“Luxurious and very relaxing”
Reviewed 12 January 2011

After a very busy Christmas working throughout the whole month this holiday for us must mean one thing and that is relaxation. Charlton House is perfect to unwind, feel like a VIP and enjoy all the comforts. The staff were fantastic they were professional, polite but also had a personality. The spa is perfect to just sit and relax, read a book, enjoy all the facilities. We went on the romantic break for two and it is well worth the money. The food was amazing and the ambience perfect, also a great place to people watch and just do nothing. Can't wait to go back.

My wife and I stayed at Bannetyne's Charlton House Hotel for 3 nights in early January 2011. We found it on the Mr & Mrs Smith website and chose it because of it's recent reviews, it's relative proximity to home, and Mr Bannetyne's reputation for running successful businesses. We were not disappointed.

On arrival the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful - rarely have I experienced such pleasant service. The rooms were immaculate and well presented with all expected amenities (we stayed in 'Duncan's Den' and then a 'Superior Four-Poster'). The spa was small but had a great, relaxed feel and the Elemis treatments were fantastic (my wife and I had a selection of treatments).

The restaurant was excellent with a very good menu for all meals. The lounges and bar were the perfect place to relax with a drink, newspaper or book. The hotel setting was also fantastic, either for local walks (ladies will obviously love the Mulberry Outlet nearby) or for exploring Somerset and the local area.

Overall Bannetyne's Charlton House Hotel is a superb spot to relax and recuperate and we would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone.

We visited Charlton House Hotel in early January 2011 as a late Christmas present to ourselves. Were very glad that we did. From the moment we arrived and throughout our stay we were made to feel very welcome and that nothing was too much trouble.

Our room was lovely and had a very comfortable four-poster bed. The rest of the hotel was very comfortable and cosy and felt like a large country house. The bar and restaurant had a lovely ambiance and the staff were great. We ate in the restaurant both nights of our stay and the food was top notch and very reasonably priced.

We really enjoyed the spa facilities especially the hot tub and hydrotherapy pool. The hotel was relatively quiet when we visited so most of the time we had the whole spa to ourselves, Heaven!!!. We will definitely be making a return visit very soon and we'll be recommending a stay to all our friends.

My wife and I spent two nights at this wonderful country home just before Christmas. The room was fabulous and the facilities first class. We found the staff to be courteous and attentive. The spa was very uplifting. A perfect retreat for quiet and peaceful contemplation.

My partner and I stayed at Charlton House for three nights following New Year. We nearly decided against booking after seeing the horrible website, because it is so cheesy compared to other boutique hotel websites thanks to its nasty flashing touts advertising different deals. But we saw from reviews on Trip Advisor and Mr and Mrs Smith that people had positive reports, so we took the plunge. The package we took cost £690 for three nights including dinner and afternoon tea. Annoyingly we were not able to book the package direct through the hotel but had to phone a separate head office number where the member of staff didn't seem particularly familiar with the hotel. But we considered the deal value for money.

First the good things: the decor is really splendid and the spa is lovely. There's no full-size pool but the plunge pool has an indoor and outdoor area and there's an outdoor hot tub. Plus a steam room, sauna, laconium and ice fountain. The free wi-fi internet worked well. We paid extra for a superior room that featured a roll-top bath and a patio. Later on we took a look at another room and were glad we had paid extra as the bathroom was much bigger and better-decorated in the room we took. The staff were all extremely friendly, though a few of them seemed inexperienced and certainly the team did not seem to be as slick as I would expect of a boutique hotel. When anything went wrong the team went out of their way to make things right for us, which is exactly the level of service we would expect. The room service was quick and friendly.

Now the bad things: the music in the main bar / restaurant area was a dire loop of about 20 chart hits played at quite high volume. This discouraged us from spending too much time in the bar or restaurant. We got sick of hearing the same five or six songs again and again. The music in the spa is not much better - a depressing new age piano threnody with some bird song over the top. It wouldn't take much for this hotel to fill an iPod or laptop full of chillout, classical or jazz music and solve the music issue instantly. Another problem area for us was the cheap bathrobes that they provide - instead of being cotton as you would normally expect, they are some kind of naff fleece. The equally cheap-looking staff uniforms and tatty name badges are more reminiscent of a municipal leisure centre than of a luxury hotel.

Finally the mediocre things: the first two nights of our stay the heating in our room and several of the lights were broken, though the hotel did supply us with a free-standing heater which was satisfactory. The spa treatment we had was acceptable though not outstanding, as was the meal. Although many places advertise the restaurant as a Michelin starred restaurant five years running, we suspect the old regime and chef is no longer running as it was not a Michelin-quality meal. The dinner we had was perfectly adequate and we enjoyed it, though it was not something to write home about. The bar staff told us they were not strictly permitted to make basic cocktails as they hadn't been trained, though we encouraged them to give it a go anyway and they did an adequate job. (I blame management, not bar staff, for failing to train staff in a few basic cocktails!)

All in all we thought this was a friendly, welcoming place with a very warm and willing team of staff. We didn't feel it was quite up to the level of luxury boutique hotels we normally discover through Mr and Mrs Smith, but then it was good value - you get what you pay for. If they could sort out the bathrobes, the music and the uniforms and if they raised the food/cocktails game we'd recommend it to people.

We combined a short relaxtion break, with a visit to relatives nearby. The key element for us was that we were travelling with a five week old baby.

The hotel delivered on every level. The staff are fantastic - very understanding, and supportive to our needs. Facilities and rooms very good. A few previous reviewers have described the hotel style as shabby & chic, commenting it is more shabby than chic, this isn't correct.

The spa is very good, well equipped with sauna, steam, ice fountain, etc. Very impressed with outdoor hot tub and hydrotherapy pool. A great place to relax. Little surprised to not be offered a robe and towel after spa treatment so I could go through to pool area and relax, the assumption is that you go down from your room in your robe, etc.

The food was faultless, and good value for money. The restaurant food was exceptional. The bar let itself down by having no premium strength lagers, on draught, or even bottled by our second day. This appeared to be a simple one off error with the ordering, It gave me the opportunity to get into some of the regional "Bath Ales" - but I am a little surprised that nobody thought of a quick trip to a local off licence as short term remedy/disguise.

Overall a great hotel good for couples and families. More child friendly than Babbington House!!

Really enjoyed our stay, would highly recommend to all.

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at Charlton House. The room was absolutely stunning with a huge bathroom (amazing bath and shower)!

The spa was good, I wouldnt say it was fantastic as a tad dated now, but we had a lovely time. Food in the bar and restaurant great.

We would go back!
