On arrival we met the lady we booked through (helena) who was very helpful and showed us where everything was.To be fair though, all staff were helpful and polite throughout.

When we saw our room (27) we couldn't stop smiling, it was just what we wanted and more (be sure to expect more peopleto be booking that room as many of our friends have asked after seeing our facebook pics) the decor throught completed the style of the building.

My other half is a gym freak and headed there first - it says gym on your web page but it was very basic and he was very disappointed by it. (as when looking for a hotel/spa break this was one of his requirements we had to fill) there is the very minimum and such a small area you couldn't do a training routine especially if someone else was in there. by pushing the gym bench to one side you could just about do a burpie without hitting equipment. (however each to there own)

Food - we booked breaky and dinner. dinner - the extra supplement food (scallops and steak) were really good. from the set menu we enjoyed the rump lamb. starter - red pepper soup...mmm ok. belly pork lovely but as with all posh food never seems enough but tasted lovely.

breaky - def have salmon and scrambled egg, but again salmon not alot and very thin slices, OH has had it before at same standard at a different restaurant and said he got more there... i had granola on last day - dont bother - basically a cereal bowl filled with i want to say golden syrup oats as tased like a flap jack, dried fruit and dried apple slices? with a spoonfull of greek yogurt on top and tiny pot at the side. weve had it at jamie olivers restaurant before a flight and the taste and definatley presentation was much better for probably half the price.

spa - the actual spa is lovely has a jacuzzi outside, steam, sauna, two tropical showers id say trying to be a bit like baths, roman baths. we only booked on the monday, forget/ didnt get time to prebook a treatment thought, no do it once there (dont) apparntly you need to book 2 weeks in advance. OH had deep tissue (wanted bamboo) but they could only give us a 25minute treatment each (bit gutted as one of the reasons for booking here ) but our fault for booking late but all down to babysitters for us. I had a lime and ginger scrub - was gutted as came away annoyed and feeling sick. basically got taken to the room that is next to the sauna/steam room area, quite most of the time but got asked to undress and lie on the bed (the bed was like a water bed in a bath tub) because you have to roll over to do your back and front and get up to have a shower near the end and get back on for a moisture it felt like the bed should have been in the gym as it was a workout to get in and off the thing. no step to help you get onto it and nothing to help get you out off it...so by the time id done all that i didnt feel relaxed and felt quiet a bit of motion sickness. the poor girl doing the treatment must of thought i was a right miserable cow as felt washed out....

We rounded our rainy day off with afternoon tea (please, please clarify with waitress what you want as we asked for afternoon tea for two - thinking its a sharer for two) for it and it was massive and had to take some of it too the room as far too much (and i love sweet food) but when we went to sign for it half way through eating it we had been charged £38 as they had given us two sets of afternoon tea. couldnt say anything as we had already started eating it....

As you can see from above there are positives and negatives but overall a lovely and beautiful setting for this hotel and the room was amazing and clean.

We had been to careys manor in the new forest and i suppose compared alot.

Hope this helps someone who wants to book here.

Room Tip: 27 go all out definately there were others at the same price it just depends what floats your boat

The charming Charlton House Hotel oozed history from the time we pulled up the drive.. we had pre booked a long weekend stay in one of the stunning superior rooms, Orchard View, with its own balcony, roll top bath and amazingly carved four poster.. We were fortunate to be blessed with super weather so took advantage of the well kept grounds, immediately embracing the laid back atmosphere.. the staff were all lovely (Beni, Ash and Lauren looked after us well divulging in some interesting conversations) and nothing was too much trouble.. The kitchen staff excelled with their presentation creating sensory feasts at both dinner and breakfast (I would highly recommend the hot breakfast option with a chilli wake up to start the day, truly delicious!!). Yes I read some reviews picking holes in the decor and furniture, but hey, if you're staying in a house over four hundred years old, isn't it quite apt to be reminded we don't live in a perfect world and sometimes the very things that people groan about are what actually gives a hotel like The Charlton House its ongoing appeal and character (to those who see beyond their noses).. A very recommended part of the world to visit with the most exquisite countryside..

We booked a spa package as a birthday present and we were not disappointed. The hotel, spa and grounds are beautiful, with a very peaceful ambience.
The Moroccan themed spa was luxurious with a hydrotherapy pool, outdoor hot tub, Laconium, steam room, sauna and Ice fountain.
The customer service, in all areas, lunch, dinner and breakfast were excellent.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for a relaxing break. It gets a very definite 5 stars from me!

We stayed here for 2 nights after our wedding. We booked it via a package website so weren't 100% sure what to expect after having mixed results in the past, but we were completely amazed. The room was gorgeous, as stunningly decorated as the rest of the hotel. We had dinner as part of the package and were surprised at how good it was; beautifully presented but still delicious and filling. Breakfast was just as good with an excellent selection. The spa was luxurious as were the treatments we had. With good service as well we couldn't have asked for anything more and were very sorry to leave!

Having read some of the not so favourable reviews on Trip Advisor, we were a bit worried about our stay, well let me say we had a wonderfully relaxing stay here.

On arrival we were greeted with charming reception staff who swiftly checked us in and showed us around, there is a lovely relaxed vibe about the hotel and nothing was too much trouble. We had room 5 which was close to reception, it was ideal for donning robes and walking downstairs to the spa, and had lots of character and was very in keeping with the hotel.

The spa was really lovely, and whilst it's not the largest pool area, we simply loved the sauna's steam room and ice machine, and the way it was all set up in a circular shape with dimmed lights. Despite being quite busy on a saturday the sauna and steam rooms were never full. We found it got a bit quieter after five, so worth bearing in mind, and we got up sunday morning before breakfast and pretty much had the spa facilities to ourselves.

Wonderfully tasty dinner, excellent bar staff and restaurant staff, swift service with drinks, and bar nuts which were lovely. Our bottle of champers which was included in our package was chilled ready for us before dinner. The meal was delicious, the pork belly in particular and the 'strawberry soup' my husband raved about! You have a great chef!

Lovely lounge to chill out in before and after dinner, and overall a lovely ambience throughout in the evening.

Spa treatments were lovely and of good quality. No hard selling on the products although staff available to hand if you had any questions.

This hotel was immaculate, the bedroom was spotless, as was the spa.

Only criticisms is the bed was a bit bouncy - I personally prefer a firm bed

In addition, the room was a bit noisy. We were close to reception and whilst there was no wedding that night, due to the proximity to reception and also the fact that the hotel is a more intimite size you could hear guests in the lobby and going in and out the back door (which banged, perhaps this could be addressed) onto the terrace to smoke. This is inevitable and understandable but should be something that you should bear in mind when booking if you are a light sleeper. We probably would still opt for the same room if we returned as it has such a lovely view of the gardens and was convenient when popping to the spa.

Breakfast was of very good quality, organic/locally sourced products, and all very nicely presented, and a great range of fruit, and yogurts and cereals. Cooked breakfast was delicious and the additional maple pancakes I requested were lovely

Overall very impressed and shall definitely return here…it's quirky, cosy, and romantic and very british. I keep leaving the Christmas brochure on the side as a hint to my husband, I'm sure that would be a lovely atmosphere!

Oh and remember to take Trip Advisor with a pinch of salt, there was a guest book in reception packed with wonderful comments

We also combined a visit to Stourhead prior to our arrival at the hotel, I'd recommend it, it was a great combination to a romantic weekend!

We were torn by this hotel - so much potential, and the communal areas are nice, however the style is a mixture of shabby chic/antique however trying to be upper class. It was definitely shabby, but not chic. The setting and the grounds were lovely but let down by the room.

In addition, we had dinner on the Saturday night, service was slow and lacked personality. I had to send back my starter as it was cold. The menu also lacked imagination.

I really don't like giving a poor review, however it just wasn't worth the money, and we even had a last minute deal.
