“"Wow, brilliant"”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

Right from the moment we arrived and were greated by the 4 resident cockerals we knew we were going to be in for a pleasant stay. Pentillie has an interesting story to it and part owner "Sammie" was happy to share it with us. The castle is perfectly located and overlooks the Tamar Valley & River. We stayed in the Dewhurst Luxury Four Poster Suite, and it is Luxury, with plenty of room and a very pleasant view. Breakfast was 1st class as was the service by all staff. Make sure you take a walk through the gardens and if your lucky the 2 resident black labradors will follow you or should I say guide you.

Grant S

Room Tip: Take a walk to the Mausoleum, and to the Bathing Hut.

The reviewer, nomadonholiday, sums this place up so well there's isn't much
else for me to say regarding room and facilities.
Follow the directions given by the hotel and you should be fine.Don't expect to
see a large sign on the main road advertising the hotel though. There is a small one which could be overlooked.
Entering the drive to the hotel you go alongside the top of a deep, verdant
valley and feel immediately at peace - well we did. The road splits, as the landscape opens out, and curves round to the courtyard in front of the 'castle'.
We were greeted warmly by four colourful, strutting characters, who were
either curious as to what we looked like, or were after some food, that is,
the cockerels. They became known to us as the Four Musketeers.
We received an even warmer welcome at reception from the staff and family
who own it. We immediately felt at home.
Once settled, we decided to go for a walk up to the Mausoleum through the woods. One of the labradors decided to join us and, I'll swear, knew where
we were going and guided us there. It stopped at every junction in the path,
waited and then trotted on as if to say "follow me"! When we arrived there
the view was idyllic and stunning over the fields and valley, down to the snaking Tamar River. So, we were smitten on our first day.
Breakfast is super. Choices of cereals, fruit and juices and a freshly cooked
one too if you wish - and you should!
We were in the Howard room which was comfortable and, being on the corner of the building, had a view out of both the front and the side. The
front faces the woods, the side you can see across a couple of the hotel's
rooftops to the river. Should we go again, I'd select, literally, a landscape room looking out over the rear. The view is across the valley and river.
Only a couple of quibbles. The room backing onto Howard has its shower on the other side of the wall which backs onto the bedhead. So, anyone having
an early shower in there may wake you up. And, thereby, that leads me to
waking up. Our Four Musketeers would start communicating at about 5am
and have a chat over breakfast for about 3 hours, so I was woken up early
most mornings. They come into the Estate Office yard below the room and
probably discuss the lack of good corn for breakfast. Deliveries are also made
in that yard, which may also cause some disturbance in that room.
To counter all that, ear-plugs are provided in the bedside cabinet. That sums
it up, they think of everything here!

Room Tip: One at the rear looking out over the fantastic landscape. They may be more expensive, but worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Pentillie. We're glad that you felt at home and Khan and Charfu were such good guides - they've had plenty of practice!

Unfortunately the four musketeers have now become three due to a plucky fox. We have been trying to encourage them further away from the Castle so they don't disturb guests early in the morning - it is an ongoing project!

We will certainly take your feedback onboard regarding deliveries in the Estate Office courtyard and limit any disturbance in the future.

The Coryton, Tillie and Dewhurst Suites all await your return in the meantime!

We look forward to hearing from you again.

Kind regards,
Kate, and team Pentillie

This establishment should be the benchmark for all other hotels, B & B's.
The property has a fantastic history, told by staff, booklets and pictures hung around every wall.
Beautifully and tastefully decorated bedrooms, corridors, staircases, sitting rooms and dining rooms.
Supreme comfort and quality everywhere. Beautiful bed linen, bath towels, robes.
Awesome grounds and facilities.
Every member of staff(even there gardener Ted - who actually owns the place) is helpful to the n'th degree. They are all so positive and cheerful.
Admittedly they do not provide evening dinners, but they DO, in their own way, which actually works a treat. hey provide the meal, you heat it up in the Aga and hey presto, your evening meal. you have access to the whole kitchen, tea/coffee etc.(which is also available in your rooms) There is an honesty bar for drinks and wine.
The heated outdoor swimming pool is exactly that, heated! and put to good use. Plenty of outside sitting ares for alfresco dining too.
For animal lovers, the two house labs are great fun, along with the three boys who rule the roost, the cockerels.
There is a bell tower too, which chimes the hours(but dot worry,it is not sufficient to disturb your sleep).
An awesome property in an awesome location.
Would I stay again, most definitely!

Room Tip: Any and all.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your lovely feedback on your stay at Pentillie. Ted seems to be a 'jack of all trades'!! We're delighted that you had such an enjoyable stay here and were able to tuck into our increasingly popular DIY suppers.

Our menagerie of 'pets' seems to be growing each year - although the peacocks now seem to favour the Kitchen Garden rather than the gardens near us.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Best wishes,
Kate, and team Pentillie.

One of my sons recently commented on the fact that my ratings tend to be on the very good or excellent side rather than on the poor or terrible side. My reply was of course that it's not surprising as we always choose our B&B:s and hotels based on tripadvisor. Pentillie Castle is no exception it is indeed a wonderful place. Everything has already been said about this amazing B&B. The rooms are exquisite with all possible enmities, including real ground coffee and a very interesting DVD describing the fascinating story of the castle, its renovation etc. We were upgraded, and when arriving were served tea and scones. The surroundings are amazing. You feel like you are in another century or in the TV-series Down Town Abby, when walking down to the river or to the mausoleum. This is the perfect place to host a big party like a wedding or a birthday party. My wife and I wish the owners of Pentillie Castle good luck in the future and needless to say we would love to come back again.

We can only say that our stay was most enjoyable. The rooms were as expected, as we have been staying at Pentillie Castle in 2013. The location is sensational. The personal, service and
all the people involved looking after the guests are very friendly, helpful and warm and welcoming. Our stay was almost like coming home, or staying with friends. There is nothing at
all that is wanting or lacing. A place we are looking forward to return back to.

The visit is like staying in a friends' country house. Staff are helpful and friendly and there is such a relaxed atmosphere. The bedroom contains all you might need and we enjoyed the home made shortbread. I enjoyed reading the history of the house and family I found there. The bathroom was a revelation! The view from both was beautiful looking across the garden to the winding river and the Devon countryside on the other side. The breakfast menu gave ample choice and the home made marmalade was delicious. The bacon was like bacon used to be. My only regret was that I could not stay longer.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a river view

Only stayed one night but it was an exceptional sojourn. Everything was very well done - lovely, attentive staff, good food, beautiful bedroom, house and one of the prettiest corners of Cornwall. We felt really at home and thoroughly spoilt and rested. The weather was amazing and we even went in the heated outdoor pool. A real treat. Will definitely return and hopefully for longer. It would be a wonderful place for a family celebration or wedding too. Very interesting history of the castle and its owners.

Room Tip: Cockerels at 4.30 am meant I had to mark down sleep quality but that's the countryside for you...
