“A great place to stay and explore the surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

We stayed for 2 two nights there and I can only say the place and the owner are great.

The small hotel lays hidden from the street in a spacious garden, with a small parking lot for a few cars, but as there are not so many rooms either, this is not a problem.
The overall atmosphere was really more like it was a home for you and not an anonymous hotel for large masses. We were greeted by the owner himself, he was helpful with information about where to eat (anyway just a handful of options in the small town) and he gave us map with hiking routes as well.

Regarding our room - it was very nice, big, clean and overall a great place to relax after a long day outside. In a rather hot summer day the tile floors seemed more as an advantage opposite the complaints in other reviews. There was an large carpet as well, guess as an response to this complaint, if someone gets too cold feet :D Free WiFi was also available, quality although average (at least with a smartphone, tabled worked better, but then again, go out and stop browsing, you are on a vacation for gods sake).

As for noise levels, it was very quiet, except the church bell, that rang every hour even during the night, but this, I believe, can be heard in the whole town and even the surroundings. In the second night, after a 20+ km hike, this was not a problem anyway :D

And of top of all - I had some issues whit my cars brakes on the way to the hotel, so I asked the owner, if he could recommend an garage in town to fix the problem, and after a while on the phone (one garage busy, one too far) we ended up at his home and fixing it by ourselves, to get me moving again. Thank you, Giels again for this :)

So if you like a very personal approach and a cosy atmosphere in a very nice town, I would highly recommend this place to you, and I would definitely choose it again, If I go to this area.

I booked this hotel through Booking.com based on a few exalted reviews here and there, but our experience did not match the “superb” or “exceptional” level. We were coming from Ghent to stay in this hotel for one night, with a purpose of visiting Aachen Charlemagne cathedral, which was only 30 minutes away by car. I wished for a comfortable place in countryside, away from the city noise and with the easy car parking. Villa Commandeur proved satisfactory for the purpose, but certainly not outstanding.

Overall it is a sort of place where the owner should spend a night or two in a guest room himself to get a clear picture of the comforts (or lack thereof) of a room in his hotel. I believe a hotel room should be more than a storage place for robots; yet I start with positives:

1) The room was spotlessly clean, with a large terrace. The day we arrived it was drizzle – well, it’s Netherlands, not Capri, so alas the terrace was not too useful.
2) The location of the building in its own garden was very quiet. However the noise from other rooms was clearly heard (another guest’s coughing woke us up in the middle of the night). Hence, there is no soundproofing, although the hotel is fairly new.
3) The double bed was comfortable; alas, it had individual blankets German-style.
4) The shower was good; no bathtub. Towels were scarce and thin, tiled floor very cold.
5) The breakfast was truly excellent – eggs, breads, fruit, coffee, etc. The dining area was very stylish, albeit in rooms the same metallic-grey décor felt cold and industrial.
6) The location of the hotel is in a very beautiful part of Netherlands, in a hilly area and a nice little town of Mechelen. It was a pleasant 30 minute drive to Aachen, the goal of our visit.
7) There was ample private parking in the garden, very safe and convenient.
8) The communication and check-in/out was very efficient.

Disappointments:

1) There was no thermostat or else to adjust the heating in the room. When we arrived it was cold, and the room was barely warm. There was no good heating in the bathroom, too, and it was very uncomfortable to take a shower in the cold bathroom.
2) The room had no bed rags, no shower mats and the floor was tile. It felt very cold in the beginning of May; the décor of the room is in grey and angular, and coupled with grey skies and cold tile floor all that made it felt inhospitable; ironically, it did feel cold indeed! The owner could add some cozying up to the room to make it feel more liveable.
3) WiFi did not work in the room; I had to go downstairs to the dining room on a very steep granite slippery stairs with the computer in my hands to use internet.
4) The stair to the room is steep.

I must say that definitely the owner made a great effort to make his place a good hotel, the breakfast deserves a special praise. Perhaps the hotel’s minimalist design was influenced by Limbourg miniaturists, while the result is anti-opulent, and our hours there could not be possibly described as "Les Très Riches Heures".

There is no doubt that many travelers with cubist-inspired aesthetics will be happy to stay here, in a new hotel with the very modern style of accommodation. For us, though, it felt too empty and cold, we prefer more cozy and humane approach to the hotel experience. One night was certainly enough for a stay in a masterpiece of Limbourg minimalism of Villa Commandeur.
