Well converted monastic abbey, with good conference facilities and comfortable rooms. Two-tiered room pricing structure: some rooms are ensuite and others share a communal bathroom. Spotlessly clean and secure.

Breakfast is buffet style, with a wide choice, and is served in either the large ground floor room, or in the smaller room next to the (excellent) bar. The abbey brew their own beer, which should definitely be tried! We booked an evening meal here, which was tasty, and the service was excellent.

Kerkrade town itself is about a twenty minute walk away.

This old abbey is refurbished to a modern conference place. Which breathe quiet and has a nice atmosphere. The modern rooms are spacy and well equipted with everything you need and has a good bathroom. We stayed on the top level of the main building. The wall's are thin and could be noisy, But there are a lot of peace seekers in this place. The toplevel-rooms could be warm in a hot summer. There is no airco. No balcony's and there are different kinds of rooms and the cheapest could be basic only for a few euro's less.

The breakfast was european and tasted OK, but the waiters could not follow the crowd. Or there were too little waiters. In the centre courtyard there is a big terras and in the main building the sell their own beer. Awesome! The restaurant in the cellar is beautiful and serves good food, but not much choice on the menu. Better choice is Ristorante Giuseppe on the marketplace in the centre of Kerkrade. Only 2 km away. Nice place for a weekend and I wil defenitly go back here.

Room Tip: do not choose the cheapest room, because they are very basic. Ristorante Giuseppe on the market in Kerkrade has very good food.

I stayed for a conference and was struck by the historic value of the building (be sure to book a tour). The church of the 12th century and the crypt within was a pleasant surprise. My room was small, being a former monk-cell, but furnished in a modern way with a pleasant bathroom.
Breakfast was OK, and also the bar with 'home'-brewed beer was cozy.

Room was basic but had everything you need. Excellent shower and good storage facilities so you can actually unpack all your stuff. The breakfast was good as there was plenty of space, even if you went down towards the end of the available time. Tables were cleared immediately so you didn't have to sit looking at other people's debris. The buffet was sensibly arranged so there were no log jams or unnecessary queues. The restaurant provided a good evening meal but is shut on Sundays. However, you can walk to Germany in about 10 minutes and get dinner there very easily! It is a fun location right on the border and you can quickly get to Achen,Heerlen and Gaia zoo as well as the remnants of the Siegfried Line. Don't forget to visit the abbey church while you are staying there. It is a special experience to stay in an old abbey and although it is obviously heavily restored it has been very tastefully and sensitively done. The only negative point was the wifi. The connection was rather weak in our room so we had to sit in the public areas to use it properly (but I appreciate the irony of complaining about the wifi in an 11th century abbey)

The quality of the rooms is equal to a standard Ibis. Logical because they are made in each of the normal monk's cells. Be carefull though, because there are two types of rooms: Cat. A and B. The cheaper category has no bathroom, and you have to go to a communal bathroom somewhere in the corridor. Our bathroom was quite modern and very much OK. Beware that the rooms are not soundproof. The beds are standard dutch: long enough for a tall person, but only 80 cm wide (max).
The Brasserie De Verloren Zoon is OK, and exactly what is says: a brasserie and not a gourmet restaurant. The cadre is nice (vaulted ceiling), and they have their own excellent beer.
Negative is the fact that the abbey is too large to heat properly and as such rather cold.

Room Tip: take the rooms with a bathroom.
