“Good location and value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

Let me get the negatives out of the way first. This hotel is in a very old building where everything creaks and groans with age. There's definitely room to smarten things up but the main issue is noise. Coming back at 2am my every step was loud and despite tiptoeing I felt I woke the entire place up. The thunderous flushing noise of the shared toilet didn't help either. Add in the very vocal Brighton seagulls and you have a hotel light sleepers should avoid.

With that out of the way let me say that this hotel was fantastic value for money and had very friendly and polite service. The continental breakfast was of higher quality than most chain hotels, the shared bathrooms facilities were clean and the location of the hotel was excellent.

I would probably stay here again should I be needing budget accommodation in Brighton. It's a little worn around the edges but the Iron Duke does the essentials very well.

Stumbled upon the Iron Duke on Sunday after a weekend in Brighton and had one of those rare food heaven moments, hadn't really planned on eating was only really popping in for a pint on our way back home but as soon set foot in the door I was treated to the smell of good roast, so decided to go for the pork and my friend had the lamb and both were amazing, the pork was juicy and tender and the stuffing was heavenly. My friend said the lamb was great as were the vegetables and yorkies, but the gravy was the real winner beacause it was real gravy!! Also the beer was well kept and the barman very helpful and chatty, all in all a very good roast I will definitely eat here again on our next visit.

Firstly, the previous review is erroneous! I too stayed in a room with an oblique sea-view but rest assured there is no large well-known hotel chain building overlooking the Iron Duke - there is only the historic and beautiful St Andrew's Church and beyond that the art-deco Embassy Court building!

Fed up with the likes of cheap national chains I opted for this hotel and bar experience and what a pleasant surprise it was. A regency building but Room 3 had an en-suite double shower, flat screen television and a large comfortable double bed, as well as another single one. The room was clean and well-presented. Interestingly, downstairs there is a display showing the history of the building.

Check-in was a simple and efficient experience under the guidance of Kate. The bar is a traditional 'pub' with the usual selection of spirits and trendy 'alco-pops', as well as a selection of real ales - just 'up my street', as it were. Teas and coffees are also available. Bar staff, the two 'men in black' (James and Jake, I think), are friendly and helpful, as are the local regulars. Peter, the landlord, is a charming and friendly chappie. Food is available and follows a traditional 'English' theme - meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians all catered for - alas, I did not have time to actually eat there.

Brighton is a 'parking nightmare' as a result of the Green Party's policies. However, the Iron Duke is within walking distance of the city centre along Western Road or the sea front.

Next time I am on a business visit, I shall stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 3 - large en-suite with oblique sea view

We stayed here to use as a base for a family wedding in Brighton. We had looked at the reviews on tripadvisor and seen photos. Mixed reviews but then we thought - you can't please everyone. Booking this hotel was a big mistake and was a huge spoiler for what was otherwise a great family celebration.

We had travelled down from Aberdeen, and due to flight times arrived well before the alloted check in time. We phoned and the lovely barmaid on duty was kind enough to let us leave our bags as the rooms were still not ready. However on our return later in the afternoon the first thing we noticed was the old, deformed mattress on our bed. There was a huge dent in the middle and the mattress was also too long for the bed frame, so our feet were elevated! Adding to the discomfort was the creaking. Once in bed unless you laid perfectly still the creaks stopped anyone from sleeping! Other furniture in the room, and indeed throughout the hotel, was also broken. Not even the floor was flat in our room! (Room 4)

We were staying in a room with an "oblique sea view", but it was also overlooked by a large well-known chain hotel. The bathroom window had no privacy glass and a see-through voil (we looked from outside too!) so anyone in the hotel opposite could see us on the toilet or in the shower. We had to rectify this by hanging a blanket over the window.

The toilets also had the loudest flush and groaning pipes! We could hear numerous toilets flushing all night!

On arrival and check in we decided to freshen up, shower (after covering the window!) and head out into the town. Unfortunately the double room booked for 2 occupants only provided 1 towel. I went to the bar to ask for another towel and some shampoo (as only body wash was provided). The barman, whilst very polite and efficient, was very quickly outside our door with more body wash and bath mats!

Continental breakfast is disappointing. Cornflakes, bread, croissants, yoghurts and tea/coffee. Even a choice of cereal would have been a nice touch. It was a buffet so it was possible to fill up, but the cuttlery had not been cleaned very well and we had to rummage for a clean knife one morning.

Fire doors had been wedged open with fire extinguishers, and another of our family's rooms had all the windows siliconed shut as well as a broken fire-door lever. How many fire hazards does one need in a hotel?

The photos on the website through which we booked this hotel are very misleading. We paid £178 for two nights and left feeling very out-of-pocket, not to mention extremely tired after a very uncomfortable weekend and a long journey back to Aberdeen to look forward to.

Room Tip: Don't chose a room in this hotel - stay elsewhere!

Thank you for your feedback and please accept my apologies as we clearly did not meet your expectations.

I have checked the mattress and have ordered a new one as the one that came with the bed is no longer fit for purpose. I have also tightened the screws on the bed frame. Had we known at the time I would have sorted that straight away. For some reason the booking came through as single occupancy which is why there was only one towel but I'm glad the staff on duty sorted that straight away for you.

We passed our last fire safety inspection with flying colours, when the housekeepers clean the rooms all doors are propped open along with windows to air the rooms, the only ones left open have Fire safety approved Dorguards which automatically close the doors on the fire alarm sounding. All rooms have smoke detectors and alarms with self closing fire doors with smoke and heat seals which meet current regulations.

The building itself is 200 years and all rooms have an opening window. Number 4 has a large bay window with an opening sash and the remaining windows in the bay are non opening but not sealed with silicone.

I have ordered some frosting for the shower room window to replace the net curtain although there isnt a hotel near us just a church opposite and a block of flats some distance away along the seafront.

Once again please accept my apologies as it is important to us that our guests enjoy their stay. We do from time to time get things wrong but we do encourage both negative and positive feedback in order for us to be able to improve our service.

All the best.

Peter

Good location as right by the sea front and only a 15min walk into centre of town, walking up the other end to western road there's plenty of buses also - the info regarding buses inside the room booklet was very useful for someone who rarely visits the city!
Staff were very friendly and welcoming, the room was clean and tidy, only slight complaint would be the window which was rather old 'slide' type single glazed which rattled from the wind (it was extremely windy this weekend to be fair!) however it also let in a bit of a gust when closed and can imagine this wouldn't be too pleasant during winter etc - could also easily hear people walking about in nearby rooms as if they were in my room itself, would imagine this is just because it's a very old building so can't be helped I presume.
Shared toilet/shower facilities were up to a good standard and very clean; also glad I was able to leave my luggage free of charge after checking out as it gave me an extra day to enjoy the city!

Didn't eat or drink in the bar so can't comment on that, but looked welcoming :)

Hi Mike,

thank you for your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. Over time the Victorian sash windows can loosen slightly and rattle in high winds. This isn't helpful when you're trying to sleep and we've now had that one fixed. We look forward to welcoming you back next time you visit Brighton.

All the best.

Short walk from the sea and central Brighton - friendly helpful staff.

Lovely, nicely furnished room with a sea view and en suite bathroom for a lot less than other accommodation in the area.

Great value - happy to recommend - way better value than most I have tried in Brighton

The room was adequate for a short (one night) stay - bed comfortable, lighting pretty poor in the room and it was very hot during the night. I did not have an en suite room and the toilet just down the corridor could have been cleaner and the door did not lock properly. Facilities generally not that great. Breakfast in the morning was nothing to write home about but the staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: Be wary of rooms with shared toilet and shower rooms
