I have visited Edirne several times but this was my first and not last visit to the Museum of Health (Sultan Bayezid II Mosque complex). It is several km from the city center, on the banks of Tunja river and for centuries it was one of the best state hospitals in the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Bayezid Ii ordered in 1484 to build a complex consisting of a mosque, medical school, bath, and hospital.
The astonishing fact is that in the darussifa (‘house of health) mental patients were cured by music (harmony and rhythm) and calming murmur of water at the time when in other countries mental patients were being burned at the stake considering that they are possessed by devils…
The complex earned ‘Europe’s best Museum’ award in 2004. It is interesting and educational also for children as it is a wax museum too. I had only 3 hours for visiting the museum and time was not enough. I intend to visit the complex again and stay for half a day there.

It did not sound attractive when I read about it in the web before the visit. Surprisingly, we love our trip to Health Museum. It was very informative and covers an important aspect of life during the Ottoman Empire - Health

The presentation of the information was very interesting. Even my children 12, 9, 4 and 2 were not bored. They found the place very interesting. They were also very occupied discovering new information on the history of medical because they were lots of graphic images.

It is a must when you visit Edirne!! Love it!!

This award winning attraction shows with authentic displays and documentation the sophistication and progress of the health treatments I during the reign of ottoman sultan Beyazid 11.
Leave plenty of time to see all the displays and to read all the information which traces the history of medical science at this time.
