“Weesp, the closest fortified town to Amsterdam.”
Reviewed 12 March 2009

About 15 km southeast of Amsterdam, and only 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam Central Station, the small town of Weesp. With an old fortified center and narrow streets, a gothic 15th century church with a tower of around 1200, a more recent town hall (1776) with local historical museum, 3 windmills in town and others in the countryside around.
Plenty of cafés and restaurants, and 1 hotel in the centre.
Weesp is an excellent starting point for bicycle day trips in the countryside. To visit the nearby fortified towns of Naarden (fortress museum) and Muiden (medieval Muiderslot-castle).
Bike rental at the station, like in most towns in Holland.
