“A wonderful pub”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

My husband and I were recently on a walking tour of Dorset, England and stayed in Childe Okeford 2 nights. Unfortunately the Inn was full and we slept someplace else. We did have dinner 2 nights at The Saxon Inn. The food was great. Lemon Sole, a very fresh salad and of course ale. The best part of this pub is Helen. Helen and her husband Peter own the Saxon. Helen is not only a great host, making you feel included, but also is very knowledgeable about the town and its surroundings. I hated to say goodbye.

We arrived very early for a wedding taking place near by before noon and Peter and his wife really helped us out by prepping our room many hours before the start of our booking so that we could change and use the room. They did the same for other guests which was great. We had a lovely day at the wedding with a welcomed break for a few hours back at the inn which was very relaxing. After a late return and very comfortable sleep, we had a delicious breakfast. The upcoming beer fest sounds great...wish we could be there! We'd definitely stay again...perfect base from which to explore the area.

Very good home cooked Sunday roast, With vegetables served in side dishes, I notice someone else talks of the dish of fryed onions but they were really nice, very good sizes portions. Our party was of 4 and all really enjoyed, each also having a desert again home made "Well ok not the Dorset ice Cream"
This was our first visit to the Saxon Inn (Booked by a local via a recommendation) whilst visiting Shillingstone .. I am sure we will return..Excellent.

A wonderful little "des res" "Half hidden from the eye" (Wordsworth") We drove past it once but on returning soon found it. The welcome was very friendly and the staff were always pleasant and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The room we had number 2 was tastefully furnished, with ample drawer space and wardrobe space. The bed was extremely comfortable. There was a good choice on the menu both for snacks and a main meal and also a specials board. Everything we had was tasty and well cooked. The garden at the back had a covered area where you could sit and there was also a well kept lawned area with seats very pleasant! Many thanks to Peter and Helen for looking after us during my emergency. We would definitely like to stay again.

Very friendly staff and excellent service are the reason why I have given the above rating as the food could have been better. Although home cooked the vegetables were a little odd, a dish of fried onions was presented as an accompaniment to beef and fish dishes and the size of the portion of chips was rather on the mean side. Desserts were good.

We will return as we like the village and we will chose something from the normal menu next time rather than the specials board as I wonder if we were just rather unlucky with our choices.

Came across this inn/hotel by chance and would have no hesitation in staying again. Lovely country pub where you can get a good pint of real beer to enjoy alongside excellent food.
This is how a country pub should be with no loud "background" music and excellent hosts.
Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable and the full English breakfast had the best ingredients and was cooked fresh.
You won't go wrong staying here.
