are coordinated so that one walks off of one and gets right on to the other with virtually no waiting before departure - and yes, you really can set your watch by the departure of a Swiss train. Buses and trains are clean and the staff are friendly and courteous. One should never hesitate to take public transportation in Switzerland - it is one place where it REALLY works.
But if you have a car ... the Krone can help with that too. They have quite a number of parking places for use by hotel guests.
Whether you plan a short or an extended stay in central Switzerland the Krone will meet or exceed your needs and expectations. I'm pleased to be able to recommend the Krone Hotel and Restaurant to anyone looking for a nice place to stay while on business or vacation.
